Jat sat in the library, deep in the pages of her favorite novel, when along came Kevin.
“Whatcha readin’ Jattie??” he joked.
“Oh, nothing.” She put her book aside and looked at Kevin. “What are you doing here, anyways? Following me?” she laughed and kissed his cheek.
“Nah… why would I follow you?” he smiled and kissed her on the lips. “It’s not like I like you or something… ew. Girls have cooties.” He laughed and sat in the chair right next to hers; smiling warmly just as he had smiled the night they had met.
“You realize we’ve been together for almost six months? Wow time flies when you’re having fun, huh, Kevin.” Jat smiled and looked at her book.
“We have! Aw geez!” Kevin laughed and held her hand in his. He knew perfectly well how long they’d been together, and he had loved every minute of it.
“So what are you really doing here?” She kissed him and wrapped her arms around him.
“I came to ask you a small favor…” he asked, pulling away slightly, staring into her eyes.
Jat was a little surprised but replied, “Of course. Anything.”
Kevin smiled and got on one knee. He pulled out a little black box and opened it, exposing a glittering ring. “Jat… will you marry me?”
Jat was speechless. She had a feeling he would do something like that, but never to that extreme. And as she began to cry, she said joyfully, “Yes!! Yes, Kevin! I will marry you!”
He breathed a sigh of relief and put the ring on her finger and got up and hugged her close. “Thank god you agreed! I almost didn’t ask!” he kissed her passionately as he held her.
“I… I don’t know what to say…” Jat said, tears streaming from her eyes.
“No need to speak… you’re acceptance spoke for itself.” Kevin pulled away again, except this time with a big grin on his face. He kissed her and grabbed her hand, pulling her alongside.
“Kevin! Where are we going?” Jat said, laughing.
“You’ll see…” Kevin replied.
They ran all the way across town and to a little bar where all of Kevin and Jat’s friends had gathered. “HURRAH! YEAH!! WAY TO GO!” they all screamed at their arrival.
Jat stopped, dead in her tracks and smiled at Kevin. “You planned this! You knew I’d say yes!” she jumped into his arms and kissed him.
“Of course I did! Geez, Jat! You’d think after 6 months, I’d know you!” he laughed and kissed her back as the crowd cheered.
Jat released her fiancé and kissed him on the cheek one more time before running to her girlfriends who readily asked her a million questions about the ring, the proposal, the wedding, and most of all, what she would wear.
“Oh my GOD!” her friend Jillian screamed, “oh my GOD!!! My best friend is getting married!!!” she hugged her gleefully and began screaming at full volume.
Meanwhile, Kevin and his friends were at the bar, laughing at Kevin and congratulating him on landing a woman. They toasted him and were giving him advice on how to be the “man” in the relationship. And they all laughed when Kevin’s best friend Toby jumped up on the bar and began to do the waltz.
Then one of Kevin’s good friends, Ret, pulled him aside and asked him seriously, “Kevin, I know you love this girl… but how far would you go for her? Marriage is a big step… and I want to make sure you’re ready for it.”
Kevin smiled and said, “Ret, old buddy old pal… I’d go to the ends of the earth for her. I’d die for her… I would do anything to keep her by my side.”
Ret looked at him sternly, “you swear to that? Because that’s’ what marriage is… swearing yourself to her and keeping by her as she keeps by you… through everything.”
Kevin rolled his eyes and responded, “I know, Ret. Do you think I’d ask her if I didn’t?” He patted his shoulder and walked back to the others still partying at the bar. He picked up the freshly poured mug of beer and took a swig, letting it go coldly down his throat.
Jat looked over at her fiancé and smiled. Then her friend Ginger came up to her and said, “Jat, you know… he’s going to want a lot… more… from you after this wedding…”
Jat looked at her and rolled her eyes. “Jin, I know Kevin… he won’t ask for any more or any less after this… I know him… he isn’t like that.” She turned and walked over to a table were her friends were sitting, chatting about old boyfriends and funny date stories, and sat down, trying to get in a laugh. But in the middle of an embarrassing story of when Jillian’s date fell in the toilet, Jat had a voice in her head saying, “Jat… you know Ginger was right… he will ask you for more… you can’t deny that. More effort, more work, more in bed.” She gulped down a lump in her throat and thought about what she had agreed to do.
