Well, I've been playing Baten Kaitos Origins for the past few days. My impression:

COMBAT: This got to me first. For those of you who played the original Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, recall the battle system. You could use basically any Magnus you wanted to, right? Of course, using certain combos made things work a little better, but you didn't really have any limitations.

Well, it changed.

Here in the Land of BKO, there's a certain way to do things. It took me a while to actually pick up on this new system...several HOURS to be exact. And I was pissed. Only one healing Magnus per turn? No...that's cruel. Especially when on the verge of death, having only beans in your reach and a mid-potion just out of grasp.

Also, you can no longer block during the enemy's turn. This has gotten me killed.

DECKS: I remember setting up decks made special for each character. BKO has one deck to be shared between three characters. Of course, it contains attack cards that can be used by all characters, but trying to stick in Weapons (now POWER UPS. Flame Swords aren't actual ATTACK CARDS ANYMORE) and Armors (Now used for a defense boost...which is canceled out by using a Weapons card. WTF?) that are character-specific, and trying to fit in enough of them to actually keep yourself going isn't fun.

Those two things pretty much broke down what WOULD have been a good impression. Storyline is great, and the graphics are a pretty bonus, but the combat is just screwy.

Though I did spend a while smiling in the beginning of the game when I found maps of Diadem, Sadal Suud, and Anuenue (you'd understand if you've played the first Baten Kaitos). And a few other things.

Mehh...so, it wrecked itself through the battle system mostly, and the decks. It's weird. It's also harder to get money. The most I've ever had is just over 2K, and that's having spent over an hour leveling. Sad life on the streets of Mintaka and Haselleh.
