"Hands touch, eyes meet,
Sudden silence, sudden heat.
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl,
He could be that bou, but I'm not that girl."
I was bored. We'd been traveling for days. Elizabeth's father, who turned out to be a governor (oops, I shouldn't have been playing with his wig), had forbidden us (Elizabeth, Jack, and me) to do any work on the ship. Jack and I were guests, and so we were to leave all work to the crew. Ugh. I was so bored. I had nothing else to do, so I thought of my crew and sang.
"Don't dream too far,
Don't lose sight of who you are.
Don't remember that rush of joy.
He could be that boy.
I'm not that girl."
Another voice joined with mine. It was Elizabeth.
"Ev'ry so often we long to steal to the land of What-Might-Have-Been,
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in."
After we finished the verse, Elizabeth turned to me.
"I understand the meaning of that verse," she said, "I love a man, but I just agreed to marry another man to save his life."
"Really? what other man?"
"Commodore James Norrington." She stuck out her tongue in a childish expression of disgust.
"Who, that puffed up popinjay? I wish you luck, luv." I threw bac my head and laughed. Then I stopped and looked at the sun's reflection on the sea. I continued singing, a wishfulness tinging my voice.
"Blithe smile, lithe limb,
She who's winsome, she wins him.
Gold hair with a gentle curl--
That's the girl he chose, and heaven knows,
I'm not that girl.
Don't wish, don't start.
Wishing only wounds the heart.
I wasn't born for the rose and pearl,
There's a girl I know--
He loves her so..."
I faltered, tears starting to roll down my cheeks. Suddenly, a raven fluttered down onto the ship's railing! It opened it's beak, but instead of a caw, a beautiful voice came from it!
"I'm not that girl," it sang, "Hiya, Jaquie." Elizabeth and I stared at the bird, dumbstruck. A talking raven. It talked in a woman's voice, and it knew my name. Waittaminnit! I knew that voice!
"Scarlette? Scarlette Ebon? Is that you?"
The raven hopped off the railing onto the deck and transformed into a beautiful, tall, red-haired woman.
"That it is, Jaquie, old girl," she said, arms spread wide, "That it is!"
I practically jumped into Scarlette's arms, I was so happy to see her. Elizabeth was still staring.
"Jaqueline," she said, "who's this?"
I let go of Scarlett with one arm as I turned to answer Elizabeth.
"This is my good friend and first mate of the Sparrow, Scarlette Ebon."
"Ahoy, mate." Scarlette took off her hat and swept a low bow.
"But Jaqueline, Captain Sparrow, I thought you said all your crew drowned."
"I thought they all had, 'Lizabeth."
"Ah, well Jaquie," Scarlette's smile stretched form ear to ear, "there's another vamp secret you hadn't learned yet. We can't die by drowning. Or any other way except by human means."
Once again, I was dumbstruck.
"Captain Sparrow?"
"Jaquie? What is it?"
"If it's not possible to drown--do you mean--? Is Vash alright? And Tayu? And Sakura-chan and Neji? My friends, my crew--they're all alive?"
"Yup, Jaquie, they are. Every last one of 'em. Even Genevive."
My shoulders sagged a bit at the mention of that name. Genevive was my rival; and yet, she was also still my friend.
"Oh," I muttered, "I had kinda beee, y'know, halfheartedly, hoping she'd died."
"Jaquie, I know she's your rival an' all, but she's still your crewmate, and your friend."
"I know."
"She was wounded though, when Vash 'n' I found 'er. Piece of somethin' got her in the head. She's okay now. Got a scar, though."
"Heh. Serve's 'er right. The little strumpet relied on her looks a lot."
"C'mon Jaquie, let's go. The crew's waitin'."
"Leavin' us so soon, sis?" Jack strolled up, a kicked-puppy-look on his face.
"Jack, why'd you call me sis? YOu never do that." I frowned, thinking this might be another dream.
"I know," Jack still had that look on his face, "I thought it was the only thing I could call you, 'cuz I call everybody 'luv', and everybody else's callin' you Jaquie. So, leavin' so soon? Why?"
"I goota! I just found out. Jack, my crew's alive! They're waitin' for me. I'll stay in touch. If you need help or just wanna talk, just touch that scar on your chest and call my name. I'll hear, no matter where you are. even if you're in davy Jones's locker. 'Kay?"
Scarlette changed into the raven she'd come as, and I transformed into a pheonix; red with orange, yellow, and purple tail-feathers and wings. As the two of us took off, I plucked one of my tail-feathers, dropping it on the deck. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Jack pick it up and stick it in his hat.
