So you really wanna hear my story?
Well, it's kind of a long story... are you sure you really wanna listen to my story?
Awright then, but I'm gonna have to step back a bit, starting with mah accent.
This is what ah really talk like.
Now that that's over with, yeah, I'm just a country girl in the middle of the city. Before you ask why, it's for a good reason. I'm tryin' to get away with murder.
"Murder?"
That's right. Murder. Sex, blood, family, and a little black magic sent me here for an escape, and what an escape it's been. Whooeee!
"... This is a little confusing..."
And that's why I'm gonna tell you my story, but maybe I shouldn't tell you after all?
"No, go ahead. I want to see how crazy you are before I bolt so that I know whether or not I should call the cops while I'm running or if I should contact R.A.I.N or some other weird place where you need to have a good, long, deep conversation with a psychologist somewhere."
Ah, you don't believe me?
"Let's just see what I do and don't believe..."
Well awright then. Where do you suppose I should start, then?
"Mmm, from the beginning. What the ********? If I'm going to hear a story, it may as well be a good one."
Well, I suppose it's a good thing you asked about my childhood because it goes back almost as far as that, though my story didn't REALLY come up until I was just outta high school. Nineteen years old, I was, and ever' bit as stupid, when I think about it.
"... You were nineteen when you got out of high school?"
I was eighteen. My birthday's in the summer?
"Oh."
Right. Well, I guess I should get to the story then, right?
"Oh! Yeah, go ahead. Sorry about that."
It ain't nothin', don't worry about it. Anyway... well, let's see here... I musta been a good six, seven years old when I found out what my daddy'd been doin', and I had to've been twelve when I realized why he'd been doin' it.
"Dare I ask? What was he doing?"
Killin' people.
"... o_o; "
Now what's that look on your face? Fear? I guess that's how you react when you realize you've been talkin' to the child of a serial killer, huh?
"Uh, yeah..."
Don't worry: I don't think it runs in the family. Not quite yet. The opposite, however, I can't really argue against.
"The opposite? The opposite of killing people is not killing people? So you don't kill people, right? I'm safe?"
More than safe, darlin', but it's not that I don't kill people... er... well, I don't, but not killin' people is not exactly the opposite of killing them.
"... What? Then what is?"
You'll find out soon enough!
"... I can't believe you're able to smile at me like that when you say that."
Well, I'm not gonna kill ya, though I may have to after this is over.
"Oh God..."
Don't take the lord's name in vain!
"Geez, you get more and more yokel the more I talk to you. Can't you just... talk normal for this story?"
Well, it helps me get into character, but if you wish...
"Well, if it really helps you, then can you at least keep it to a minimal? Like... use it when it, like, actually helps you to say it?"
Sure can!
"Alright... so, you were like six when your dad killed people, twelve when you realized why he did it?"
Well, no.
"Oh? So you're lying?"
No, not about that. I mean he's been killin' since before I was born, but I didn't find out til I was six that he'd been doin' it, and I didn't find out why until I was twelve.
"So why was he killin'-I mean killing people? Goddamnit, now you've got me saying it like that!"
Well excuse me for tellin' a good tale that keeps getting interrupted! Yeesh!
"Sorry..."
Oh... well...
"So... why was he killing people?"
You know, I asked myself the same question? Even though I knew he was doing it, even though he found out that I knew he was doing it, he never hurt me over it. We never spoke about it. It was just like this sordid family secret, ya know?
"I guess..."
Right. We never spoke about it, it was just us two, alone, in that little ole house on the farm.
"... Oh god, you were a cow girl!"
You can take the girl out of the country, but you really can't take the country out of the girl, now shut up and let me tell my story!
"Right, sorry, but said he actually had a REASON for murder?"
Well, it wasn't the best one, but I can tell you right now he had issues.
"He MUST have!"
Shut up, that's my father you're talkin' about right there!
"Lay off, you're the one telling me this stuff!"
Oh, alright!
"So why did he kill people, Dr. Phil? Hmm? Did he want them to get off his land or something and he used this as a last resort?"
Mmm, kinda. See, here's the thing. He never told me this: I had to find out on my own. He had a, uh, what's it called... *snap, snap* Oooh, not motive... give me somethin' 'ere!
"A what?"
He had a... a way of killing them. He had a, a, a...
"... An M.O?"
Huh?
"Mode of Operations."
Oh, no.. maybe...
"... Alibi?"
No...
"Well, what the hell are you talking about?!"
He had a specific... thing... he would... ohh!! He went after specific people!
"What, like people who ******** his wife?"
That's my mother yer talkin' 'bout right there, and I'm not gonna stan' fer it!
"Woah, geez, sorry. What, was she like a die hard Christian or something?"
Well, actually she was just a city slicker who fell in love with a cowboy. O' course, I was just a toddler when she died.
