*Huff huff*
Sasuke ran down a long corridor. His heart was beating all the parts to an entire drumline against his ribs. To his ears it was so loud that he was surprised no one had come down the hall to find the source of the noise. He passed some more locked doors.
*huff huff taptaptap huff squeeak*
"s**t!" Sasuke skidded to a stop in front of one more closed door at the end of the corridor. This had to be it. He grasped the doorknob. It turned; odd, it wasn't locked? Sasuke stepped into a blinding flash of light. Now he knew what Shizukae had meant when she said her sister took sayings way too literally. It really was a glass house.
"Huh. 'People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw bricks'. That is one queer ninja." and yet, for a glass "house" there sure were a lot of shadows. Sasuke glanced around the bare room. No sign of Sakura.
"Damn! The little b***h tricked me!"
"Ha ha ha ha hahahahahahah!" Maniacal lughter echoed around the room. "You've fallen into my true trap!" Came a voice from behind Sasuke. He whirled around, and there she was; the Sand ninja (whose name he still doesn't know).
"Where's Sakura?"
"Who? Oh," she smirked, "you mean that lovely young lady who was with you earlier? She's safe. In fact, she's right here." From out of the shadows a form began to emerge. Sakura walked over and stood next to the older woman. She wasn't bound, there were no cuts, scrapes, or bruises in her flesh, but her eyes--her beautiful, emerald eyes--had lost their shine. They were dull and lifeless as stones.
"Oh, come now, dear," said the Sand nin, "don't be so shy. Say hello to our guest." With those last few words she gave Sakura a slight shove. Sakura stumbled and fell. To Sasuke, time slowed down. To his mortification, he found he couldn't move to stop her fall.
Crack!
The sound rebounded around the room as Sakura's head connected with the stone floor. Sasuke's legs unfroze and he rushed to her side.
"Sakura! Sakura-chan! Wake up! Please wake up!" The girl's eyelids didn't even flutter. Sasuke turned to the Sand ninja. "What have you done to her?" he snarled.
"Just a simple hypnosis jutsu. Easily undone; though I doubt that would do her any good now!" ANd again the ninja cackled with maniacal laughter.
"Raaaaah!" Sasuke lunged at her and--
--Skrash!
Naruto and Gaara crashed through the glass ceiling.
"Sasuke, stop!" Naruto grabbed his arm.
"Master!" The Sand ninja had sunk to her knees when she saw Gaara.
"Shukakin! I should have known you were behind this! When Naruto told me that Sasuke and Sakura were missing I had hoped--I told you never to go chasing past enemies!"
"I'm sorry, Master Kazekage! I'm sorry!" Shukakin blubbered. Gaara seemed outraged. His face got red and his sand gathered around him and formed into a big, sandy hand. It zoomed toward Shukakin and slammed against a wall of sand that had erected itself around her.
"Waitaminnit," Sasuke muttered, "Gaara, what's going on here?"
"Long story short, Shukakin here seems to be some long lost aunt twice removed, or something, of mine. She has a female versoin of the Sukaku within her, and she likes to think that going after my past enemies will get her on my good side. Don't worry, I'll take care of her...er...problem." In a swirl of sand Gaara and Shukakin had disappeared.
"Um, Sasuke?" he turned. Naruto was kneeling next to Sakura, a finger on her neck, and tears rolling down his face. "I can't find a pulse."
"WHAT?!" Sasuke bellowed.
"I'I'm sorry, Sasuke. I'I think, I think Sakura-chan's deda."
"Nooooo!" Sasuke howled, clutching Sakura's limp, still form to his chest. Tears streamed down his cheeks, dropping onto her pale face. Naruto just stood with his head down; a puddle of tears forming at his feet. As Sasuke wiped his own tears from Sakura's face, a stray tear landed in her partially open mouth. Unexpectedly, she swallowed it. Sasuke started at the sudden movement.
"Uh, Naruto?...Are dead people supposed to be able to swallow?"
"No...why?"
"Because--"
"Mm..."
"Did you say something, Sasuke?"
"No, I didn't." Sakura moved. She nuzzled Sasuke's chest, pushing herself deeper into his embrace.
"Holy--! Naruto!"
"What?"
"Sakura's--she's alive!" Tears of joy started rolling down Sasuke's face.
"Really?! We've gotta get her to Lady Tsunade! Now!"
Naruto and Sasuke leapt through the hole in the ceiling and went to find the Fifth Hokage.
