Development Update 5/5 Bugs We're Tracking - we could use more information on the CDN issue in the Philippines. If anyone is running Windows XP and has problems seeing their avatar in that area of the globe, could you please send me a PM? - signature limits are being looked at - if we were to do some quick fixes to inventory/avatar customization, what would you want fixed? Find Friends Okay, Find Friends went out, to a hail of threads in Site Feedback. Based on user feedback, we added the icons back in, and the Select All/Select None options, oversights both -- they should have been in the original push. We heard you on the Friends vs. Enemies, and are trying to figure out the right term (Friends & Ignored? Friends & Unfriends?) we'll push out a fix for that, I think. Image Hiding This is in QA now -- looks like it will go out Thursday. Basically, you'll have a new setting in your account options: This allows you to control when you see images. If you have any images blocked, you'll see an option to show the images: ... on a per post and per page basis. Note that this does not affect signatures, since there is already a separate control for that. Bag of Win Sagger wrote an interesting article about the Bag of Win, which is recommended reading for anyone interested in the economics of the thing. Prom Prom will be pretty cool, it seems like -- the devs on it have come up with something really cool. It is important to note that prom is not the summer event, by the way; think of it as a bonus event. The summer event, on the other hand, will be amazing, I think; if it's anything like it was described to me, then it will be breathtaking in its scope. What's bugging you? What questions do you have? 	Being able to reorganize game items in the inventory organizer would be nice. Also, the prom dresses tend to disappear whenever I try to put on any leg, ankle, or feet items. If it's possible, could you please tell the right devs to fix it? Thank you.

	Faster loading on the inventory would be awesome. I have a fairly small inventory and a high-speed connection. I can't imagine how awful it must be for people with large inventories! If it's within the scope, I'd like to define my own layering on a per-outfit basis, please. smile I'd also like to have Grombie eyes on a separate layer, like human eyes, please. smile

	I doubt that this is a "quick" fix, but I'd really love if we had more room for our inventories. I believe the current cap is 800 items? Well, I'm beginning to feel the pressure at 500. x D

	Hm.. around Convention time (around may) last year, they released a whole bunch of new things into the Gaia Store. surprised Do you think you could check and see if they have anything new waiting to be added? :/ I feel like aside from all of the discount promotion things for the Gaia Store that its being neglected compared to its past glory. biggrin But thats all, nothing too major. (P.S. o3o will you be at the fanime? lol.)

	Work It Harder Make It Better Do It Faster, Makes Us stronger... More inventory room would be great, and a easier way to organize friends; Instead of moving friends up one by one, how about a drag and drop sorta thing. 	As far as minor tweaks to the inventory system, I can't think of anything. What I want is a complete overhaul with different storage boxes. domokun Somewhere to keep my letters, somewhere to keep my EIs, somewhere to keep my hoards.. it's tough sending those items out to different accounts just to preserve my sanity. I keep going over the "your equip screen is just a blank page" item limit, and that's annoying. Increase it please~? XD I'm getting more and more unique items and soon I won't be able to play dress-up even if all my doubles are in storage. I'm looking forward to the prom~! It's gonna be FIERCE!

	but i like the term enemies being used. xd i'd actually be extremely amused if you changed it to allies and enemies. as for inventory...i'd like to be able to organize game items. unlike some people, i collect game items and the fact that they're disorganized and the only way to fix it is to trade all of them to a mule and back is a bit annoying. xp

	Lately I've noticed that my inventory stretches while the images are loading and returns to normal once everything's loaded. I'd like to see this issue fixed and the ability to organize game items added. As for the "Friends and Enemies" thing, I personally think "Friends and Rivals" sounds a lot better IMHO. Edit: Something that's bugging me - I know this sounds more like a shop update issue and is slightly off-topic, but I'd like to be able to sell multiple items back to the shops instead of just one item at a time. Edit #2: Something else that's been bugging me: It'd be nice to be able to remove topics from our Subscribed Topics list that have become blocked. I've got one on my list that I'd really like to be able to get rid of someday. Also, I noticed on a mule account of mine a long time ago that if you don't have anything in your inventory and you go to a shop, the box that contains your inventory doesn't load. Is there a way to tweak this so that it loads even when you're empty-handed?

