What a miserable day it had been.
Besides the fact that it was raining, Audrey had to walk home from school. No umbrella, no money for a bus, and her only friend had stayed home sick that day, so no bumming a ride. But there was more.
It was Valentine’s Day.
She thought that it would be a wonderful day. She had a great boyfriend. They’d been together for two years now, and he had promised to get her something special. She had bee looking forward to it since she had woken up that morning.
Lies. She wiped tears from her eyes as she walked. A strong wind blew her wet hair into her face, blocking her view and causing her to trip over a crack in the sidewalk. She fell right into a huge mud puddle, which had somehow migrated from the side of the path and plopped itself down in front of her. She pushed herself up and out of the muck which had gotten all over her shirt, hair and most of her face. Attempting to wipe it away only made it worse because of the mud that had gotten on her hands when she pushed herself out of the puddle.
Crying more, she continued home.
Finally reaching her destination, she unlocked the back door and went inside. Dumping her damp, muddy sneakers next to the door, she made her way to her room and locked the door. Looking at her dresser, she saw several small glass animals that her boyfriend had bought for her at the farmers market.
CRASH.
She shattered them on the dresser top, causing her hand to bleed from the small glass shards that became embedded in it. She didn’t care.
The b*****d said he hated me after I caught him making out with that Janet what’s-her-face whore…
More shaking sobs.
She had caught him cheating in her. After two years of “I love you” and “I’ll never let you go.”
“YOU LIAR!!!” she screamed. “Liar liar liar!!” she pounded on the shattered remains of a blue glass dolphin, staining it violet with her blood. She shredded pictures of him, anything she could find. Ripped apart stuffed animals limb by limb.
Anything he had given her.
After her destructive outburst, she slumped against the wall and sobbed uncontrollably, tears streaking the mud down her face.
When she was finally finished, she tossed a glance at the glass all over the dresser. She picked up a flat, sharp piece and, without thinking, plunged it into her wrist as deep as it would go.
