Notes From Gaia
Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update 9/15
Arrr, mateys, time for our weekly yammering. Pull yourself a steamin' cup o' grog, put your cutlasses in the dead body o'er there, and sit down for a tale that will chill your bones![1]

GIM
So, the GIM launch had its share of issues. We had decided to go with AOL for the backend -- and, at this, a hundred of threads spawned that said, "But I hate AOL/AIM!" Nonetheless, AOL has the largest market share in the US, and they also had an architecture that is relatively easy to plug into, so we went with them. It's important to note at this point that this doesn't mean that you have to have any AOL software on your system: our instant messenger is entirely in Javascript, so you don't need any programs at all. (Well, some Firefoxes are saying that you need Quicktime. Ignore it, and just turn off sounds. We're trying to track down that problem).

We're using AOL's network, but we actually have our own namespace -- which means that if you wanted, you could use your favorite IM program, log in with yourname@gaiaonline.com and your Gaia password, and be able to communicate with all your Gaia friends.[2]

Tracking down the communication issue with AOL involved a couple of us Gaia folks in a room, and a geographically distributed set of AOL people that signed onto the conference call with names like "Ops," "Ops-Sec", "Net-Ops", and "Wombat." (I am not making this up). Nonetheless, they were very helpful, and after some false starts we managed to resolve the problem.

The second problem -- the one we resolved this morning -- was for people with non-conformant names. You see, in the dark ages of Gaia, back when MCs were rare and valuable and you had no clothes when you started and you had to play fishing for 8 hours to make 2 gold, we allowed people to have any characters in their user name. This was used and abused (lots of [NPC] ImAScammers), and for various other reasons we eventually restricted people to just characters and spaces. Anyway, people with old style names had problems logging into AOL, but we think all those problems are resolved.

So, bottom line: you shouldn't be getting 502 errors anymore, and if you are still having problems logging in, please add a comment to the feedback thread.

Over the past two days we've had over 2 million messages sent, and usage is only increasing. We're pretty happy with it overall.

Common GIM Questions
Q. How does the gold grant work?
A. Every 10 minutes, if you've been using GIM, we grant you some gold. You can get up to 200 gold per day. So, if you log into Gaia every day[3], and chat with your friends, then you can get 6000 gold per month. You'll get a "You got xx gold for using GIM" or something like that.

Q. Explain the mysteriousness that is Gaia Guild Bot.
A. Well, we're enabling a feature next week that allows you to send messages to your guild. Behind the scenes is an online bot that takes care of receiving your message and sending it to everyone else. For various reasons to do with the AOL API, it has to be a logged in presence that is in your buddy list, which is why you see it there. For a lark, we decided to have it say witty sayings... and that launched it from the ranks of lowly bot to NPC Stardom. We plan to launch a morning show for Guild Bot, since Guild Bot's patter is much saner and less boring than most morning hosts.

If you think that you could come up with a witty saying that is hilarious and witty and mysterious and PG-13 safe, then hold onto your hats and watch the forums...

Q. Why does the chat window keep coming forward?
A. Yah, it's annoying -- since we're playing a sound, the browser wants to force the window making the sound forward as well. Turn off sound.

Q. Why are you working on #$%@$!# GIM instead of zOMG?
A. GIM is being used as the backend for GIM. We're adding the notion of "clans," which is like a guild (except that you can only belong to one clan). In zOMG you can communicate with your clan easily in the flash interface.

Q. Why are you working on #$%@$!# GIM instead of guilds?
A. GIM ties very nicely into our future vision for guilds -- basically, by allowing people to easily communicate with other guild members, we make guilds more cohesive and a better place to meet people.

Q. I want to chat with multiple people in the same room
A. Well, wait until next week, when we enable guild chat. Or go to Towns, Rallies, VJ, or one of the game rooms. biggrin

Aquarium
The "highly interactive flash toy" I referred to in my last journal is in fact Aquarium, which is a fairly neat toy; it'll be interesting to see how people react to it. The pricing on the items has not been finalized, but I have the feeling that most of them are going to be cash shop, which means that a lot of people are going to be peeved.