	Just for a quick "It's bugging me" thing, I would really love to see all of my journal subscriptions. \|D I was going through and unsubscribe to some and noticed that I still had 40 on the page.. <_<;; I have no idea how many I'm actually subscribed to. xd ; For the friend thing, what about annoyances? I believe that's the main reason why most of us user our ignore list. ^^; Also, journal links don't work in journals but I have read the article from Sagger. :3 I thought it was well written. I can't wait for prom. \|D Some of us went extreme old school and created dance cards. rofl

	What do I want fixed with the inventory? I'm not sure if this IS a quick fix... actually I'm sure its not but I'll comment about it anyways because this needs to be fixed ASAP. Us with large inventorys are screwed. Eventually your customize me screen breaks because there is some cap of items allowed. The only way around this is to keep a lot of your inventory in storage with is not that great. I want to see my full inventory while I change my avatar! If that cap could even be increased for now until you can get rid of the cap.... that would be amazing. Only seeing the first 800 items at the bank kinda sucks too. & yeah. Those would be my inventory issues / woes

	What would be nice: organizing game items and better loading for the customization page. I get tired of getting a white screen. Oh, and when arranging the item list by name, type, or retail value, it would be nice to be able to quickly save the items in that order. On a side note, when putting an item up for sale in the marketplace, it would be nice if, like in stores, we could scroll to the end of the inventory from the first page. Most of the items I sell end up at the end of my inventory (because, like many people, I mostly buy stuff just to resell it), and browsing through more than ten pages is slow and inefficient.

	-better loading of images in the inventory, sometimes it takes forever on my dialup and causes my avi not to appear in the customizing section. -A button to unequipped the last item you put on. or just an undo button like photoshop >.< (with lots of undo's) -maybe a backing colour for equipped items so I know which items I already have on. -when you click the item to equip and the options appear to chose a pose sometimes it appears in random places, so maybe have a fixed location for this. -remove the backing on the avatar customization because I think subconsciously I'm trying to match my avi with it >.< How about I suggest some more razz -Theres a petition out there called gaia outfits which is pretty cool. Basically you create some avis and have the option to save them so if a week from now you want to go to your demonic avi you can easily switch between them without having to re-equip all the items -an option to sort clothing by colour, kinda like what the shop have would come in handy when you want to find something that matches. -how about another tab showing all the items from most equipped to least equipped, so gaian's can find there more favorite items more easily (which is a pain finding when you have 1000+ items or just customized your inventory)

	Jumping on the bandwagon, I'd love to be able to organize game items! Also, although the "You have so many items you can't edit your avatar" thing has never happened to me, it certainly sounds like something that ought to be prioritized directly into the stratosphere.

	I have several questions about the image blocker/hider function: 1) Will there be an option to turn off image hiding entirely? I have my own host and I do not want to be forced into having to get a photobucket account in order to get my own threads to display properly. (if other people want to block my images, that's their problem.) 2) Will the image blocker be able to remember images that the user has unblocked so that they will load if they navigate back to that page? 3) Will there be an option to block images individually, even if they are hosted on a whitelisted site?

	I recently reduced my inventory to under 800 and it can still take over an hour of trying and retrying to get it to actually load so that I can equip stuff. I'd love to see a better interface for multiple-option items. I have to scroll to the moon to see all of the Biancamella poses, for example. While on the subject of those, multiple-option item interfaces no longer vanish when a non-handheld pose is selected. The little x-box to close them (the upper right one, not the red one to unequip) is tiny and sometimes difficult to click; it was much nicer to be able to select an option and have the box automatically vanish. xp I'm looking forward to the image hide/unhide option. I've been sticking to guilds, but it's always a pain to venture into the forums and run into Shock Pics. xp Will users have the option to whitelist (or blacklist) specific domains ourselves, or will Gaia maintain a master whitelist of certain mainstream hosts? confused I'm curious about Gaia Prom. My RL prom was rather lame. Do you know if they're hiring a band for the occasion, a DJ, or just putting in a CD changer set to "random"? xp [edit] In response to the previous poster: If you're running firefox with Adblock, you can specifically block images already. I've used several times to remove aggravating post style images from prolific posters. ninja

