Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update 5/18
Inventory Arranger
New inventory arranger went out, and while there were a fair number of people who really enjoyed the upgrade, there were unfortunately a number of misconceptions and bugs.

The major misconception was that you couldn't select multiple items -- you can select multiple items, but you just need to do it the normal way on (most) platforms, which is select and then shift-select on the other side of the region.

The first version also went out with a bug that caused the arranger to get out of sync with the actual inventory -- so you'd organize and organize, but in the end, it didn't seem like your inventory was organized at all, because the items you thought you were organizing were actually different than the ones the back-end thought you were organizing.

At any rate, the current version (v3.5) should fix all the bugs except one. There's still a case on the backend where when you move to an insertion point between selected items, it does not do the right thing; specifically:

given A -- 1 -- 2 -- B
select A and B
move to between 1 and 2
should end up with 1 -- A -- B -- 2
but end up with 1 -- 2 -- A -- B

So, for now: if you move single items, or only move multiple items selected by shift-select, you should be fine.

(Extra credit points: If you think there's another bug in the inventory arranger, we'd love to have a simplified test case; the easiest way to do this is to open your inventory in one window, the arranger in another, and when you do a move do a refresh in the inventory window to make sure that the database agrees with the user interface. Okay, only 1 in 1,000 users will go to this trouble, but we love those of you that do!)

Promageddon
Promageddon went out yesterday, to much fanfare, and of course the big news yesterday was that free Gaia Cash was being given out. It might seem the height of folly to give out Gaia Cash, but accounting regulations are interesting, and the fact that we're taking the cash back if you haven't spent it makes it much more palatable to the accouting types in their caves. While admittedly not totally altruistic (as we hope that some people will decide that having Gaia Cash is so nice that they'd like more), it is nonetheless nice to be able to give a gift like this to the community.

And remember, this is just the pre-event; the events team has tons more cool stuff planned for the upcoming week. Have fun. biggrin

EDIT: So a question came up regarding mixing of the free Gaia Cash and real Gaia Cash. Basically, the free cash is always the first spent when you spend any sort of cash... so if you spend more than 40GC, you won't have any taken away. Also, given the way that we're doing it, it should be impossible for anyone to lose any GC that they've purchased with money. Specifically, when we expire the cash, we do something like this:

- when was the person granted 40GC?
- sum up every purchase since the grant
- was it less than 40? then expire 40-(sum of purchases)

... and we'll be running checks and double-checks to make sure that we only take away free GC.

Cronjob? That sounds profoundly dirty.

Looks like a good list of fixes, and thank you for the Arranger improvements. It's much faster, and it can be used on every machine that I use.

People should also know that you can select multiple items by holding down ctrl+click. That will select just the items click instead of all of the items between them as well, which is what you get with shift+clicking. Of course that may be what's causing the shuffle issue, and each time I've selected multiple items in the new Arranger and moved them this way, it's moved my equipped items to the location I was trying to move the other stuff.

EDIT: My Captcha was "new locks," which reminds me: any idea when we'll get those new security options? I'd love to have that re-verify feature in case somebody tries to access my account from a far-flung IP. How will that verification work, with a secret question of some kind or just an e-mail to the address associated with our account?

I also wouldn't mind an option to soulbind my own belongings. I know for certain that I'm never going to sell many of my items. Is there any way we could place soulbindings on our own stuff that expire in 3-6 months or so, or even longer? That way if my account is compromised they can't trade away my most valuable belongings. It seems like it might make it easier on the hacking team as well.

Still jumbled my inventory, (I put all my inventory into the storage locker, alphabetized, then shift-clicked the whole thing and moved it back into my inventory) although I did like how much faster everything load and I no longer get a script error when I go onto it.

I would love if there was just an automatic alphabetize button, because that's all I want to do as far as organization. I know we can alphabetize in the inventory arranger, but I would like it if we could just save it like that so it was alphabetized in the real inventory.

I have a bug to report, but your example of a simplified test doesn't hold because it involves moving things to the storage locker, where they can't be seen on the main inventory page...

When I select multiple items and move them to my locker, their order is reversed. So if I select items ABCDEFG and move them over, in my locker they are in order GFEDCBA. The same holds true for moving from the locker to the main inventory.

Once I learned to avoid that, organizing much better than it did before, though, so good job to everyone who worked on the Arranger!

I don't know what exactly causes it, because it doesn't happen every single time, but whenever I use the CTRL key to select multiple items in the arranger, sometimes doing that will cause all my equipped items to move to the top of my inventory. In fact it happened just 2 days ago.

