Chapter 13

My crewmates sat back, smiling and teary-eyed. They were all talking at once; it was nearly impossible to tell what each person was saying.
"Captain, I can't believe it--"
"--Jaquie--"
"--We thought you--"
"--Couldn't find a pulse--"
"--You were bleedin' so badly--"
"Hnh, no wonder I'm all bandaged up."
"Jaqueline, we thought you were--"
"Dead?" they all nodded solemnly, "I was."
"But how--"
"What, ya di'n't see the black cat?"
"No, Cap'n Sparrow."
"Great. Okay, I'll explain. I did die. I talked to my mum down in Davy Jones' locker. She told me that I lit'rally have as many lives as a cat. I just lost a life. No biggie."
No one spoke as I looked from face to face.
"What're y'all starin' for?"
"It's just--"
"--You're so--"
"--Calm."
"Well, I was pretty surprised when I found out. Oh, hey, I saw Cap'n Collins."
"Really?! How'd she look?"
"Pretty good for someone whoe's been dead for five years."
We all laughed at that.
"Hey, could somebody help me up here? I've been on my back for, what, the last five weeks?"
Tayu and Neji each grabbed one of my hands and helped me to my feet. I staggered, unused to holding up my own weight, and bumped into something rock solid.
"Careful there, Jaquelin." Vash smiled down at me. Man, his eyes were so beautiful; navy blue, like the sea at dusk.
"Whoops. Sorry, Vash."
"Captain," Sakura grabbed my arm, "maybe you should sit down. You've been sick for a few weeks and you were just--er.." She seemed hesitant to say the word.
"Dead? Okay, Sakura-chan. You're the crew's doctor. And one of my closest friends. I'll sit."