	Hello! I read your blog every time you post, and I thank you for keeping in touch with the users. Since you're fairly active, I'm going to bring this to you, as you are a developer, and this is your realm of knowledge. I have beef with my inventory. Well, a lot of beef actually. confused The first is that my equip screen keeps timing out once I have over a certain number of items. This is annoying. Very annoying. I cannot change my avatar unless I move things into storage. Dressing your avatar is KEY to Gaia. It's one of three things that keep me coming back. The whole point of having a gold system is to allow people to buy stuff -- the majority of that stuff being pixels for avatars. Gaia is only going to keep getting bigger and they will only release more and more items. This is a problem that needs to be looked into sooner rather than later, as this is becoming a problem for more and more users. It doesn't help that each evolution or donation item takes up multiple slots in one's inventory depending on how many poses it has. It's no good. sad I have created a feedback thread that goes into more depth and is getting feedback from users: CLICK In relation to this is the painfully slow inventory arranger. Yes, I have a lot of items. But in my opinion, the point of Gaia is collecting items. I feel punished because I have so much stuff. The arranger not only takes 15-20 minutes to load my inventory, but the script run slowly and I get an error message when I load that asks me if I want to abort the script. I always select "no" and let it load in it's own time. I used to just quit arranging my inventory, but now that I can't dress my avatar without moving stuff to storage, I have to use it way more frequently, and that makes me an unhappy camper. It would be VERY appreciated if your team could look into this. Many of us would be ecstatic. xd

	I always enjoy reading this journal. For the inventory fixes, I would definitely love better loading times for both the inventory page and equip page. I reduced my inventory down to about 500 items and the equip page still likes to hang for two or three minutes, after the images have downloaded, before loading the page completely. It really makes going to the bank a bad experience too. It doesn't really annoy me as much as the other issues already said, but could the pop-ups for multiple-pose items be fixed/improved? Now they randomly decide to disappear or stay after clicking a pose, while some items (Hermes' Moon, Biancamella) stretch the page a lot from having a lot of poses.

	Hey Pan! I enjoy reading your journal, and appreciate the time you take fixing things around the site. :3 Recently this started occurring, and it's driving me CRAZY. And no, it's not about inventory caps or organization! I hope you'll be able to fix it. On the My Avatar page, whenever there's a multi-pose item, the window with all the poses would close after you selected which pose you wanted. Recently however it just stays open even after you select a pose, and thus manually exiting the window. It's very annoying, considering my page is already stretched out due to the recent change of how the items are displayed, having to go back and forth and making sure everything is closed is a nuisance. I hope that you'll be able to tweak this, or perhaps give us the option (I have no idea if people like it that way or not). Thanks in advance!

	Inventory, what quick fix do I want? To have 4K items in it and still have it load. >_> Wait, is that even something that can be fixed quick? <_<; Unfriends, now I love that term. XD! I've been one of the many users that have reached the "ceiling" of customization; reached that pinnacle of poses and items and can no longer equip items under normal circumstances. I know that Fleep has been saying that the fix is on the way, but I'd like to see that soon. How's things going in GQ? I've heard that the entire Art Team has been estatic with the Project Runway help they got for this upcoming event. I can't disagree either; the items are very high-class. So, what does a Pana do in his free time? Demotest new OSes? Debug code for websites? Rock Band it out with the Homies?

	"Allies and enemies" would be neat considering the MMO that's coming up. Other than that... I think it was fine as just "friends". Could be labeled "Friend Settings" or something if "friends" isn't obvious enough. And just to join the bandwagon... I'd like an inventory upgrade too. What motivation is there to buy MCs or CS items when we can't fit any more items in our inventory without it breaking? That's how I see it anyway.

