Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update 4/28
Bugs I'm Tracking
- still trying to get feedback on the CDN issues that cause avatars not to display outside of the US

Bag of Tired
I'm exhausted from all the "Bag of Win" stuff. It's taken probably half my time for the past couple of days, and to be honest it doesn't seem like my efforts to try and explain are actually helping at all. But thank you for the users that sent intelligent, well-thought letters about the issues; your input was appreciated.

I also will mention here that I am not the official Gaia economist, and that my journal entries reflect my interpretation of events, which is not necessarily the One True Viewpoint of Events(tm).

New Arenas
I had mentioned that we were retooling the new arena UI to make it more approachable. Some shots from the mocks:

User Image
The idea is to make it more readily apparent just how much activity is going on in the arenas at any given time. For example, this is a shot of a user browsing an art entry; note that to the right there are a number of easy ways to browse the latest/most popular entries. The idea behind this is that it facilitates easy discovery and browsing of everything that is available.

User Image
This ease-of-browsing extends to all of the different arenas. Here is the avatar arena, showing a number of avatar entries.

User Image
We made your favorites and friendlists more prominent, with the idea being that once you've discovered some artists that you like, you should be able to discover their additional work.

Stuff Rolling Out This Week
- Find Friends should go out this week
- Item normalization, by our own rocking team of DARKNRGY, Jakobo and omgwhat, hit QA today. When this finally goes live it will enable us to do tons of cool stuff with the gameplay.
- We've been working on the moderator tools; most of you don't see this, but it should mean that the moderators get to stuff faster
- Buildup to a big event goes live today

That is some awesome Saya art. D: >

And thank you for removing the bag so quickly, and trying to explain the reasoning behind it.

This is just my opinion, but the new arena design kind of looks like youtube. I liked how the layout we got to test had actual background images on the main page. It made it a bit less.. cold? Or maybe a bit more welcoming. Not sure how to describe it. >.>;

Does item normalization mean inventories/dressing will finally load if you exceed the current crash limit of 1.2k items? @w@

Edit: Woow, I wasn't looking forward to the Gaia Prom event that much, cause "what could you possibly do to make prom fun on the internet" but after seeing the announcement just now I am definitely looking forward to it! Christian was my favorite designer of project runway this season and seeing him involved kind of made me giddy. XD
And the dresses are prettyyyyyy and affordable... and those dance videos are funny, I can't wait to see more! Andandand I can't wait to see what the flash game is, or the NPC update. Ahh this looks like it's going to be an awesome event, already!

Any news on images in posts/signatures/etc? It's not stopping the inappropriate images, but I suppose it's still there because of the password (images that require authentication to view) problem?

Arena's UI looks very clean.

Bag of Tired lol. I agree it's time to just let it go.

So this prom crashers thing... is this the summer event? It's kinda meh sounding and looking.

New stuff isn't really real news though. Just OK, it's finally arriving.

Finally I can make a short comment again smile

And i'm waitingt to see what Item normalization can do, sounds great whee

Thanks for the update!

-How long until we see Gaia make use of item normalization? Is ANY equipment ever going to get variables added to it that affect gameplay during battle? Any proposed new items that evolve differently, like after the user logs on like 100 times? etc.?

-Keep us posted, like I know you will~

The arena is looking SO fantastic. I can't wait, you guys are doing a wonderful job!

Sorry about all the flak for the Bag of Win. I hope this doesn't discourage the team from trying new things. Things like this happen, the best we can do is try to learn from it. heart Thanks for all the updates and 'splainin.

The Prom update! New items! Item normalization! Awesome times at Gaia High. You guys are working so hard! Props! Mad props.

Nothing will ever top dancin' batman and robin. :O HE WAS NUMBER ONE. *Echos*

The arena looks rad! Good job you guys. xDD
I has a question though next entry could we possibly get an update on how you guys are doing with the image situation?
I saw the thread in the Q&A and that it was taking longer than originally expected, but it was kinda vague as to whats going on. Tis more curiosity than any thing.