I understand this -- I was perennially poor through many of my formative years[5] -- but... wait a couple of days. A flood of items will hit the marketplace, and the prices will drop, and you'll be able to buy it with the gold you earned IMing your friends.

zOMG Focus Testing
We had a couple of focus tests for zOMG in the Gaia Offices, and it was really interesting to watch people testing zOMG and see what they had problems with and liked. The team for zOMG has really done an amazing job, and the game has had an amazing trajectory over the past few months.

zOMG won't be everyone's cup of tea -- if you're a minmaxing PvPing undead shaman in WoW with highly optimized gear choices for every situation and eight-three addons, four of which you wrote yourself, you may find zOMG not complex enough for your jaded tastes -- but if you would like a lightweight, "fun" MMO that you can play with your friends that doesn't take over your life, zOMG may be the game for you.

Store Glitch and Bannings
Okay, a tale of strife with a happy ending.

We had a store glitch that allowed people to buy items without paying gold. Well, some users found out how to exploit it systematically... which meant that the next week at our antibot meeting we were discussing what to do about it. The exploiters had dumped a fair amount of gold into the economy, and we really wanted to do something about it.

Through a series of miscommunications that are obvious in hindsight but were not obvious at the time, we accidentally banned too many people. They weren't automatically banned -- all bannings were done by a human -- but nonetheless, we goofed, and a bunch of people were (very understandably) peeved.

So Chaos Butterfly started a thread about the unfair bannings, and many vendors started talking with one another.

I saw the thread and got a bunch of PMs, and in talking it over with Sagger-AT3, decided that we had made a mistake, so a bunch of us the devs and admins got together to fix our mistake. In the end, I think we took care of everyone tht was innocent, but if you are innocent and are still banned be sure to fill out an appeal -- see the thread for details.

The other cool thing is that a bunch of the people were talking with one another and actually got to know each other better rather than just names on sniped bids in the marketplace -- so in a way this illustrates the bad of Gaia (admins made a mistake!), and the good of Gaia (devs and admins actually listen and tried to fix a mistake), and the great of Gaia (a bunch of people got to know each other better).

We'll make more mistakes in the future, I guarantee it. I hope we can make less of them, and deal with them better, but it's a learning process.

=====

[1] It's "Talk Like A Pirate Day," matey.
[2] Well, not literally yourname, unless your Gaia name is yourname.
[3] Which I heartily recommend.[4]
[4] Especially if said users like to give witty, literate comments in journals.
[5] Well, the saber tooth tigers worried us more. But I rarely had any money for treats at the clan rituals.

Feeling pressured to be witty and literate, I naturally find my writing skills reduced to elementary-school level.

I love GaiaGuildBot, and last night as GIM really got up to speed everyone in the main thread in which I post spent a fair amount of time sharing the transcripts of our chats with him...it? It seemed as though he liked certain people and disliked others, as his sayings would tend to be mostly positive in one conversation and rather discouraging in another.

Thanks for answering the main question I've been hearing about the new feature, which is how do we send a message to a whole guild. I'll spread the word that that part hasn't been implemented yet.

I am super excited about the aquarium feature, so please don't get discouraged by all the party poopers who will undoubtedly complain about the items being in the cash shop and 100% of Gaia resources not being focused on the issue that concerns them most. I think it looks really neat!

I have to say I'm glad that everything is getting underway [I feel like I'm using that term wrong...].
It jusst sucks that I can't access My Guilds to partake in the testing. [ emo ]

With that said. I've gotten back into the swing of using an IM, so I'm having fun with GIM.
And the fact that I can log on anyway is even better.
And I'm doing it right now successfully, which makes it even better! [ whee ]

Aquarium looks really interesting. I can't wait to see how that turns out!

