She hesitated. She wanted to take off like instructed but the soft click click click of the beast’s nails froze the very blood in her veins to ice which made her freeze. She was visibly shaking and actually had wet herself she was so scared. She didn’t even notice the tears streaming from her eyes, she just knew that she wasn’t hiding anymore as it could probably smell her and hear her teeth chattering like a jar full of nails. She didn’t even realize she had her brother still on the phone who saying his silent goodbyes as he drove like a mad man wishing he could get there in time to save her. Unfortunately, all she knew is she felt hot breath being blown on the back of her neck.
Squeezing her eyes shut as she heard a growl something kicked in and she was up running hard on the edge of the warehouse. She wish she could go deeper but it was so full of large crates, there simply was no room, even for her tiny frame. She’ll curse them later, right now her survival instincts had kicked in and she was doing whatever she could to keep away from whatever that thing was. She did notice that warehouse was running out but there was a window. For a split second she wondered why she wasn’t staying inside the building, that she would be safe and that thing couldn’t get her.
No little one…it will rip the very foundation of that place for your soul. Keep running.
She almost stopped to look around to see where it came from but didn’t.
Go through the window.
Crossing her arms in front of her face trying to for any kind of protection she pushed off and went through the glass. Oh that hurt her arms as the broken glass tried to skin her alive, but she didn’t have time to stop and cry about it. The thing was on her heels. She did manage to get a look before she look forward. It was a dog the size of a small bull with black fur that shone greenish in the light. It’s white eyes seemed to bare into her soul but what caught her attention were it’s claws. They were, in her mind, two feet long, one and a half feet straight out then a massive hook with the tip resting on the ground. She wondered how it could run without bending it’s nail backwards.
Less thinking, more running.
She noticed the voice was not annoyed, mad, or impatient, but it was calming, encouraging, and patient. She ran for it, she ran for it as if it was her only reason to live.
Run home. Get inside your fence. You will be safe there.
She narrowed her eyes and leaned forward a little bit as her lungs were burning and seeming to close up. She’ll be sick later, she’ll hurt later, but right now she was digging deep within herself trying to find that last bit of energy and stamina to make it through to the end. She was no marathon runner, but her brother would be so proud of her and the fact that she was lasting this long. Then she saw it. Her safety net, her home. She didn’t leave the gate open, but there it was, open and waiting for her. She didn’t care, with a dog the size of a bull chasing her a**, Adara probably would have ran straight into the arms of a serial killer.
Push girl, push harder. Your slowing down.
She was trying so hard but she simply couldn’t she was still human when that thing wasn’t. Her only advantage was the fact she had a really great head start from the warehouse. Other then that she was dog food. She long jumped to get on the sidewalk then it would only be a few more yards till the edge of her land, where she could attempt to jump her fence. But her luck ran out. Screaming out as she fell her foot didn’t quite land right on the side walk and a sickening crunch could be heard. Slamming into the ground and the sheer momentum made her skid and wipe off most of the left side cheek from her muscle. Not even noticing she tried to get up and finish the race of her life but her ankle was shattered from the twist and fall.
Crying out she grabbed her ankle and looked back. It slowed down to a trot, it was toying with her now. “No….” she whined out in pain and looked back forward whilst trying to do the army crawl away from it. Looking back again it was mere yards away. Doing her last resort, even though she knew she was a goner, she balled up tightly, tucked her face in between her knees and held the back of her head. All sounds at that point stopped. It was insanely quiet. Not even the sound of the rustling wind could be heard in her ears as time seemed to stop. She quietly pleaded to no one, everyone, the voice, or whomever was listening “I don’t want to die…please help me…” what came out as almost silently whispered, rang out in her ears louder then any bullhorn.
She jumped several times as she heard what sounded like screams that could only be described as a cross between large wild cats, elephants, wolves, bears and eagles. It made her ball up tighter.
Relax little one.
Just then strong clawed hands? Paws? Picked her up and she was out. It was simply too much for her mind to handle.
As the light poured in her room, Adara slowly opened her eyes and looked around. Sitting up quickly she held her chest “What a horrible dream?” she couldn’t remember her dream but remembered it was worse then any movie she ever saw. Getting up she put a fluffy cotton short robe around her naked body, she hated nighties, as it seemed to roll up and strangle her in the night. Walking off to the bathroom she relieved herself and was thinking about what she needed to do for the day. She figured the horrible unrememberable dream was due to the fact she had a ton of homework. Shrugging it off she when to answer the door that was being beaten with the knocker.
“Duo-?” when she opened it, it wasn’t her brother, it was the police. “Yes?”
“Are you Miss Adara Zsofia Agate?” Holding up her school books.
For a moment she wanted to say ‘NO!’ and try to slam the door in their faces, but probably had to ask help from them to shut it in anything faster then a normal shut. “Yeeeaaahhhh?”
They had to hide their disappointment as they wished she would say no and slam the door in their faces. Hell with how heavy that knocker was they would have even helped her to slam it. “Well ma’am there was a murder and your books were by the body.” when they saw her move to let them in “Great….thank you ma’am.” at that moment everyone realized no one wanted the other there but rules were rules.
“I…” she looked around at her things but looked back at them. “Where was it at? I left school and…was on my way home….and…I…don’t….remember?” she was realizing that 2 and 2 weren’t adding up. Was her ‘dream’ a reality? If that’s so, what other ‘dreams’ and ‘holes in the memories’ were there? When she heard where the murder was, the officers had to catch her as her knees went weak. She remembered everything. “By the gods….” walking her over to the large black Victorian lounge they settled her in and sat in the black wingback chairs. “It wasn’t a dream…” she looked up at the concerned police officers. “I didn’t kill her by any means. “ They already knew that since she couldn’t maul but they were wondering if she knew anything.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you” was her response over and over till something flickered in her eyes and she looked down at her ankle. Grabbing it, it was solid like it never had been broken, then she grabbed her face. Again it was in pristine shape. “What in Tartarus is going on here…” She was now more confused then the poor officers, who were wondering if they should call the padded room or back away from her and say that no one was home. In a flash she was up and out her house, getting a ladder from the shed. They wanted to leave the crazy lady’s house but followed to make sure she wasn’t going to hurt herself. However when they got outside and she was almost up on her roof the color left their faces. One it was super high, two she had no underwear on but they had to keep an eye on her, and three were there deamons on that house?!
“Ma’am! That’s not that safe, you know!” their palms were getting sweaty and the bottom of their feet were tingling from nervousness. What the hell was she up to? They just watched in horror as she ran straight up her roof to the gargoyles. If she had thought about it, she wouldn’t have gotten 5 feet off the ground, but she had to know. Did they come to save her? Were they real? If a dog the size of a bull with green fur was real, why not gargoyles? Getting up there she was happy that there was flat spots where they were so she would be a little safer.
Walking up to one that had it’s arms out with elbows bent as if it was ready to grapple something, she ducked and squeezed in only to find out they had to be real. They just had to be. That is what she felt last night other then it had tough leather-like skin not stone, but the way it held her and that hand was the same. Looking up she saw a chisled jaw line, long thick neck with a slight bulge for an adam’s apple and elongated eyes. “what the hell is going on here?” quietly to herself.
