cont. chapter 4
Cont.

The place was very dark, but I was able to see clearly. There was yellow tape everywhere. My eyes were fit to see in the dark. The joys of being a vampire, I said to myself bitterly. Vampire walked behind me. I went up the stairs and he said, pointing to a room: “Wasn’t that your sister’s room? ”.
I nodded. I was amazed at his sharp memory. I said, “ Maybe that’s a good place to start”
We went into her room. It was dark and desolate. There was a lot of dust and cobwebs hanged on the walls. My sister’s furniture was still there. There was yellow tape on the windows and all over the furniture. Vampire started sniffing and said: “ Your sister’s cologne…it still strong in this room…”. I smiled. My sister loved cologne and I had bought her a bottle for her 15th birthday. I remember seeing her spray a little of it on her journal. “To remember this day,” she had said when I asked her why was she doing that. My poor sister didn’t have a clue that she was not going to live past that age. None of us did. She was so young, so funny, so full of live. I fought my tears back.
“How do you know, she wore cologne?”, I asked.
“Well, when I found her on the floor, I smelled it…she wasn’t wearing any, but I could smell it”.
I sniffed the moldy air, and picked up the scent. “I wonder where it’s coming from…let’s find the source”, I said
“Right there”, he said, pointing to her bed.
I went over her bed and searched for something that had to do with the scent. There was nothing on the bed. I sniffed again and moved the bed. There was so much stuff underneath her bed. ‘Typical..’, I said to myself. I knelt down and started to move all the stuff around. I noticed a loose board. I pulled it and it lifted off the floor. There was a hole on the floor and in it, there was a cloth bag. I pulled the bag out and put my hand inside it. There was a small wallet with my sister’s savings and her journal. I put the journal inside my black jacket, and looked up at Vampire. He looked away and walked out of the room.
I got up and followed him. He said, “Where’s your father’s room?…I heard Byron saying something about your father…there might be a clue in his room…”.
I nodded and walked to his room. As soon as I went in, I felt the smell of blood. His blood. Somehow, I just knew it was his, even though the stains had been washed off, the smell was still there. My father died in his room. I felt disgusted for a moment, so I went into the bathroom in his room, and the smell of more blood reached me. This blood smelled different. ‘Mother…’ I said. She died there. I stepped out of the bathroom and slammed the door. Vampire came behind me and squeezed my shoulder gently, to comfort me. He said, “ I can smell it too…the faster you find what you need, the sooner we’ll leave”.
I nodded, and looked around the room. I knew where my father kept his ‘prized’ possessions. He didn't trust the banks so he had a secret compartment in his closet. I accidently discovered it when I was playing 'hide and seek' with Emily. Father had told me once about his family's lost wealth, how they lost everything during the Great Depression. His great-grandfather survived it and told the story. I looked around the room thinking about father's little story. The room had the police yellow tape too and it also looked like someone had been rummaging through Father’s things. I went into his closet and removed the carpet that lined its floor. There was a little trap door with a keyhole on it. I used a spell to open it. Inside there was a wooden box which contained a bunch of envelopes, documents concerning his ownership of the house and the land. There was an envelope full of money. Another one contained a small gold chain with a locket in it. I opened the locket and found the picture of a beautiful woman. Her face spoke of simplicity, delicacy, and kindness. Her smile was playful. Her eyes were green and spoke of courage. I couldn’t help to stare into her eyes for a while. I knew those eyes, but I couldn’t figure out how did I know them. Vampire bent over me and said: “Those…are your eyes…is that your mother?”.
“No…this is not my mother…” I said
“But she looks very much like you”, Vampire said.
I shrugged and put the locket in a pocket of my pants. I kept looking through the envelopes. I found one that had strange handwriting on it. I was sure I had seen this kind of writing before. ‘Oh yeah! I know what this is! ’ I thought. I looked up to Vampire and said to him: “This was written by a vampire…I’ve seen this fancy penmanship on the history books…”. I put the envelope inside my jacket, with my sister’s journal.
He nodded. Then, he went out the room.
I got up and followed him. He was standing in front of my room. He said: “This one was yours, wasn’t it? “. I nodded and he went in. I followed him. He was sitting on the bed, looking pensive.
I went over to my dresser and opened one of the drawers. I took out my favorite bracelet. I felt joy for a short moment. I couldn’t believe it was still there. My sister had made it for me a while ago. It was made of blue and white thread and had a black, shiny bead in the middle of it. I put it in my pocket with the locket I had found and went over a bookshelf. I took my favorite story book and put it in a pocket of my jacket.
“ Well ”, I said, sighing, “ I suppose we’re done”. I was getting out of my room when I tripped with loose board. I had forgotten about that being there. Vampire got up in a flash and caught me. Next thing I knew, I was in his arms, looking into his deep, red eyes. I blushed and looked down, and said softly, “Thank you”. There was something in his eyes that made me blush. I felt embarrassed. He smiled and said: “you’re welcome”. He let go of me and we got out of the room quickly.
A few minutes later, we were back in the road. Vampire drove us back to the mansion. I sat in the back seat, looking out the window. Vampire stared at me a couple of times through the rearview mirror. I felt his gaze rest on me but I didn't meet his eyes. My mind was too deep in thought. I was feeling apprehension from
thinking about the truths I would find in the things I had taken.