EDIT: Now the big question is... Do we still get gold even if we're on a different IMing program?
And am I ever going to be able to fix my house?
[No matter what I download I can't fix it and my browser ends up crashing]

Hey there, ya horn swogglin' scurvy dog. I'll be layin' low the day the aquarium CS prices be announced. :3 Thanks for the heads up.

I thought the announcement said:

"Gaia Aquarium will have its own dedicated shop for fish food, backgrounds, and decorations. There will also be some premium aquarium items on sale in the Cash Shop."

Which, if your feeling is most will be in the CS, that announcement is misleading as it says "some" in reference to the Cash Shop. I don't mind "some" items in the CS, but I feel that there should be a good brunt of items in the gold shops. I feel like I'm preaching to the choir, but if Aquarium is a more paid service, it will severely skew the user base.

GIM is okay. I have no some friends, so I won't use it much. I did make some suggestions in your thread, hopefully you'll have time to go through the 2000 plus responses.

I do hope that once you have zOMG out of the way, I'll start reading about the journal and guild updates.

I would honest to god much rather prefer to buy the items with cash, if the prices were more reasonable.

"The other cool thing is that a bunch of the people were talking with one another and actually got to know each other better rather than just names on sniped bids in the marketplace --"

There's a guild for vendors where people already do this, though not in the shining lights of SF. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those people already knew eachother, I even recognized several people on the list.

*Insert Random Suggestion Regarding Aquariums*
Fish breeding. Please.
Fish breeding + Fish from the Gaia Fishing game (make it compatible)
Would help get more rare fish into the market. Yay for everyone? (Ofcourse the probabilities of a successful breeding would have to be low, and difficult to achieve, in order to spare a lot of grief from the people trying to monopolize rare fish)

saber tooth tigers? you puppy! back in my day it was the velociraptors you had to watch out for...

i'm stoked about the aquarium - i hope we don't have to wait too long for it and i especially hope it all goes off without a hitch just to spite the whiners. wink

Yikes. I thought all those items I sniped on were from the zomg boxes or something. Well, now I feel bad for taking part in a glitch.

One suggestion for fishes themselves, is let them 'die' of neglect, or at least be sellable to NPCs so they never become as pointless as newsprint comb overs. Maybe PETA comes to save them if you're ignoring them?

Love the updates as always Pan but I'd love to see one on the status of our inventory/storage box. The scrambling and random placing of items between the inventory/storage box is what has me the most concerned.

Looking forward to the Aquariums. I adore stuff like that.
Thank you for all you guy's hard work. heart

Thanks for the update; it's even an annotated edition again. whee It's extremely informative, as always.

It's good to hear that the vending glitch was fixed and unnecessary bannings overturned in a timely manner, too. Good job, team!

GIM is a lot of fun so far. I love having my Gaia smily set available; I've always felt hampered using other IM services and not having some of my favorites. I've even earned some gold this way! Nice! blaugh

Do something fun this weekend! You deserve it!

It's a thief in the night to come and grab you. It can creep up inside you and consume you. A disease of the mind; it can control you. It's too close for comfort. I feel like a monster...

Well, I dunno; my other comment seems to have disappeared into oblivion, so have a new one!

1. Woow, I didn't know yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day. My math teacher started doing it in the middle of class and we all thought he was joking. XD

2. GIM is bit redundant to me, but if you're gonna do all this other stuff with it, maybe not. X) Not to say I don't like it, though, haha, because I definitely do.
In my excitement after reading your post, I went and tried to log in on my AIM software, but it's Version 5.9.6089 because I do not like the new one so much. It totally didn't work, and I was sad, but I tried logging on in AIM Express, and it worked! So I downloaded the new version of AIM like an hour ago, Version 6.8.12.4, and that solved the mysterious unable-to-log-in problem.
Uh, is there a reason for that or something? Just wondering. ^^;;

<3

So you said every 10 minutes we use gim, we get 200 gold. Do we have to be actually IMing or just signed on?

Also, since you said GIM comes with Gaia's own namespace, we can just login with another app. Well I tried with iChat and had no success. I'll try it with Adium when I'm done typing this out. But I do second the question of "Do we still get gold if you use an external app?"

