Hey! Listen! So I dived back into the Legend of Zelda for the first time in at least 10 years since I played the original Ocarina of Time. Welcoming me back to L.O.Z. is Ocarina of Time 3ds.
Since it is a remake there is no remarkable change to the storyline whatsoever. I mean most of time you'll be wildly swinging the Master Sword at monsters or bushes. If you are like me and still have the muscle memory of the N64 version, It'll be a nice revisit to Hyrule. For those of you new to L.O.Z. Hyrule is put in danger from a tyrannical Gerudo man named Ganondorf who tries to acquire the Triforce to rule Hyrule. Link with the Master Sword must defeat Ganondorf with the power of the Six Sages to bring his evil grip to an end. Along the way he'll use the Ocarina of Time granted to him by Zelda and learn songs from the enigmatic Shiek to take down Ganon.
Gameplay hasn't changed at all, but the graphics are improved greatly. The detail has gotten better since N64. The 3d aspect gives an interesting feel when playing it but I highly recommend not playing it for long because of the rapid movement most of the time done by Link.
Combat is relatively simple but there is two different styles in Link's respective forms.
As Young Link, aside from height differences, Uses only the Kokiri Sword which unfortunately has terrible range. Not to mention he has the equally awful Kokiri shield which will shatter should it be lit on fire. Luckily he can use the Hylian Shield, but it's much to big for him and he must defend using it turtle style. Fortunately the attack pattern is the same as his Adult Form. He has two form exclusive Items at his disposal, the Slingshot and the Boomerang. The sling shot is fairly accurate and has up to 50 shots. The Boomerang is a launching item and can grab far away items as well as attack or at least stun most enemies.
In his Adult Link form, he has a much more Utility options. He can now use two swords; The Master Sword which has better reach than the Kokiri Knife and is required to slay Ganondorf and the Biggron Sword which requires two hands (thus no shield can be used) but has much more reach and not to mention much more power. He no longer can use the Kokiri Sheild (and why would you want to?), but he can now use the Hylian Shield like a standard shield as long as he uses the Master Sword and the Mirror Shield which is primarily used in the battle against Twinrova and somewhat useful against Gannondorf.
Not to mention that Link now haw the ability to use the Hookshot/Longshot to attack and stun enemies as well as cross chasms on specialized target. He also has his Bow and Arrow set which can be used on foot as well as on Epona (who must be won from Lon Lon Ranch.) The arrows can be imbued with special properties such as Fire, Ice, and the most important one, Light which is critical for the Final Battles. He also gains the ability to use two tunics; the Goron Tunic which resists high temperatures and Zora Tunic which allows him to never drown underwater.
In both forms he has access to Bombs which can be placed or thrown and will explode later. Both forms also have the ability to use Deku nuts which will stun enemies when thrown. Din's Fire creates a heat shockwave to incinerate any enemies and light torches within its range. Nayru's Love which ups your defensive ability for a bit when active. Finally there is Farore's Wind which allows Link to Warp to a designated point in the Dungeon.
Finally the name sake of the game, the Ocarina of Time. The Ocarina is used to unlock and solve puzzles utilizing many simple melodic tunes such as the Song of the Storm, Epona's Song, Saria's Song, etc. L, R, X, Y, A are used to play notes in a melody from songs learned throughout the game. Most important ones are the Warping songs like the Bolero of Fire and Forest Minute. Others like Zelda's Lullaby and Song of Time are critical for game advancement and can be used in dungeon puzzles.
The music, the music, still as nostalgic as ever. I can still hear Saria's Song/Lost Wood theme and my personal favorite Song of Storms. The composer of these tunes are great at what they do. Of course Zelda's Lullaby as the credits theme is simply divine.
Nonny's rating: 9/10. On a pure nostalgic aspect the game is still as magical as I can remember. It's a great game for old veterans and even new players to the Legend of Zelda series to jump into.
Nonny's tip: Memorize Song of the Sun, Zelda's Lullaby and Epona's Song. They are probably the tunes you'll use the most often.
