CONT.
As my training grew rigorous, Byron would test what I had learned by sparring with me. The Vampires had built a place to be used as a practice/training center. Byron took me there as often as he could during the week to spar with him. many other vampires would come just to watch us spar. Many of the experienced warriors and soldiers pointed out my quick pace in learning. Many of them told me that I fought like I had years of experience, even so, I knew I was nothing compared to Byron's level of fighting. I could sense he was far stronger than I was. Every time I thought this, he would tell me that my potential was just starting to grow and that soon, I would be at his level.
During my free time, I would stay in my room and read. I gave up my intentions on trying to make friends with other vampires. They looked at me like I was different to them. Many of the female vampires avoided me. I supposed they didn't like me very much because of Byron. I must admit, he was a very attractive vampire. I'm sure they thought so too, because I could feel their jealousy towards me. Once I heard a small group of young vampiresses talking about me. They were saying I must be some kind of witch that put a spell on Byron or something because he had never been seen spending so much time with a mere New Convert girl like me. They pointed out the fact that I had a room in his house and that his room was across from mine. I heard one of them say that she wished to be in my place. It was evident they didn't like me, so I just rather stay in my room.
Being a vampiress made my style of life be so different. To feed ourselves, we were given bags of blood. Byron explained that to feed, we don't have to go after humans. However, once in a while, he said, that I would feel the urge to kill something and that if I went off to hunt for a human, that I should go after a hobo, or someone who the world would be happy to get rid of.
The urge to have food hadn't quite dissapeared with my conversion. I was told that it would with time and that the Thirst would grow stronger and stronger, and take over. I didn't drink blood right away. I was terrified of the idea of me depending on human blood. Byron explained that the blood we used was cloned and that they owned the cloning companies. On my first month of being a vampire, I drank blood once a week. Byron said I should drink more since I needed as much energy as I could use for my training, but he never made me feed.
I remember that on my third week, the night after the day I fed, I had been reading and had fallen asleep because of exhaustion. The servant was in my room. He was just sitting there, reading too and waiting for me to give him orders. I remember having a dream about me, being a vampire, and attacking my own family. I ripped my sister's neck and blood was pouring everywhere. I started to scream. The servant came over my bed and woke me up. Byron was away in some business, so he didn't come to my room. If he had been somewhere around, he would have heard me and come to see what was going on. I was sweating and crying for the first time since my family's death. I wrapped my arms around the servant's neck and cried on his shoulder. I needed some comfort. He just grew stiff and didn't move. He must have sensed my want for comfort because he put one arm around my shoulder and leaned his chin on my head. I cried for about 30 minutes and then, I quieted down. He let me go and went back to his seat. I was so embarrased after that. I whispered: "Please...forgive me...". He came to me again and handed me a handkerchief. I thanked him and told him I didn't need his services anymore. He said I could call him anytime I needed for something and he left. I stayed up for the rest of the night, standing outside on the balcony, watching the stars. Once in a while, I thought of my sister and my nightmare, and felt tears rolling down my cheeks. I thought about the servant and his strong arms. I felt really weird everytime I thought about him. I tried to figure out what was in his gaze, when he gave me the handkerchief...his eyes where beautiful and had a deep stare. Was it longing, pity, sadness...?. I didn't know. After that night, he was present in my thoughts constantly. He still kept his distance though and I kept mine. But, now and then, he smiled at me and talked a little bit more. This made me a little happier and made me feel more comfortable in my new home.
Eventually, the Thirst took over my whole being, and with this my nightmares dissapeared.
I made my first friend after a month of living among the vampires. His name was Ivan. He was a training to be a warrior. We were in the same class. Ivan was one of the most attractive vampires I had ever seen, he was also very cheerful, strong, honest, intelligent, and polite. He had very gorgeous eyes. He and Byron were very close friends. Byron also sparred with him. We were introduced to each other by him. After Byron and I had been sparring, Byron asked me if I wished to spar with somebody else. Before I could reply, Byron called Ivan from out of the crowd and introduced him to me. After that, we sparred for a while, while the others were watching us. After we finished, he held my hand and kissed it. He said: "It was an honor to have practiced with you. You will be a great warrior indeed". I blushed and weakly smiled, and thanked him for the compliment. I noticed the some of the female vampires talking among themselves. It looked like I was never going to cease to be the topic of 'discussion'.
Later on, Byron invited me to have dinner with him and Ivan. It was a very charming evening. I was happy to have a friend like Ivan. Byron knew that too. He pointed it out when he went to visit me in my room very late that night. I just smiled and nodded. He said he was glad I was starting to get accustomed to my new life. After he left, I thought about how weird it felt to be awake the whole night, and rest during the day. During the day, the windows were covered. The mansion was kept dark. Sunlight is deadly to our kind. Some of us can bear it though. Those who can, are called "Daywalkers". It's one of the human traits that a vampire manages to keep after they are converted. I am a Daywalker. I didn't know I was at first. Byron didn't know either. It's really hard to tell what traits will a third degree vampire keep if he/she manages to keep a couple of them. I will never forget the day I found out I was a Daywalker. I will never forget how that day affected my life and how it revealed part of my fate and my mission.