2 million IMs is a good start. Nice one.

EDIT: No luck with Adium either. Was the idea we could login with other clients a theory or is there a special setup that has to be followed?

As for the bannings: I was very glad when I and most of the other vendors got their accounts back yesterday. To be honest, I was afraid, it would take weeks and I'd miss the start of zOMG. So it's good to know that you and the others took care of it so quickly. heart

Since I'm not part of this vendor guild someone mentioned, for me it was a great thing to meet the others I always see when I'm vending. ^_^

But is it safe now to vend and to resell the stuff I bought there to the shops? I really don't want to risk to get banned accidentally again and at the moment I'm really afraid to resell anything I got from the marketplace or from the daylies...

Please please please please PLEASE tell me there will be the option to NOT BE IMed by my guilds? I'm in a number of guilds that I am NOT active in, I haven't used my guilds in months probably... and I really do not want to suddenly be getting random messages from them.

Please?

Also- stalker option- can I turn that off please?! I frequent forums (like Life Issues) that I don't want my friends following me into so easily. I know they could look through "My Posts" but that's a lot more effort than "Oh look, a convenient button in IM!"

PS- GaiaGuildBot is not responding to my IMs. crying

I'm quite excited for Aquarium. It looks like fun!

I have a question about GIM. If I use my own IM program, will I still earn gold? I'm a hardcore Trillian user and that would be much convenient. But I'm also a horrible moneygrubbing Gaian! What to do, oh WHAT to do? lol

Super informative, as always, Pan! Thanks for the various updates and insights.
Although..that one thing you said about Aquariums kind of set off a few alarm bells in my head.
*Most* of the items will be Cash Shop? That really bums me out, because I don't buy Cash and I am generally pretty strapped for gold...I know the prices do come down, but it's not exactly a speedy process, especially when the items are going to be attributed to a hotly anticipated feature. It just makes me sad because I'm really excited for Aquariums, and while I wouldn't mind at all if some or even a bunch of items for it will be Cash...I don't know, I just feel that if most of it is CS stuff, I'm not going to get the opportunity to enjoy it. sad

Fufufufu...pirates, such ridiculous excuses for warriors. I celebrate Talk Like a Ninja Day instead. Since ninja are masters of secrecy, the exact day itself is known only to me, and since ninja are also masters of silence, I spend that unspecified day lurking. ninja The ultimate homage to the ultimate warrior.

Ahem.

There are a few things about GIM that I find annoying...like the fact that, even if you haven't gotten an IM in several minutes, the latest one still pops up at the top of any page on Gaia, and closing that display brings the chat window to the front. Also, see my comment in the feedback thread about text formatting (it's on Page 16 or 18...I saw the feedback thread before the announcement was posted.) On the other hand, watching GuildBot hilariously fail the Turing Test will be good for some silly brainless fun if I have nothing to do and want to earn Gold doing it.

I'm not hugely excited about Aquariums; it strikes me as rather similar to Cars in that it has absolutely nothing to do with anything else on Gaia. Cars, though, has plans for the future; I've heard you guys are hoping to let people drive cars in Towns or something like that. Will Aquariums have any tie-ins? I understand being able to place an Aquarium in your Gaia House as furniture, and still having it contain all of the decorations and fish you've chosen, is asking WAAAY too much, but maybe just a button in Gaia Homes to view someone's Aquarium the way there's a button to view the Journal would be nice. Otherwise I'll probably never use Aquariums unless the Clam can give items not found anywhere else on Gaia...especially since I don't like the responsibility of online 'pets' that wither and grow ill if I don't tend them every few hours.

CAPTCHA: endowment month. Here's hoping Gaia will be endowed with many wonderful new updates this month![/reallystretching]

The aquarium idea is not something I'm exactly ..excited for, but it sure seems interesting enough. I still think it's a shame you can't use fish you catch though. When people asked for aquariums I'm certain they wanted to use lake fish, you know. And I can't really blame them. Who wouldn't want to be able to look at that Diamondback Lion?