	I also agree that selling multiple items at a time back to shopkeepers would be nice instead of all the clickclickclicking causing carpcarpcarpal tunnel. And I use my ignore list for people who are bots, greedy beggars or just plain annoying.

	Thanks for updating your journal; I, too, feel I learn a lot from it. I appreciated the link to Sagger's journal, too. 3nodding Thanks for the heads-up about the avatar issues; I will have those from the Phillippines PM you from now on. For inventory, as you are aware, more and more Gaians are running into the ceiling problem. I have fewer than 300 items, yet Gaia keeps producing more and more awesome things I know I'll need to have, so the inventory size issue is often on my mind. Regarding the images, I think it will be great to have the option to turn them off; this is something some of us suggested back in the 3-server days. I would love it if Tektek could be whitelisted, though. I emailed Tekton about what you mentioned in the announcement, but I haven't heard back from him yet. Thanks for adding the smiley icons back into the Friends page; I would love it if the PM, Trade, and Give a Gift options could revert to the icon also. It adds coherence to the site to use the same icons throughout, and they are fun graphics. And concerning those who are not friends, of the choices suggested so far, I prefer "Annoyances". Sometimes I try out some item combinations and for some reason one item removes another and I have to go back to find the item that was removed to add it back. A list of the currently equipped items so I can easily enable or disable those without having to actually remove them from the avatar. These would be handy while making up a new outfit.

	I've always found it a bit annoying that I can't organize my game items, since I tend to accumulate tons of them at a time. And I also wish that there were some way to sell multiple items at once back to the stores, instead of going through them one at a time. Think either of these could happen in the future? And I'd just like to say, I think the image hiding option is a great idea! I've been waiting patiently for images to be turned back on, but I like that I could switch them back off again if I wanted.

Item and inventory fixes: -The only things really bugging me about customizing right now are the pose windows, and how they a) open in the bottom right corner and make for tedious scrolling b) don't close anymore when you select a pose Ooh, the summer event is sounding delicious..can't wait!

	I'd like to add my name to the list of people who'd like to be able to organize game items. Also, a bit more choice in layering would be wonderful. Mostly though, I'd like it if the inventory arranger weren't so glitchy with larger inventories. I can deal with the "Inventory failed to save" messages (though I wouldn't mind to see them go), but lately if I move things within my held inventory and then move them to the storage locker, I come back and it acts as though I never did the initial arrangement. For example, if I switch a pair of gloves with a pair of shoes in my inventory and then move the shoes to storage, I come back and the shoes are still in my inventory and the gloves are in storage.

	Thanks for the update, Pan. The one thing I personally desire most for the avatar system is a 'favorite outfits' mechanic, so we don't have to spend five minutes making a complicated but often used outfit. Coming in close second would be the return of the original In Da Hood Sweater positions. I want to be able to make this again. At the very least, it would grease my wallet - if you know what I mean. ninja

	my inventory spreads until it loads too. for some reason my inventory will not load on my laptop and remains as urls. I use firefox and windows xp prof. I don't know if it has something with my laptop for it works fine on other computers. I hope that can be fixed.