Yet hold me against the light, do you see any bullets inside?

Thank you so much for the inventory arranger in the first place. But more importantly, a huge PRE- thank you for the upcoming guild updates. Being a huge guilder, seeing those in the making really puts a smile on my face.

You wouldn't find one if you magnified, because you got the wrong girl.

I have a question about the cash.

I had like 72 cents prior to the cash so that bought be up to 112. Then I bought 15 dollars worth after seeing the new items. (Your plan worked on me razz ). I spent 14 ish and have 131 left. Will I lose any of my money or am I safe? Because I spent more then .40 so I should be safe right. (I just wanna make sure)

Also thanks for the arranger updates it's so awesome that I can use it again. Before my computer would freeze and never open the arranger. I found all kinds of goodies in storage. xd

Thanks Joico.

@Joico: Oh, good question. No, you're fine if you've spent more than 40GC -- I'll make a note of that in the journal.

Thanks for letting us know about how to select multiple items when moving inventory to and from Storage. I should have figured that out myself, but had a duh moment instead! lol!

Oh, and while you guys have the Arranger code open, is there any way we could get a Trash Item button on the navigation? It works fine in the regular inventory viewer, but if you're trashing a bunch of items at the end of your inventory you have to reload the first page and then click back to that last page each time you want to trash a new item. Having it in the super-speedy Arranger would be much appreciated.

What I have shown you is reality...

Well I'm one of those 1 in 1000 people that keep checking my inventory to see if the changes where being made (Since I spent an hour yesterday organizing to have nothing happen).

So far the changes seem to stick if you move everything one at a time (like you said) but not if you use the Control - Select key. Shift - Select also doesn't work for me either. It will maybe move two things but not all of the selected items unless I do them one at a time.

I also got this error message while moving things:

Quote:
Unable to reorder your inventory. Please reload and try again: The table 'iio_84' is full

EDIT: It turns out the Shift- Select only works part of the time.Items that I have equipped don't stay in the same place I put them. They end up grouping back together right in the middle of my arranged invo.

Hey, Pam!

While arranging my inventory, my stuff got not only more messed up (stuff selected not moved, random stuff moved to the selected spots)but also the inventory moved up all itens I was wearing at the time. Now I`m afraid to try to arrange them to their places and end up a lot more messier... Were you aware of this bug?

Thanks!

Mobile version of Gaia = win.
Free gcash = bigger win. I've haven't bought any in a while because there's been nothing in the Cash Shop that interests me lately. When I was buying gcash, I was using it to make investments in EIs and MCs, kinda like buying stock. Somewhat. Maybe razz

As for the new header footer, I'm interested to see what the header will be because I think it's fine as is now. The footer... that's a different story.

By the way, has Gaia ever considered adding an option to mark a friend request as spam? I starting getting so much of it a few weeks ago I had to turn my friend requests off completely.

Anyway, thanks for the updates, Pan smile

1. Please make a single button to organize things automatically by type. I mean permanently, not only in inventory arranger. It would help a lot.
2. The last arranger version (3.5) is really hard to scroll up when you drag things. After mouse goes outside the table header, movement stops. (using Firefox 3 on Vista, Flash v. 10, if it helps)
3. Why not to trash items from inventory arranger?
4. For not very smart people like me it was hard to move things from very bottom to top. Today I found a fast way: a) Ctrl-click things to be moved. b) Ctrl-click the thing at the destination place. c) Drag the last selected thing to position just above it. d) All your items are on the right place.
5. Could you implement Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V to cut and past items? Much easier than dragging. The items cut could look transparent but staying on the same place and the space between items would be selectable.
6. I would like to be able to close the storage locker by clicking the "storage locker" caption. Right now it does nothing when the locker is open.
7. Maybe you're not the right person for the problem, but after I entered the proving humanity two words and clicked "Preview" button to see how this comment would look like, your journal post was viewed as bb-code.
8. Also in preview mode the Captcha thing at bottom was missing and after I clicked "submit" it caused an error and asked to enter the two words again.

One last thing, is there any way to speed up the scroll speed in the Arranger? It takes me about 36 seconds to move something from top to bottom in an inventory of 2700 items. I haven't risked the ctrl+click technique since I don't want to risk shuffling my equipped items to the top, because if that happened I'd have to cope with, y'know, the slow scroll speed one item at a time. It's a vicious cycle, really.

Other than that, the Arranger is great now.