Maybe there will be a work around. Mercury treatment for the fish? rofl

I know you all get an earful when something goes wrong, so I wanted to say again that I think you handled the store banning error exceptionally well. From the admin/mod acknowledgement and involvement in the thread from early on to having a well-documented path for making sure our accounts were included (to understanding that most of the negativity stemmed from confusion and shock!) to investigating so quickly, I don't think it could have gone much more smoothly and professionally. You get a gold star next to your names from me!

We're using AOL's network, but we actually have our own namespace -- which means that if you wanted, you could use your favorite IM program, log in with yourname@gaiaonline.com and your Gaia password, and be able to communicate with all your Gaia friends.[2]

----------------------------------

I like to think I'm pretty good at figuring this stuff out but I can't find one IM program including AOL's AIM that will let me connect to GIM. Perhaps you can ask someone in the GIM dev department to write up a little help file for people interested in using a stable IM program rather then there browser? Personally I like AIM (v 5.9.3861) the best but I have no idea how to set it to use Gaia's GIM.

Yeah that's all fine & dandy with GIM.
I'm not that thrilled to hear that the fishtank stuff is going to be a if you can fork over the cash you can use it thing.
Anyway on to my main reason for being here what is the ETA on the inventory fixes. In you last journal update you said that you were hoping to get it in to the Q&A session and that there had been a "fix" already done. What was that fix because my main accounts inventory is still behaving like a hyper active two year old and throwing everything all over the place.

GIM is nice and all, but I think once I'm able to, I'm just going to log into it through Pidgin since it's more convenient. I admit, I was really hoping "Broadcast messages" meant being able to send mass PMs like "bulletins" or something to guild members.

I hope the account page will be fixed soon, because it's like a randomizer and you never know what settings you'll get once you hit Save D:

I'll pick my words carefully...

I don't see as something positive that EVERY item of the Aquarium can be pruchased by cash, and more important, there is always a need to catch the users first with gold. What am I trying to say? Be smart, Gaia. Put the items you think users will like the most or are more usefull (Or nicer) and the rest just make them to be purchased by gold.

Having ALL the things on the CASH wont be productive at all. Don't over-do things, you can have the same profit by being smart.

commentCommented on: Sun Sep 21, 2008 @ 01:47am
Well, I was interested in the Aquariums until the part about "most of it will be in the cash shop." That's the 2nd thing this week for that to happen. I'm very disappointed we can't put the fish we catch in Fishing into fishtanks/bowls for houses, or use them at all. Most of the reason people wanted fishtanks was for that reason. Why didn't you guys just expand the Fishing game to let us catch other creatures (or items to use to decorate with) to then put into a fishtank? Personally I think it would be more fun to "earn" or exchange for items for my fishtank, and then of course you could offer "premium" items in the cash shop in addition to that.

I used to be a fairly big defender of the whole Cash Shop thing in SF, and now I'm really disappointed because most of the new features are becoming pay-to-use. Yeah the stuff goes in the MP after a time, but you often have to wait a long time for it to become cheap enough, and really by the time I even save up for it (after buying EI's with gold because I refuse to pay $7-10 for ONE item), the buzz for it will be over anyhow.

And I know it's in Decided Issues and all, but it bears saying again-- all these new features are great, don't get me wrong... but what about our inventories? Housing? Guilds/Journal updates? Some of those issues have been ongoing for years.

It just seems like things just get created for the heck of it, and they're really hot for a short window of time, then they get exploited, break/glitch, get boring, or the items become worthless/useless. So we have a bunch of features already that many of them fall into this description. Rather than tack on more independent features, why not expand on some of the existing ones? I'm not saying to NOT make new features at all, but can't there be a mix? I feel like a lot of the old features are hopeless and abandonned, and I really enjoy some of them.

I hate to sound like "one of those whiners", but a lot of the ongoing stuff lately has really made it hard to enjoy things around here. I guess there's always hope for a decent Halloween...