-isn't even going to touch the bag of win-
-pats-
If it helps at all we appreciate all of it. :3

Also W00t for new mod tools that is always a plus and Prom seems like it shall be an interesting event. xD The items are win.

Bag of Win, it was something I really enjoyed. Keep in mind not all Gaians are against everything the staff does. <3 It seems like it sometimes.

I think that sums up how I feel about the updates :V.

Like what Miles mentioned,I like the new layouts for the arena,it'll actually give me incentive and a far easier way to view the art arena while I'm in another one,but the background looks abit bare,I guess it's no worst than what we have now.I'm also guessing what she mentioned about previous images of the arenas are their landings, will those still be implemented for the final version?

I don't think I said this in your last journal entry, but I do appreciate you explaining the the deal with the Bag of Wi(e)n(ers).People just need to get over it.

Item normalization, like some of the others have mentioned and what DARKNRGY has explained before, will this finally clear up the problems we have been having with the current system as far as exceeding the item limit of your inventory? It is to my understanding things will work abit more fluently and help you keep tabs of the number of items in the system, but will it do any good if you can't keep what you buy on hand (I have lots o' items yo)?

Like Chema mentioned,is anything going to be done regarding the image problem? Still a major inconvenience for everyone and I would like to add more stuff to my signature in general.

Finally, looking forward to the prom event, though I doubt that is the summer event you all were talking about.Though I don't care for shows like Project Runway,I like the idea of working people like that to come up with decent events compared to some of the other things you guys have done.Anyway, thanks for the update.

Bag of Tired: Sorry if my replies were harsh on this subject in the past few days. I hope you keep us updated on the changes of Staff of the Angels.

New Arenas: I like the idea of arenas being more informative and organized, but I don't like seeing it so plain/dead. Maybe more color?

This Week: All progress is good. Can't wait to visually see it. ^w^

The item normalization seems to be working, as my Inventory Arranger loads significantly more quickly than in recent days, but I can still only use my Equip page during down hours on the site. Which really sucks when new items or evolutions come out and I'm stuck in an outfit from the previous night.

Are there changes on the way to make inventory loading more reliable? The upper limit at which my Equip page seems to work has increased by about fifty items (from 1,250) but it still fails to load much of the time. I don't know if I'm just getting bumped out of the server queue for having a large inventory or what, since I'm not getting a server timeout error, but rather just a blank page with the URL in the title bar. It's very frustrating, and again, it scares me out of getting new items.

Thanks again as always for the updates, and for all the hard work. It's really valued. If you need any more in-depth descriptions of these bugs, let me know.

The arenas look excellent! I really love how you're overhauling the whole site, and not just the main pages, and the most used pages.

I couldn't help but notice there was an extra arena at the top of the page there: writing? Quite frankly, this makes me really excited. I would love to post my literature for all to see, and be rated on by the people of Gaia. Is this old news, or is it not supposed to be there?

I can imagine the ordeal of the BoW being tiring. You deserve a hug. -hug-

The arenas look completely different. I'm not quite sure if it's a good way... it seems to be. It's hard to tell from pictures if something works well or not. xD

Haha, I can only imagine how much uproar there was over the Bag of Winï¼› kudos to all the Gaian staff for handling something like that. And honestly, it's the sheer randomness that you guys sometimes throw at us that gives Gaia the sort of fun atmosphere it has, so don't get discouraged! biggrin

Can't wait for the item normalization; we've needed some sort of update - any sort of update - to the inventory system for the longest time. The whole "customization" ability it'll confer on items seems really exciting, as well.

Here's looking forward to the Prom event, and thanks to the Gaian crew... You guys are what make this site truly great. wink

I am very thankful that the cdn issue still in your to-do list (at the top, no less), despite all your other projects...and problems (understatement?) regarding the Bag of Woe Win...

heart And the new layouts for the Arenas look really sweet! I also look forward to the Item Normalization...

Keep up the good work!!! 3nodding

I'm just curious: why are you making everything so square and blocky and removing all color? It doesn't look cleaner and sleeker so much as more sterile and uninviting.