"Oh, sorry..."
Not as sorry as I am. I found out muh dad killed her when I was three 'cause supposedly some guy from out of town messed around with her. He's been killin' out'o'towners ever since. They're usually from the city. That's the was mah dad likes 'em. From the city, cold in the country earth. I dunno. The man was crazy, and all I can say is I am GLAD I don't live there anymore.
"... And yet you want to go back?"
To set things right, you could say, but I can't ever go back...
"Why not?"
On account o' what I did...
"You didn't kill anyone, did you?"
O' course not, I already told you it don't run in the family! It's the opposite thing, an' that's why I had to leave!
"Okay, what is with this 'opposite' thing, hm? What is with this 'opposite of killing' thing you keep telling me about, that you never explain, huh!?"
I'll tell you when I get there! Yeesh...
"Alright, we got way off topic. Back to your frickin' story so I can learn more about all of this 'opposite' business."
As I'm sure we will. Now where was I?
"Um... your dad only killed people from the city?"
Yup! How'd you know that?
"Uh, you told me?"
Oh! Oh, that's right, you're right! But did I tell you why he did it?
"Because he wanted them to get of his land? Heheheh!"
*smack* Oh, come off it man. He was territorial, but it wasn't like that. He just didn't like 'em. It reminded him o' his whore of a wife, and ah guess he wanted to make sure that no city slicker would take the last thing he cherished, which was me.
"Oh, he must have LOVED you."
Yeah, well I hated him. Believe me.
"Okay, so we know why you left home, then. You hate your dad."
Ohh, that's the least of my reasons for leaving home.
"Oh, other than the fact that your father is a crazy psycho serial killer?"
Be serious!
"I am! That's all I've been hearing all night! "My daddy's a serial killer! He LOVED me! He killed people from the city!"
*holding her hand over his mouth* You wanna live to regret sayin' that, or should I just kill you where you sit? *retracts her hand*
*quirking his eyebrows* "I thought you said murder didn't run in the family."
Yeah, well, maybe I lied!
"Right. So, you knew, maybe your mom knew and that was another reason Daddy killed Mommy. So, why didn't daddy kill you?"
I never brought it up.
"You never told anybody?"
I never had a reason to. Everybody knew anyways.
*slams hands on the table* "Are you serious!? No way! You've got to be lying!"
It's true! The thing is, nobody really cared about those obnoxious out of towners, so the sheriff in particular would always look the other way and the friends and family of the deceased were usually none the wiser. The people were out of towners for a reason. At best, they got a 'Missing' poster on the carton, and that was the end of that. It would'a kept on like that, too, if it hadn't been for that damned fiancee 'a his!
"Woah... you look a little pissed. This is interesting. What happened?"
Well, I'm not really tellin' the whole story just yet, now am I? It was just a bachelor party...
"Yes? How'd you go to a bachelor party?"
... I was the entertainment...
"... I have no trouble seeing that-"
*glare*
"... From the looks of you, but you? A stripper? You just don't act like the type!"
Well, he was cute and he offered. I'd dare say I fell in love with him the day I saw him. Too bad he was to be gettin' married in a month's time or so. He came in from the city a few states away on account of a long distance friend wanting to throw him a party. It would he one of his last nights as a bachelor, so he wanted to go all out, agreeing with his friend and giving the party a heads up. His fiancee hated it, but he musta told her somethin' cause she let him go.
Biggest mistake of her life.
"What happened? Dad kill him? Friend kill him?"
Oh, hold your horses! Don't get ahead of yourself, now!
"Ohhh, YOU killed him! There, I solved the mystery!"
Why would I kill the man I loved?
"Oh, I dunno, cause HE WAS GETTING MARRIED!?"
I coulda stopped him if I wanted to... *pout*
"Well, I guess you have a point there... maybe..."
Hrrmmph.
"You want to tell the whole story, don't you?"
YES! Thank you for asking!
"Then tell it already!"
Then stop interruptin' already!
"Well alright then! Tell it! Let it be number one of Mother Goose's ******** Up Fairy Tales!"
It really could be, ya know...
"What? A ******** Up Fairy Tale by Mother Goose?"
Yeah.. and don't give me that look now. I'll explain it all soon..
Well, it all started one afternoon, in the summer, right after I turned nineteen... I came into the bar, lookin' for mah daddy, when I saw him sittin' at the bar. He just turned around right as soon as I walked in, and he looked mesmerized.
"I can't blame him."
Oh shush you!
"Well, I mean it! You don't like to admit it, Lynne, but you're ******** hot. You turn heads everywhere you walk! It's not because of your C cups, either, babe."
Shut up!
"Take the compliment instead of denying it! You're a beautiful woman, and at nineteen I bet that guy wanted to rape you where you stood!"
Oh, that's just lovely, and elegant. Thank you.
