Chapter Two
BOOM!
Kat awoke startled to a clap of thunder and a sudden shower of rain.
She pushed her shoes forward into the dark, damp mud in front of her, trying to push herself back under the shelter of the only tree she had found for miles. Clutching her knees to her chest, she shivered in the damp cold.
"I know you're here with me, Daddy," she whispered as she clutched the necklace her father had given her many years ago.
More booms errupted in the dark night.
Suddenly a vision of her father popped into Kat's head...
Millen was walking contently through the town market, waving and smiling to every person he passed.
"Hello there, Gregory," he waved kindly to a man walking by.
The man briskly picked up speed, as if he hadn't even heard Millen.
"He must be late for that town meeting...," Millen chuckled to himself.
Others didn't even pick up speed, they merrily walked on past him, chatting with each other as if he wasn't there.
No one wanted to be associated with "the farmer," the man who believed in "faith and forgiveness."
Kat clenched her fists as another clap of thunder reigned loud and clear over the bare countryside.
How could they be so CRUEL? Kat wondered angrily.
Suddenly she had the urge to go out into the rain, and not hide under a shelter anymore. Her feet lifted her almost mechanically, and she found herself out in the cold rain.
She wasn't moving, and yet everything around her was spinning. She could hear her father's voice flowing through her auburn hair with the wind, and she swore she coul see him standing before her with her big brown eyes.
"They'll pay," Kat said, as if to someone standing right in front of her,"They won't get away with what they did to you."
The rain began to fade away, but the storm was just coming over the horizon.
