Sunday, May 4th. Church parade. What is that? when a regiment marches through the city streets, from their home armoury, to the "regimental" church. Today a platoon of Infantry, the massed Pipes and Drums, the Colour Guard (carrying National and Regimental flags as well as the Battle Honours, 3 squadrons of cadets, and The Association (Vets) marched about 3 miles, 5Kms to us metric users, celebrated a mass to remember our fallen, and marched back again. For the soldiers and cadets, easy peasy, even in the rain, oh alright, drizzle. But for 14 vets, of which I'm the youngesr, at 54, and all of us hurting, NOT BAD!!!
Today is also a national day of rememberance in Holland, and a gentleman from a small town that was in the middle of the battle of the Sheldt, on the road between the coast and Germany, came to award 6 WWII survivors official recognition in the form of "freedom medals" and scrolls, extolling their bravery. Very touching ceremony, to see these 80+ wheelchair-bound gents trying not to cry remembering comarades lost .