"You're welcome, now on with the story. 'Like in a fairy tale, he turned around and he saw you standing there, with your blue eyes and long, deep red hair.'"
... Hrrmmm... well, he saw me and he just looked awestrucj, though it could have been my imagination because I was just as enamored with him too, believe me.
"... Was he cuter than me?"
Hah! Was he cuter than you! ... Oh, you're serious!
*thwap* "YES! Was he cuter than me?!"
... Maybe... >.>
*sigh* "The love of my life loves another... my life has has lost its meaning..."
Oh shush, you!
"Well..."
Well, he walked right up to me and said 'Hi.'
"... What? That's it? That was it? He walked right up to you and said 'hi' and he became the center of your world?"
Nooo! ... We talked a bit more...
"About what?"
Well, not that it would matter to you, but we really talked. He told me I was beautiful, but by then it was too late because he'd already told me about the bachelor party and how he wanted to see me there... he joked about the stripper thing... at least, I think he did.
"Uh, he wasn't joking."
Shut up!
*laughing* "You know he wanted to see you lying naked beneath him!"
... Shut up!!
*laughs more*
And stop laughing!
*clears throat* "Right. So you talked, you had your meaningful conversation... what else?"
... His name was Nathaniel Mitchell. He seemed to take a shining to it when I called him Dan for short. Oh, it was such a beautiful afternoon... I held his hand while we walked together and talked together... at some point, we even came near to kissin', but that's when the whole trouble really started.
"Oh?"
My dad saw us together.
"s**t."
Indeed. s**t. I was about to kiss a man who was soon to be married, and I was a young, unwed teenage girl who'd never before so much as kissed a boy on the mouth, and here comes my dad and he looks about ready to blow the man's head off. Well, he pulls us apart, at best, and I considered us lucky for not getting killed for it.
"Seriously!"
... At least, until my dad caught Nathaniel later at the bar. I was there. I wanted to keep Dan safe from Earl, but I couldn't do a think. Earl and Dan walked right outside to have a 'heart to heart' talk by Earl's beat up ole blue truck, and next thing I know, that beautiful, tall, blue eyed, blonde haired man is shot at practically point blank range with a shot gun. He DID try to run away when he saw the shot gun, but he wasn't fast enough, o' course. Right... between the shoulder blades.
I was surprised it didn't just go through his body. I supposed the jacket was thick enough to slow it down THAT much, but it still killed him. I couldn't bear to talk to my father after that, and I thought I'd kill myself if I forced myself to watch him cut up the body as was his usual way of goin' about it, but I did. I wanted to learn where everything was...
"... Wow... was it so you could put him back together in one grave?"
... No... ... Maybe I should have started with my birthday party...
"Wait, this goes back to your birthday?"
If I say it's gonna, then it's gonna!
"Well, what happened at your birthday party that leads into the seemingly random murder of a traveller you happened to have a crush on who seemed to be willing to cheat on his fiancee just cause he took one look at you?"
Grr.. well... I had this... friend...
"Tell me more."
She was weird, but I liked her well enough. She moved in with her parents from out of town. She was into all kinds of worldly things. I loved her, but my daddy never did like her...
"Oh great, I think I can see where this is going."
Well, she had these two books. I was fascinated by 'em cause I'd never seen books like 'em before. They were spell books!
"... Okay, that's just a little weird."
I know, ain't it great?
"Uh huh... tell me where to meet this girl. She sounds like fun."
Well, she was. You can find her in the county cemetary.
"Aw, geez!"
The books were given to her for her fourteenth birthday, back when she still lived in the city. They were given to her by a friend of hers whom she thought was pretty sketchy, but whom she liked well enough. When she saw that I liked the books that much, she told me she'd give them to me for my own birthday. I opposed. I didn't want her to give me something of hers just cause I liked it, but she insisted, and come time for my birthday, I got these two special books from her.
"The spell books?"
Mmm hmm. Oh, but my daddy HATED that gift. A god fearin' man like him, he yelled at me for hours, tellin' me to give my books back to 'that satan girl' and sayin' how he never wanted to see her face again. UGH!
"Sounds like you really liked her."
She was muh best friend! She never understood why nobody liked gettin' too close to me, and she didn't find out til the day my father shot her in broad daylight. I begged him not to cut her up, and that's the day the silence fell. He knew, with words that came out of my mouth, that I knew, and I knew, with him standing over her as she tried to crawl away. 'Help me!' she asked, and I cried out, "No, don't do it!" but in response to her weakened voice... my daddy shot her in the head... she died right away...
"Oh man, that's awful..."
You're tellin' me. My dad didn't talk to me much from there on out. We argued, though. We argued over his killin' people. I told him, "You can't keep doing this! Sooner or later, someone is going to find out and tell people, and you're going to get sent to jail, if you DON'T get the electric chair for what you did to those people! And he laughed! He dared me to tell! "What? And you're gonna tell? Face it, darlin', if you tell you get left without your old man and nowhere to live!" Can you believe that?
