Development Update -- 1/26
Gaia as Flower
I was experimenting with different representations of the traffic of Gaia; it helps give a better feel for who is doing what on the site at a time. For your enjoyment, you can see the map from about 3:00pm yesterday:

User Image

Of course, this is running live in our offices, so it's interesting to see how the visualization changes over time (although I clearly need to change the way that the site traffic is represented -- ugh, more time).

Guilds Changes
Over the next few week you'll be seeing one small feature addition and a bunch of UI tweaks to guilds.

We think that people are overwhelmed by the number of guilds, and the difficulty in finding an appropriate one, so we're adding the capability for guild captains to add keywords to their guilds -- that is, five words or phrases that best represent your vision for the guild.

This is part of a longer term plan to make it much easier for us to promote guilds to people; we can, for example, offer them likely guilds based on the interests that they've filled out on their profile.

I always hear from people that keep asking us to do something about guilds, so this is a good chance to demonstrate that guilds are important to you -- fill out the keywords for your guild! We're hoping to get a good set of keywords so that when we turn on keyword searching for the users, they'll be able to find stuff.

(Another way of looking at this: if you fill out your keywords, you'll have an advantage over every other guild that does not fill out the keywords).

The reason guilds hasn't been updated in a while is that it's running on an substantially different source base than forums. It's been on our list of things to renovate; it's just a lot of work that needs to be done to migrate it over, and we're trying to prioritize it against everything else that needs to be done.

GuildBot
GuildBot was broken for a bit -- we had to go in and clean up some stuff, and it should be working again.

Inventory / Shopping Changes
You probably have already seen the announcement about some of the inventory and shopping changes that we will be pushing live in the near future. The look is substantially different (and seems well received by about half the people, hated by the other), but the advantage is that it should perform substantially better; fieryange1 has done a bunch of changes to try and make it speedier for you to use.

The inventory arranger won't be touched in the first update. I'm still hearing about a number of problems with the arranger -- mostly that it is slow to load and sometimes still jumbles items up.

New User Quest
We're reactivating the new user quest in the next couple of weeks. The rewards aren't amazing -- no exclusive items or anything -- and it offers nothing challenging for most of the readers of this journal, since it is really basic stuff: voting in a poll, updating your avatar, stuff like that. However, it does offer a more... gentle approach for Gaia, since the feedback consistently received is that Gaia is kind of overwhelming to the first time user.

Edit Buttons Vanishing Mysteriously
We had a problem in the forums where people would suddenly not be able to edit their posts, or they would have an edit button for other people's posts, or something like that. [72] had a suspicion that it was the template cache -- a cache that we use to speed up page rendering. He changed forums to disable it, and it turned out that it appeared to fix the problem (or, at least, the users that I was talking with say that it's fixed, so that is good enough for me -- I always found the bug perniciously hard to reproduce).

Page Speedups
Over the next month we'll be retooling some of the Javascript code on the site, trying to make it load and run faster. Coaster_vn has been taking a look at our menu code, which is apparently ungodly inefficient, so he's replaced it with a much lighter, faster version that speeds up both load time and makes the menus work much better.

Invading North
This isn't definite yet, but -- we are seriously looking into making our cash cards available in Canada. More information if this becomes definite.

I think the new changes to the inventory look awesome. The inventory is a dinosaur, and you're just modernizing it. If that somehow causes coincidental similarities between other social networking sites which also have modern designs, that's fine. Don't let those "OMG MySpace = Gaia" fools bug you about it.

That many at a login.php at the given moment? How many are bots/crawlers?

Is login.php being loaded inside of something else to check the login or something?

The flower is great! And I like the fact that the new user quest will be back. Yeah, inventory changes I've been quite vocal about it. Hate it! But the fact that guilds are going to be worked on soon is great and I'm not even a guild user.

This sounds great! I am very excited about all of the changes coming to Gaia.
It is a good thing that the guilds are being gotten around to.

commentCommented on: Thu Jan 29, 2009 @ 02:35am
It would be cool if guilds had a rating system, and there could be a top 20 guilds page. [/random suggestion]

I personally didn't like the announcement about inventory changes when I first saw it (visual aspects), but it helped immensely seeing a Developer-made thread in feedback, for users to give suggestions on what they like/don't like/want to see. (Someone should put a link to it in the announcement!)

Hmm.. "Shopping" changes though? The announcement didn't mention anything about that. o.o What's gonna change? surprised

I'm glad the edit button is fixed! It was constantly missing. eek It's funny how we take things for granted though. It kept disappearing for so long, but I didn't even realize it was fixed.

