Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update - 6/18
I don't usually talk about specific items, but I am kind of geeking out right now about having a frickin' TARDIS available in my inventory. In honor of this monumental event, I will give my tribute to the Doctor with my section titles.

Achievementdvoratrelundar
So, the achievements team pushed out a new update, enabling a bunch of new achievements, some of which are going to be a pain to get, but that's good, in a way -- the achievements mean more if some of them are incredibly difficult to get.

Our current plans right now are to continue adding to the depth of achievements in the site, including some that are incredibly obscure or difficult to find. Wouldn't it be cool if you were using the site and then stumbled across some hilarious achievements that you didn't even know existed?

A Ball Of Timey-Wimey Wibbly-Wobbly Stellarite
Based on the messages I've been reading, there's still a lot of confusion about animated items, so I wanted to clear it up a bit.

Basically, when the animated items first came out, we told people that they would only be active for a month. There are a number of reasons for this, but chief among them is that we wanted to make sure that they didn't cause performance problems for the users.

However, the user feedback to the animated items was favorable, and it didn't seem like there were any huge performance problems that needed to be solved, especially given the fact that we had an account setting that would allow users to turn off animations.

So, given that we wanted to do more animated items in the future, we decided to go with "stellarite," a potion that would animate your items for a month. Currently, the potion is being given out in DC -- we'll be adding it to the stores soon for both GC and gold purchase. Stellarite is pretty expensive on the marketplace right now, because the chances of getting it via DC are pretty low -- but rest assured that it will soon become much cheaper.

Note that stellarite applies to the user and not the items. Once you quaff that magical elixer, every single animated item you have will be animated for a month -- you don't have to buy 3 potions just because you have 3 animated items.

The Well-Mannered War On Bugs
On June 28th we're doing something called "Spring Cleaning" -- basically, we're going to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of trying to implement features, and instead going to spend some time and fix the things that have been bugging the users (and us) for a while.

A lot of the work we're considering is behind the scenes -- we're dealing with the moth-eaten code in the attic that the users don't usually see. However, there are some long-standing user requests that we've decided to put up to a vote, to see how much the users care about one thing vs. another.

We created some forums to funnel the feedback, and they are already active. We'll make an announcement about it this weekend, but if you at all care about what we fix or what we prioritize (and you must, if you're reading an obscure developer journal!), please feel free to go to the Spring Cleaning forum and vote away. If we've missed a proposal that you think is really important, please put it in the Spring Cleaning Proposals. Even better, post a reply -- we're using both the number of poll votes and the number of posts as indications of user interest.

Also, as part of a larger picture, this is part of our ongoing experiment in trying new ways of communicating to the user base about the site and allowing the community to have more input. Putting technical issues up to the community wouldn't work with most sites, but Gaia is special; if the reaction to this is strongly favorable, then it helps us plan for similar feedback loops in future development.

So: vote early, post often, recruit friends!

I'm liking the achievements so far; the expansions I've seen from the original elements have been entertaining.

Still don't like that big loud noise that plays though. :/

Also: Spring Cleaning rocks; is there going to be a formal announcement?

@Rayinte: We should announce it tomorrow.

Woo-hoo~! Another journal entry not too long after the previous one. heart And another outfit change! I agree about the TARDIS. whee

Achievements: I am really enjoying this feature. heart I can hardly wait for more Achievement types to be added. However, at the moment my Achievements are stuck; I attained both Popular Thread and Invisibility but have not been awarded Forum Junior yet. I hope this is something that your team can fix easily. sweatdrop

Thanks for clearing up the workings of the mysterious Stellarite. I wouldn't have guessed that it would be applied to the user, but it does make sense.

Spring Cleaning~! User Image Wow, there are so many choices. I kinda wish we could get them all. *toe kicks leaves* I know, there just isn't time. I think this was a good way to incorporate user feedback. You will also know who the dev-stalkers are, since our posts will be timestamped before the Announcement and all. redface

Some projects that are important seem to me to be worth addressing outside of the Spring Cleaning project. I'm thinking especially of updating the Guild code, moving Towns to a secure system, recreating Homes so that it functions, and fixing old games so that they work and have a proportionate payout for the time involved (Yes, this would mean tweaking the Booty Grab payout, as well, since it's definitely disproportionate.). I guess that's why I'm spending most of my Spring Cleaning votes on the "quick fixes"; I hope to see the team accomplish a lot of little things during the allotted timespan and would like to see some of the larger projects worked on over time.

Thanks again for letting the Gaia community in on part of your team's process. Keep up the good work~! User Image

Achievements are such win. Please give my kudos to the description writers. I smile or lol at every one.

I'm also really happy to hear that the animated items will be a continuous thing.

Do you really feel like the feedback on the animated items was a positive one? Based upon MP prices I would disagree.
For the love of Gaia, please sticky your Proposals so people who didn't catch it the first day can find them?(Simone's, too)
Achievements are fun but causing SO many errors. Please don't let this become another feature that is permanent before fixing those errors. Also, it shouldn't be part of Spring Cleaning.

QQ

Seriously? >:

I wanted to re-animate my halo, but not my blush.

QQQ.

By the way some of the acheivments don't register. The.. Daily chance, two days in a row hasn't gone through for me. And neither did saving an outfit (though the one for saving 4 outfits registered, rofl?)

PS: Voting for what gets fixed/worked on = Awesome idea. Though I'm sure everyone hopes all that stuff will get fixed, /eventually/ xD

I'm loving the achievements so far. It's fun to have a goal to work towards that doesn't involve gold for once. (: Any word on if previously completed tasks will be grandfathered in or not?

Thank you for the good news about the Stellarite! I'm very glad to hear that my animated items can be re-animated. (Though now I'm sad that I didn't get an owl XD)

I love that the Stellarite will apply to all animated items when it's used, but is there any chance that we will be given a non-animated pose for each item? For instance, I would want to wear my Spectacular Golden Halo with the animation turned on, but I like the blush better without animation (I love how it goes across the avatar's nose). It would be great if I could choose to wear them that way together.

I think less fancyness in sigs when it comes to tanks, could easily make the need for sites like DM less.

I started using it cause the pages with tanks lag extremely badly. (and that you could make nice amounts of gold was great too ofcourse, I am not going to deny that) But I initially started using it to be able to grab, cause my pc used to crash and freeze when I tried grabbing.

Also the reason why I'd like to see a downloadable client for ZOMG. Some things on Gaia are just only for the rich user with the fast pc. And that doesn't feel fair.

Also for over 4 years we have been promised guild updates. But nothing came of the promises. Since guilds excist we can't even center the home page with a code yet, to mention something simple.

Anyways, keep up the good work. But fix what has been neglected for years first.

I miss meh 9th Doctor t_t

I really like the achievements, but I'm not about to play games with chatterbox. it's kinda a bummer that I can't earn anymore achievements because of that.
but it's all cool I like my beta badges.

I am officially excited for more animated items. :3

words can not express how grateful I am to see communication like this.
I can see you guys making an effort to keep in touch with us and address our concerns, the spring cleaning forums won my faith in spades. XD

I only wish there was a better way to track all this important info as it comes out. I always feel so out of the loop when I see journal posts like this quoted weeks later.

well better late then never, thank you again! :3
