There was something wrong with all of us whether cancer, blindness, or
one of thousands of diseases that no one had yet found a cure to. There was no other
reason we did what we did, only to survive. If we knew what would happen to us. What we would become, what we must see we would have stayed dead.
Our story starts not with our births but with our deaths. We stayed in a complex
till we died not of natural causes but our illness over taking us. We were rushed to the
medical ward, they put us in chambers that froze our bodies to their very cores. then we
waited, waited, waited.
The smell of medicine filled my nose. The first thing I thought was, I haven't
died yet. The last thing I remembered was filling lungs refusing to take in air then
everything went black. However I was conscious (or at least I thought I was) So I
couldn't be dead right? Even though my throat was dry and sore I struggled to make some
kind of noise. Soon I heard a strange gurgling sound that must have been me. suddenly
something was pressed over my nose and mouth and once again I drifted off into a black
dreamless sleep.
I don't know how long I was asleep but I groggily started to wake up and groaned
my whole chest was covered in bandages along with my eyes. Slowly so not to open up
my stitches I sat up hissing in discomfort.
"Is anyone there?" I asked into the void my voice hollow and cracking.
"Who's there? Are you from the facility too?" a soft broken voice sounded somewhere in front of me.
" Cryogenics?" I asked wanting to make sure we were talking about the same facility.
"Yeah can you see anyone else here?"
"No my eyes are bandaged" I said
"My whole body is bandaged except for my nose and mouth. " the voice paused and I heard a weak panting "I can't even turn my neck."
"What do you have?" I asked wondering why the voice needed such wide spread surgery.
"I'm allergic to sunlight and I have sickle cell ." the voice said in a soft bitter voice
"Oh I'm sorry but maybe we're okay now and everything's gone."
"You think so? honestly I can't remember dying so it could just be the same year as I fell asleep only now I'm in a hospital bed next to you."
"I'm not so sure. I feel pretty bad right now but that's mainly because of the surgery. Normally it's really hard for me to breath but now I can really easily."
" What are you here with anyway?" the voice said questioning.
"Cancer. lungs, brain, eyes kidney and liver"
"That's a lot..."
" Well I didn't actually know about the liver or kidney till a week before... well last time I was actually awake I guess, and cancer spreads pretty quickly."
Suddenly I heard the sound of heavy footsteps and the creak of a door. I could tell the person
heard the sound also because they slowed their breathing to a shallow rasp. Soon I felt the familiar plastic cup being pressed over my nose and mouth and for the third time I drifted off into an uneasy dreamless sleep.
For the third time since I passed out I woke up still groggy from the gas placed
over my mouth. My eyes were still bandaged but my chest wasn't anymore as I gently
probed my stomach I felt no stitches only slightly raised skin in long lines down my front
almost as if I'd been burned but besides that I was fine. I could breathe without uncomfort
and move without pain.
"Are you still there?" I asked into the void in front of me. This
time there was no answer so with nothing else to do I sat and sat and sat. Then I heard a
slight groaning sound.
"Oh are you awake?" I said wondering If the voice was still there.
"Yeah. Hey the bandages are gone!"
"All of mine are gone except on my eyes." I said to the voice for awhile there was a silence till I heard a small giggle.
"What's so funny!" I said irritated.
"You- You're hair it's white!" said the voice and with that lost it and started cracking up laughing.
Once the voice finally got itself under control I snapped
" If my hair's white then I wonder what yours is" and with that the laughing stopped
completely.
"Sorry it's just, I've been really tense this whole time and it seemed so funny I
couldn't help it. "
"It probably does look pretty funny huh?"
"Yeah just a bit."