I'm going to guess GIM isn't working on iChat, AIM, Pidgen, etc because the password bounces as multiple people have now reported. I seem to recall from a while back that Gaia uses MD5 and a salt for user authentication. My guess is either the salt or md5 is causing the password rejections since I think AIM just uses SSL and probably doesn't know what to do with a salt so it just ignores the request.

Now I just wonder if this was an unexpected problem or intentional to force us to use GIM vs a 3rd party app.

What about f*ing Inventories?? Did you just totally forget about it or is it just not important enough for you to fix.

This is seriously messed up. You are really unaware of what people want and need if you do not fix inventories ASAP.

Some Questions about GIM...

Do I get gold say if I'm logged in using the MSN client?

Do I only get gold if I'm actively chatting, or will I get gold for simply being logged in?

Is there a way it can be fixed so that I can still hear the beep, but not have the window come forward? I like knowing when someone has sent me a message, but I don't want it to interrupt what I'm doing. I noticed it'll do a scrolling message on the taskbar, but I also noticed that sometimes it'll do that even if I've read everything people have sent me.

I had more to ask, but I've since forgotten what those things were... anyway, I like it for the most part so far. I'm interested to see how the guild stuff works and what not with it.

All nice updates and new stuff.

but can you give the people in guilds any indication when the (new and old) bugs and glitches will be fixed.

The new ones are there for over a week now. >.<

And I will be excited about the guild option in GIM when it works properly. XD

Aquariums looks rather interesting. I'm intrigued. GIM is pretty spiffy. So, GIM had me sign on and pick a new name, I'm guessing because of the space in mine. And I did. Then it made me pick a second name. So now I have no idea what name I'm using when I log onto GIM, the first or second. Should I need to know this? And do you know, are inventories being worked on? >_>

My dearest friend, if you don't mind...

You're right, Pan. zOMG will not be everyone's cup of tea, and neither will it be mine since I'm just a spoiled lil brat that likes good graphics and deep gameplay. biggrin But I'm not saying that zOMG won't be a good game razz And I'm glad most of the bannings were reversed and I think the excess gold will eventually flow away in one of the many gold sinks this site has, or one of the future store updates.

...I'd like to join you by your side

Meebo, basically a browser-based Trillian that just dies a lot instead of having a seizure just wen the net disconnects, can't log into the username@gaiaonline.com AIM account.

So... List: (taken from previous posts)
Meebo
Trillian
AIM
iChat
Adium
Pidgin

^ Those apparently cannot log into GIM. (GaiaIM, not GoogleIM)

I don't understand why you think it's okay to put the aquarium items in the cash shop even though you KNOW people are going to be pissed about it = / You basically just admitted that you guys are okay with pissing off your userbase as long as it nets you money.

I normally dont post in place like this but I must say Gaia Is sure coming along I would say in coding and visual. For alot of reasons I can see why you guys do some of the stuff here on the website.

last note not to be picky but undeads can not be shamans, change that to like a orc or a tauren or a troll, or a dranei sorry only those races can be shamans. unless you can always go undead rogue or undead warrior, sorry I play a little too much wow but only until zomg come out. Which is will jsut give me something else to do.

Thanks for an average gaian

I tried this using MSN, didn't work... as others have suggested, perhaps a more informative "How-to" would do wonders. Browser is fine and all, but it's not practical when doing work that involves the browser because at least for me, it causes lag. I was very much looking forward to being able to use it with MSN, but eh well.

GIM won't work with Trillian either; could you get with them and see if they can add you to the list? The choices I have are AIM razz , MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ, and Jabber. Or I could try to get them to contact you, if I knew your email. (You can send that in PM if you want; I won't tell anyone else.)

I'd love to add this to Trillian, but I can't if they won't give me a choice. sad

God/dess Bless America!

Draw me if you will - who knows what you may get in return? Just send me a PM with a link to your drawing!

and don't forget to tap & grab!