	I wish users would "choose their battles"... the fact that people are upset about the term "enemies" upsets me. I mean, if you're mean enough to ignore someone's existence, how much of a stretch is it to call that person an enemy??? My enemies are either: 1.) Jerks 2.) Botters 3.) Gore/Porn spammers. I think enemies hit the nail, but I refuse to waste my time making a "Save the enemies feature" thread. I honest don't think people care as much as they say they do, they just want to complain about a topic in a forum that no one else has yet. I bet people will even come to your journal, read my response and give some half-baked retort about how "It's childish and blah,blah,blah" When the fact is, ignoring someone is pretty childish unless you do it to people who are your...enemies? Hmmm... what the hell were the Gaian admins thinking? If you're going through the effort to change it to something else... I don't know... I personally liked it. Maybe instead you can make a thread telling people that ..."This is Gaia, it's a community of users, and although our users can influence our decisions, we aren't going to allow them to change the vision we have in the office when we implement a word like enemy to the ignore list. kthnx." The Definition of "Enemy" for all of the children out there who are opposed to it is: "...a person who feels hatred for, fosters harmful designs against, or engages in antagonistic activities against another; an adversary or opponent. .." So an enemy is someone who is mean to you? So by calling them an enemy, we're just properly labeling them? Forget teaching kids to pick up a dictionary, let's just change it back to ignored. 	This was my take on the "Friends & Enemies" subject in a thread in SF: Think about the words "sparkling", "shining", "twinkling", and "shimmering" - all have roughly the same definition, but any native English speaker can tell the difference in connotation: "shining" connotes a more stable kind of reflection than "shimmering", "twinkling" implies less light or more distance than "sparkling", etc. Would you ever say that a star "sparkles", or that a coin "shimmers"? No, because the connotations implied by each words are specific and distinct. Now look at "ignored" and "enemy": "ignored" is fairly neutral, and doesn't have much meaning to it beyond its definition - it simply means that you aren't paying any attention to the object it describes, and this fits the ignore system of Gaia very well. But "enemy" is an entirely different story: it's arguably one of the most emotionally charged words in the entire English language. It has tons of connotations, all of them negative; war, fear, hatred, disgust, rage, death. Through countless stories we hear through our lifetimes, we are brought up to learn that two who are enemies will eventually clash, and one will destroy the other; and the winner feels little relief, because they have lost so much already in the events that led to their opponent becoming a true enemy in the first place. The enemy is the polar opposite of the self, someone whose very existence pains you, and who you want to eliminate as quickly as possible. "Foe", "adversary", "opponent", "rival", these all have contexts where they can be neutral or even good, such friendly competitions or sports matches, but you'll never hear the word "enemy" used in such a context, because it has no positive, or even neutral meaning. Does this word describe Gaia's ignore system at all? Not even close. I personally think that the name should be changed back to "Ignored", and that the links in the drop-down menu and elsewhere should just read "Friends" - essentially, everything as it was before the change. People on your Ignore list are people you want to, well, ignore, and the constant reminder via the links that they even exist makes the site a little less enjoyable. I can see how the change was probably made in preparation for Battle, but it was just plain bad word choice. Although, having a "Rivals" list (neither of the existing ones, but a new one) once Battle is released could definitely enhance the experience: it could track the different stats of anyone you put on it, for bragging rights between friends. Aside from that whole issue though, I'm very pleased with everything Gaia' been doing lately (if I wasn't, I probably wouldn't be focusing on the enemies issue, small as it is). smile I was definitely excited to see that picture filter when I read this journal, too. Keep up the good work! Also, something I just noticed while trying to submit this comment: if you go to submit a comment after previewing it, the captcha doesn't appear, and it sends you back to the original composition page - a minor inconvenience at worst, but just pointing it out. smile

	Inventory: It'd be nice for it to not take so long to load! Please, split up items in an easier way. So that it doesn't take so long to load. I have a lot of items and loading every single one is kind of redundant if all I want is to select one of them. Perhaps default it so that no item comes up, or that we can search our own items if we want to find a specific one? EDIT! Also, I wouldn't mind the ability to create our own tabs for the inventory. Like "Items" is one tab, but if you wanted you could create a "Animal" Tab. This would allow for easier access in one's inventory. Avatar: Nothin' wrong with it, Although I would love the ability to edit our own layering system.

	I have a question: I have my own legit site that I have a link to and image from in my signature. Obviously, it's been blocked for the past two weeks or so, and my question is this: is there or will there be a process where we can submit sites so they can be added to "trusted" status and thus not be blocked?

