CHAPTER 4: THE TRUTH UNVEILED
A year passed. An exact year after my Conversion. That day, I stayed in my room and refused to go to any of my training classes. Byron knew why I was behaving that way and he preferred to leave me alone. I spent most of that day, sitting on my bed, thinking of my dead sister, of my family being murdered. I thought about Byron’s reasons to kill them. Why would he do such thing?, I asked myself several times. The servant he gave me, who said his name was Vampire, was ordered to guard me. He sat on a chair, reading, outside my room.
I watched the sunset that day with rage and pain revolting within me. When the sun was almost down, the rage and pain I had felt all day, released itself and I found myself punching a hole in the wall. I tore down a bookshelf and broke a lamp that was just right next to it. Vampire came in my room as soon as he heard the mayhem. I found him standing in the middle of my room with a puzzled look on his face. My anger subsided a little, since I thought his face looked rather funny. He asked me what was wrong, and I couldn’t contain my feelings any longer, so I fell down on my knees and wept. He came to me, picked me up and held me in his arms. I just cried. I was too busy with my sorrows to notice how strong his muscles felt, how firm his pose was while he stood there holding me, and how his arms felt around me. He led me to my bed and we sat down. I stopped crying. He, then, started talking to me. I was startled at the sound of his voice. He rarely spoke and when he did, he spoke softly and politely.
“ Madam…may I ask why are you so upset”
When he said that, I wanted to laugh. His properness seemed out of place and it added to my bitterness. However, his voice hinted interest or concern, which I thought strange, since I didn’t think we were very close friends. I was feeling calmer and since I needed someone to talk to, I decided to confide in him, not worrying about the fact that he was Byron’s servant.
“ Do you know why am I here?”, I asked softly.
He nodded and said, “ I do…I was there, the night that you …were taken”
I was surprised and asked, “ You were? How did you…Why? ”
He said, “ I just followed orders…I was the one who carried your sister…”
When he said this, I wanted to kill him right there on the spot. ‘So he was the one who hurt Emily!’, I thought. “How did you dare touch my sister, you monster…” I said hissing and grabbing the collar of his jacket, bringing his face close to mine. I saw sadness in his eyes, so I let go off him. I turned around and silent tears came streaming down my cheeks.
“ Did my sister die in a lot of pain? “ I asked softly, thinking of my sister’s pale, dying face.
“ She did…but we didn’t kill her…I found her on her room, lying on the floor. I picked her up and brought her outside. We were looking for you…we didn’t know which one of you was you…” he said.
“But how would you know if she died in pain if you didn’t kill her?” I asked, confused.
“ She was poisoned…I don’t know who did it….but she was already dying when I found her…”
“Why were you looking for me? I don’t understand…”
“I’m not sure why…it had something to do with a prophecy. That’s what I heard the others say…If you haven’t noticed…I’m not a full vampire” he said.
I nodded. I had always known there was something about him that was not quite right.
He continued, “since I’m not a full vampire, I do not take part on many of the things they do…”
I interrupted him by asking, “ What do you mean, you’re not a full vampire? ”
“ I am an experiment…I wanted to be a vampire but Byron tricked me and turned me into his servant. They injected me with a some serum that gives me vampire traits. They are trying to see if they can turn people into vampires without biting them ”
I turned around and looked into his eyes. He met my gaze without fear. I knew, then, that he was telling the truth.
“I guess that explains why Byron wouldn’t tell me anything about you” I replied.
He looked surprised and said, “ you wanted to know things about me? ”
I nodded. He looked perplexed and looked away for a moment and faced me again.
“ So, you don’t know much about that night, right? ”, I asked.
He nodded and said, “Just what I told you”
“Well, then I shall find the truth by myself ” I said firmly “It’s dark now. I’m going to my old house. I’ll look for clues…”
“My lady, I was commanded to guard you. I don’t think Byron would approve of you, leaving without permission”
“Byron? It’s his fault that I’m leaving without “permission”, he owes me many explanations and seems to not be willing to give them to me…If he’s not going to do it, then I shall look for them…” I replied.
He nodded and smiled, “Then, My lady, I’m afraid I have to accompany you. I have to keep an eye on you”
I was startled when he smiled at me. He rarely did. I had never seen this kind of smile on him before. I smiled back and said, “Suit yourself then…Let’s go…”
We left the mansion, and took a car. He drove it. Nobody asked where we were going. Byron was away, solving some business in the underground Vampire City. After a while, we arrived to my former home. I got out of the car and stood in front of the house, looking at it for a long time. It had been abandoned and no one wanted to live in it. The house looked so dark, ominous, and there was a very deep silence. The truth was hiding in there, waiting for me to unveil it. I was determined to find it. I took a deep breath and walked to the porch. I put my right hand on the dusty doorknob and wondered what truths lied within my home.
