Arrr, mateys, time for our weekly yammering. Pull yourself a steamin' cup o' grog, put your cutlasses in the dead body o'er there, and sit down for a tale that will chill your bones![1]
GIM
So, the GIM launch had its share of issues. We had decided to go with AOL for the backend -- and, at this, a hundred of threads spawned that said, "But I hate AOL/AIM!" Nonetheless, AOL has the largest market share in the US, and they also had an architecture that is relatively easy to plug into, so we went with them. It's important to note at this point that this doesn't mean that you have to have any AOL software on your system: our instant messenger is entirely in Javascript, so you don't need any programs at all. (Well, some Firefoxes are saying that you need Quicktime. Ignore it, and just turn off sounds. We're trying to track down that problem).
We're using AOL's network, but we actually have our own namespace -- which means that if you wanted, you could use your favorite IM program, log in with yourname@gaiaonline.com and your Gaia password, and be able to communicate with all your Gaia friends.[2]
Tracking down the communication issue with AOL involved a couple of us Gaia folks in a room, and a geographically distributed set of AOL people that signed onto the conference call with names like "Ops," "Ops-Sec", "Net-Ops", and "Wombat." (I am not making this up). Nonetheless, they were very helpful, and after some false starts we managed to resolve the problem.
The second problem -- the one we resolved this morning -- was for people with non-conformant names. You see, in the dark ages of Gaia, back when MCs were rare and valuable and you had no clothes when you started and you had to play fishing for 8 hours to make 2 gold, we allowed people to have any characters in their user name. This was used and abused (lots of [NPC] ImAScammers), and for various other reasons we eventually restricted people to just characters and spaces. Anyway, people with old style names had problems logging into AOL, but we think all those problems are resolved.
So, bottom line: you shouldn't be getting 502 errors anymore, and if you are still having problems logging in, please add a comment to the feedback thread.
Over the past two days we've had over 2 million messages sent, and usage is only increasing. We're pretty happy with it overall.
Common GIM Questions
Q. How does the gold grant work?
A. Every 10 minutes, if you've been using GIM, we grant you some gold. You can get up to 200 gold per day. So, if you log into Gaia every day[3], and chat with your friends, then you can get 6000 gold per month. You'll get a "You got xx gold for using GIM" or something like that.
Q. Explain the mysteriousness that is Gaia Guild Bot.
A. Well, we're enabling a feature next week that allows you to send messages to your guild. Behind the scenes is an online bot that takes care of receiving your message and sending it to everyone else. For various reasons to do with the AOL API, it has to be a logged in presence that is in your buddy list, which is why you see it there. For a lark, we decided to have it say witty sayings... and that launched it from the ranks of lowly bot to NPC Stardom. We plan to launch a morning show for Guild Bot, since Guild Bot's patter is much saner and less boring than most morning hosts.
If you think that you could come up with a witty saying that is hilarious and witty and mysterious and PG-13 safe, then hold onto your hats and watch the forums...
Q. Why does the chat window keep coming forward?
A. Yah, it's annoying -- since we're playing a sound, the browser wants to force the window making the sound forward as well. Turn off sound.
Q. Why are you working on #$%@$!# GIM instead of zOMG?
A. GIM is being used as the backend for GIM. We're adding the notion of "clans," which is like a guild (except that you can only belong to one clan). In zOMG you can communicate with your clan easily in the flash interface.
Q. Why are you working on #$%@$!# GIM instead of guilds?
A. GIM ties very nicely into our future vision for guilds -- basically, by allowing people to easily communicate with other guild members, we make guilds more cohesive and a better place to meet people.
Q. I want to chat with multiple people in the same room
A. Well, wait until next week, when we enable guild chat. Or go to Towns, Rallies, VJ, or one of the game rooms. biggrin
Aquarium
The "highly interactive flash toy" I referred to in my last journal is in fact Aquarium, which is a fairly neat toy; it'll be interesting to see how people react to it. The pricing on the items has not been finalized, but I have the feeling that most of them are going to be cash shop, which means that a lot of people are going to be peeved.
I understand this -- I was perennially poor through many of my formative years[5] -- but... wait a couple of days. A flood of items will hit the marketplace, and the prices will drop, and you'll be able to buy it with the gold you earned IMing your friends.
zOMG Focus Testing
We had a couple of focus tests for zOMG in the Gaia Offices, and it was really interesting to watch people testing zOMG and see what they had problems with and liked. The team for zOMG has really done an amazing job, and the game has had an amazing trajectory over the past few months.
zOMG won't be everyone's cup of tea -- if you're a minmaxing PvPing undead shaman in WoW with highly optimized gear choices for every situation and eight-three addons, four of which you wrote yourself, you may find zOMG not complex enough for your jaded tastes -- but if you would like a lightweight, "fun" MMO that you can play with your friends that doesn't take over your life, zOMG may be the game for you.
Store Glitch and Bannings
Okay, a tale of strife with a happy ending.
We had a store glitch that allowed people to buy items without paying gold. Well, some users found out how to exploit it systematically... which meant that the next week at our antibot meeting we were discussing what to do about it. The exploiters had dumped a fair amount of gold into the economy, and we really wanted to do something about it.
Through a series of miscommunications that are obvious in hindsight but were not obvious at the time, we accidentally banned too many people. They weren't automatically banned -- all bannings were done by a human -- but nonetheless, we goofed, and a bunch of people were (very understandably) peeved.
So Chaos Butterfly started a thread about the unfair bannings, and many vendors started talking with one another.
I saw the thread and got a bunch of PMs, and in talking it over with Sagger-AT3, decided that we had made a mistake, so a bunch of us the devs and admins got together to fix our mistake. In the end, I think we took care of everyone tht was innocent, but if you are innocent and are still banned be sure to fill out an appeal -- see the thread for details.
The other cool thing is that a bunch of the people were talking with one another and actually got to know each other better rather than just names on sniped bids in the marketplace -- so in a way this illustrates the bad of Gaia (admins made a mistake!), and the good of Gaia (devs and admins actually listen and tried to fix a mistake), and the great of Gaia (a bunch of people got to know each other better).
We'll make more mistakes in the future, I guarantee it. I hope we can make less of them, and deal with them better, but it's a learning process.
=====
[1] It's "Talk Like A Pirate Day," matey.
[2] Well, not literally yourname, unless your Gaia name is yourname.
[3] Which I heartily recommend.[4]
[4] Especially if said users like to give witty, literate comments in journals.
[5] Well, the saber tooth tigers worried us more. But I rarely had any money for treats at the clan rituals.

I love GaiaGuildBot, and last night as GIM really got up to speed everyone in the main thread in which I post spent a fair amount of time sharing the transcripts of our chats with him...it? It seemed as though he liked certain people and disliked others, as his sayings would tend to be mostly positive in one conversation and rather discouraging in another.
Thanks for answering the main question I've been hearing about the new feature, which is how do we send a message to a whole guild. I'll spread the word that that part hasn't been implemented yet.
I am super excited about the aquarium feature, so please don't get discouraged by all the party poopers who will undoubtedly complain about the items being in the cash shop and 100% of Gaia resources not being focused on the issue that concerns them most. I think it looks really neat!