Gaia was overwhelming when I first joined, with only 4 tabs and no subtabs. I feel sorry for users who join today, especially if they have no forum site experience. emo

If the whole page-speed stuff works out could you guys look into removing the 800 item cap from trades? Or do something to make trading more efficient?

Omg flower chart wins.
And it looks like the lowest number is account.
that looks pretty good imo. c:

And I'm so looking forward to guild changes.
Thanks for this so much. ;__;

As far as I can see all of the upcoming updates are excellent. The new Guild Search is a great addition, it'll be much easier for the Smaller Guilds to get some recognition now.
I am rather curious as to the Inventory and Shopping update, does this perhaps include layering options? (Gotta hope xD) From the image that was provided in the announcement it looks very smooth and well planned. I look forward to trying it out.
The Edit button issue has not reappeared for me for a while now,as far as I know no one else has had it either. Woot! <3
The New User Quest will be very useful, as fun as Gaia is, it is a bit much to handle when first registering. Some guidance will be very helpful ^.^
All the updates sound fantastic, kudos to everyone!

Just a quick note, Pana - while I'm sure the Gaia dev team is aware of the current Towns issues, surely it must be worth at LEAST making an announcement telling people to be careful? A lot of people seem to be getting hit pretty hard by the current security failures - it seems logical to shut Towns down altogether (hey, at least only 1140 people will miss it, and half of those are the problem anyway wink ) until it's patched back up.

But at the VERY least, an announcement would be great. Perhaps you could pass the thought on to whoever's responsible for such things?

Thanks for the diagram, too - very interesting reading. smile Interesting to see how few people are in the forums at any given time!

I absolutely LOVE the map representing the traffic on Gaia. I've always been curious about that especially since zOMG was released.

Wow, lots of changes. I, personally, enjoy them all.

Keep the good work. biggrin

I think the new Dress-up screen looks really nice. I'm curious to see how it goes when I use it. Will you also be changing the default Inventory screen? I'm just wondering because sometimes when you have a cluttered avatar or use a background item, it covers up the "Customize Me" link on the Inventory Page. (Yes, I know there are other ways to go to Dress-up. Just stating this for the record. xp )

I'm really excited that Guilds will get a facelift. It would be great to see more customizing options opened up to Guild owners, because one of the biggest complaints I see is that there's all this gold in the Guild's funds, but all you can do with the gold is create subforums. So hopefully with this update, maybe Guild owners can have options to change some aspects of how their Guild forums look, maybe even emoticons or special recognition symbols for their Guild Staff (that of course would look completely different than real Mod/Developer status), etc.

I think the Edit button thing is fixed at last *yay*, because I haven't had an issue with it lately.

I don't know if you have any control or if this is your department, but is the "page speedups" part of your entry going to deal with the fact that pages constantly time out for me? Lately I've just given up on loading the site, because it will time out during daily chance, changing my inventory, while I'm making posts, trying to buy in the MP, etc. It seems to always get stuck on a certain set of numbers (whatever that string of numbers is that appears in my status bar... IP number..?), so if having those would help I can share those.

Neat chart. Looks like a lot of people are on forums and profiles. It's weird to see so few people on Zomg, though. I guess a lot of people were at work or school.

Page speedups will be welcome.

Ah~~ Yes please, bring the cash cards to Canada! That way, I could stop at the 7-11 by my house on the way home from school and get one... wink Or so~

Yeah for Cash Cards in Canada, eh!

Thank you for sharing the map. It's really interesting to see where all the traffic is.

I like the new Inventory, but I think most are upset because it removes a lot of old school Gaia from it. Perhaps adding a wing in the corner (like we have in Journals) and making a thicker, coloured border would appease half of the half that hate it? Then it's 75% new Inventory love. That's not too bad. 3nodding

Yeah, the Arranger is a steaming pile of poo, to put it bluntly. sweatdrop
It's unwieldy to use and doesn't even really work. When I heard inventories were fixed and no longer shuffled equipped items to the end of your stuff, I did a little heel-kick and went to re-arrange my inventory to my liking. After about an hour of tedious placement, I went to check the fruits of my labour...only to find it was even more jumbled than before. It was the head desk heard round the world, I reckon.

I'm psyched for the new dress up scheme, though. Aesthetic isn't anywhere near as important to me as utility, and fiery's been doing a bang-up job thusfar, so I'm quite optimistic 3nodding

Oooooo! I'm really excited to hear of the javascript changes coming to the site! CarbonPhyber has been looking into it, but I'm really hoping that those of us being tripped up by the current way the javascript is being wonky can sometime soon access zOMG (the normal way.. xD), and not to mention I'd love to finally be able to have an Aquarium of my own! <3

Thanks for all the hard work, I look forward to the new shiny fixes! heart

As always, your team's been so, so busy! 3nodding We appreciate it!