"God, that's awful!"
We'd been on edge, til the day I met Nathaniel. That was the day all hell broke loose, as I already told you.
"Right, so your dad kills your best friend over a gift she gave to you, and then he kills your dream man-a guy with a roving eye, by the way, just to point out the obvious. So then what do you do? Or what does he do? I'm so lost it's not even funny!"
Right, the books... well, the night Nathaniel died, I cried, of course.
"Of course."
Mm. Well, after I got done cryin', I raced back to the house, thinkin' dad would be there with his body, to his 'chop shop,' if you will.
"Oh, eww."
Indeed. I forced myself to watch him as he dragged Dan's body to the chop shop. I already knew his usual routine by then anyway. Right and left legs, right and leg arms, head, and leaving the torsp. He would put each piece in a different bag, and hauled them on to his truck. However, this time around, just as my daddy was about to hack away at him he stopped. Instead of choppin' up his body, he then drug the body out to the barn. Don't worry, this shocked me too.
"What the ********?"
Exactly. It was at this point that I knew I'd be in trouble.
"Why?"
Cause there's no way I can silently follow him to the other side of our house, silly! But I had to if I wanted to know where everything was...
"Excuse me, everything? What's that supposed to mean?"
You'll find out. Well, I had to go through the corn fields, but it wasn't that hard. Everybody in town knew what my father did, even if he was doin' things just a little differ'ntly this time, and knew what he was doing-even the sheriff-but nobody turned him in or said anything about it. As a result, my dad got cocky and open about his killin's while still tryin' to make it look like a secret. Thing is, everybody in town knew about it, so it was more and more like the entire town's skeleton in the closet.
When dad went to to the barn with the body, I followed him through the corn fields. He had his flash light on, so I knew where he was going the entire time. It was here that things took a very new, very unexpected turn. He dropped the body off at the barn, then whirled around and started right into the cornfield!
"Oh s**t!"
Yer tellin' me!? I managed to get the hell outta there and into the barn, so I went up into the loft to hide, but first I looked out the window. He was already coming back, with our ol' scare crow in hand, which I thought was weird until I saw what he was gonna do with it. Then I thought it was even weirder.
"What was he gonna do to it?"
I'll tell you when I get there!
"Well, hurry up! It's late and I should be getting to sleep so I can get to work on time tomorrow. Not that this story isn't fascinating and all, cause it's not every day that a coworker tells you their life story about how she was one of the Children of The Corn and her daddy was the leader, but it's late and this story seems really bogus. I've known you for three years, and never in all that time have you told me anything about your origins-not how you grew up, where you grew up, you didn't even tell me where you came from! Just that you came 'From the country' and that's all I know! You have an apartment in the city that I've probably only been in once to twice every year for your birthday and or to take you home from the company Christmas party! You're not the most social person in the world, but when you do go out, you seem to have fun, and then you never call back! What the hell do you think I'm gonna think about your story? It's coming out of nowhere, Lynne! TO be honest, is that even your real name?"
... Yes. Yes, it is. Jenner Lynne Johnson. I changed my first name to Jenna, just to keep it close to my real name, but I tell everyone that my name is Lynne. Are you happy now?
"..."
Sure... well... did you want to hear the rest of the story?
"Yes, I do. So your dad was bringing in the scare crow. What did he do to it?"
I'm gettin' there. So I was out there in the first place cause I wanted to know the location of Nathaniel's body, but I wasn't plannin' on tryin' to get him right then and there. Nope. Soon as I saw what dad did to the body, I raced home and got into bed, thinkin' about it all and just cryin' my eyes out. When my dad came come, I was washin' out the tears from my eyes. He tried to have a heart to heart with me, tellin' me he was sorry about that, but that it had to be done, and that boy was bad news. If it had been as bad as, say, him embarassin' me in front of a new possible boyfriend, or him scarin' him off, it would have fit the situation better, but the fact was that he had just murdered and tried to hide the body of a man I had talked with for not more than a few hours!
"Wow... your dad was crazy... glad he's not here, or he'd probably do worse to me, huh?"
Hoo, are you kiddin' me? That man never changed his way of doin' things when it camed to killin', and I doubt he'd a gotten creative with you.
"Even if I'd popped your cherry?"
Yes, even if you'd... you're an a*****e, you know what? ******** you!
"What do you want to do to me?"
Fu- I hate you!
"No you don't, you just momentarily dislike me, so go on. I'm curious. Why did you want to know the location of your favorite man's death bed?"
Well... I... it was more like his 'death stand' but...
"Wait, 'death stand'? What the ********, Lynne? Death stand?"
... Rememeber those books?
