Do some research on the topic.
Even if you think you know everything on the topic, there may in fact be things that you don't know.
I can be one of those people at times, but I always have a tab open just for research.
Also, if you are playing a canon character [one from the series, created by the creator], do some research on them.
Watch episodes they appear int, read manga chapters they appear in, etc.
I find it very helpful when I'm roleplaying as Renji and Aizen from Bleach [though I must say, Renji's kinda easy, though that may be only because he's my favorite character ;P]
And, if at all possible, find a song sung by that character's seiyu.
For songs from Bleach or Naruto, just send me a PM and I'll reply with a link to a song by your character if I can find one :3