Inventory has already been loading faster for me the past few weeks, which is really nice. I hope the new one doesn't break anything when it launches. Also, I wish the tabs could have some color back in them; don't tell me you're gonna make me actually READ which section I'm accessing now?! sweatdrop I'd love to see the Gaia wing make an appearance on that sterile-looking page, too.

The flower is so cool; thanks for sharing! I am looking forward to seeing some changes in the guilds in a little while. whee

As always, keep up the great work! User Image

Captcha: $100 anonymous. I think it's a Canadian tip to expedite the cash card access. rofl

Very exciting to hear about these changes. I'm not horribly thrilled about the guild changes as I like guilds as they are now. I own an unused guild. The inventory things, however are very exciting. Glad to hear that you guys are aware the arranger has issues that need resolved. As far as the arranger goes, when I am on a mule with less than 100 items, it works pretty good. On my main with over 3K items, it's slow (firefox lets me know there's a script that'll slow my computer down. But if I abort the script the arranger won't load). I've not tried recently to reorganize as I get sick of wasting hours on my inventory. @_@

First off, that's a really cool map of the traffic on Gaia; it all seems well spread out too. As for Guilds updates, I don't really use them much, especially considering zeta testing is over, however adding on keywords to find guilds sounds like a good idea. I did check them out once for kicks, trying to find one that might actually be interesting, but the list went on practically forever...
Now I'm glad you posted about the changes coming to inventories and avatars. I'm excited to see changes to them are finally being rolled out that appear significantly more modern and eye pleasing. I just hope you managed to cram in a feature that would allow us to save appearances we'd like to have handy if we ever wanted to quick swap out our looks (bonus note: could turn it into a gold sink; pay gold to have more storage slots). But it's actually not avatars I'm the most happy to see being changed, but rather the inventory arranger. I'm disappointed to see it won't make it into the first batch of updates but I am looking forward to the changes.
Turning the new user quest back on - good idea; just dropping them right into to Gaia is a little daunting.
Edit buttons - good to see the problem was found.
JS recoding - so you have noticed it could be potentially faster...
Invading Canada - Gaia wants to take over the world, right? Gotta branch out from the US some time or another wink
And as for a closing comment, I noticed there is now an option to login to Gaia as a guest. FINALLY. That makes it tremendously easier to see what Gaia really is, vs. just being able to read some brief text on a home page. Nicely done.

And the rest, is history...

Eeee! Canadian cash cards! I'll finally be able to do something! >w<

Definitely looking forward to the menu being streamlined - I fight with that cursed thing all the time.

Also looking forward to the inventory change. I'm a little sad about the colours going away, since I'm so visually oriented, but I'll get used to it fast enough that it's not worth being negative about. It looks clean and crisp! Good stuff!
And I can't wait until the arranger gets fixed, too. It's a bit of a crud-bucket. D:

Thanks for keeping us all so informed! <3

For the love of Lanzer, please make sure the forum to which the New User Quest directs people is Welcome To Gaia...and not the GCD... gonk

I've noticed the Shortcuts menu is far slower in Firefox than IE. I wonder if the new menu optimizations will change that...

If Coaster_vn would apply this miraculous new dropdown code to the Shortcuts menu, I would be incredibly happy. Clicking on Shortcuts can result in literally a second or two delay before the menu actually appears.

Awesome to hear that the JavaScript is being reworked to go faster.

Perhaps someone can change the inventory in the marketplace "Sell Item" so everything is links instead of Javascript again? It is extremely annoying to always have to turn Javascript back on just to sell an item in the marketplace. D:

Yay to cash cards coming north of the border and into Canada eventually maybe.

Re: Menu options in IE and Firefox. Yes they open much faster in IE, but I'm noticing that they open and close so quickly that you have no room for error in clicking, because if you don't click fast enough they disappear again. It's very irritating. Just as irritating though is how slow the menus open in firefox.

If/when the inventory arranger is updated, it would be very nice if game items were made arrangeable. I for one would like to be able to put my game items in some sort of order. Making the whole thing less cruddy in general would be great too.

If you're going to have a keyword search system for guilds I'll hope you will be putting a keyword pool of sorts that shows what words people have used and how popular they are. It's really annoying trying to figure out a word the guild might use as a keyword. It'd also help thinking up our own keyword. Else I'm all for making it easier to search.