	You know, I always read your journals. I'm just a failed lurker, as I don't comment very often, if I ever had before. When it comes to the inventory itself, people have brought up the basics already. Faster loading and the inventory size itself. For the Inventory Arranger, it'd be nice to not have house and car items both in the House tab, and not showing up in the default tab as well. That, and to arrange game items. Though it'd be nice if that could load faster, or if you could sell multiple items, I already have supposed reasons why it's not like that. At least, with the loading time. If it could be made to completely load more quickly, it'd have been done already at this point. As for the other, there's probably some coding trick that hasn't been implemented, or risks breaking the feature itself. That's my guess, at least. A really convenient feature would be to have a few default arrangements that would change it when going back to the main inventory page. Such as choosing to 'sort by type' will have it sorted by that, as well as rearranging so it's now the inventory will load in that order. That, along with other features. Such as Load By Section, so it arranges the items by Hats, Tops, Bottoms, Shoes, Accessories, Items, in that order, to save grievances. I suppose I'm only thinking about that because, over the years, I've accumulated a pretty large inventory. It becomes inevitable with the amount of items Gaia has in general. That, and to keep things stable, I like to arrange them by a very similar system mentioned just before. With so many items, it takes so incredibly long to get wigs and hats up to the top. Well, that's it, really. I can't say simple, as it's a good concept, but is probably a tear jerker to write up and implement.

	Wow I had completely forgotten about the car items. Seriously, it needs it's own tab and indicators that the items are in use. It is uber annoying seeing them pop up in shops under "equipped" seeing as you aren't the one that has them equipped, the car does. Just something that bothers me but I got used to XD

	First off, cool new avatar! Also, it's really great to see the option to turn off images in posts. Inventory improvements: 1. Being able to organize Game Items. 2. Making the Storage box bigger/wider when you open it. When you have a ton of items in there, it's hard if you want to move things around. The box doesn't always easily scroll when you drag an item up/down the list, either. 3. Having multiple storage boxes/tabs (potential goldsink, people could pay to have more boxes). 4. Having a left "back" arrow on the inventory screen when you sell in the Marketplace. 5. Having a Gift Tracker option. We can view our past trades, why not Gifts too? This is an issue when people think they've been hacked or are missing items. Hackers use Gifting as a way to steal items without notice. If we could view our own Gift Log, it would help protect from this, and it would free up Mods from having to do it for users. It's not like it's some big secret thing, anyway... I don't understand why it's hidden in the first place. Customize Me improvements 1. Fixing the pop-up window for multi-pose items, especially items with lots of poses. It would be better if the pop-up was set up to appear in the same area, rather than all over. It's very annoying to have this happen, too: Example pic 2. It doesn't bother me personally, but many people dislike the placement of the 'flaunt it' banner, and said that they accidentally click it and it makes them resave the avatar that they're working on. 3. The pop-up window for multi-pose items just sits there when you equip a pose, and to make the box go away you have to click its X. Didn't it used to go away itself? I would prefer it to go away when you equip a pose. What else bugs me? - You can list, and sell a Zero quantity of a game item on the Marketplace. Yikes. - Daily Chance often locks up on the Games tab, and doesn't grant an item. Half the time, an error pops up and tells me it can't grant the item. The screen goes gray and the error prompts me to "click here to close this window" and when I "click here"... it does nothing, and I have to re-load the page. - Dunno if this is your department but... is it possible to make it so the "Report" buttons are at the top of the screen as well as the bottom of the screen, such as in PMs and in Threads? It isn't fun to see a gore/porn troll and have to scroll through a HUGE block of their disgusting crap to press the report button at the very bottom. gonk

	Seeing as I just got one, kill the ads with audio please. It's real annoying hearing "Congrats! You got some random bullshit." And still, CINEMAS! Movies for me still are not loading. I complained back in March (and even earlier that that I think) in the forums. Also, two journals or so ago I also posted some more details and screenshots for reference. Is this ever going to be fixed? And no, my computer is not a piece of crap so don't even start with me there. On a more positive note, I've got to say, there are some really interesting comments people are making.

	^ I second that. I posted this on your profile, but maybe you'll see it here. Why is it that we can't equip as many items on our avatars as we wish? Is it something to do with the coding? To me, it seems like it would be easier to let everything equip without writing tons of code to tell what one item can and cannot equip with. Will we ever be able to choose the layering of clothes on our avatars? A lot of people would love this.
