Round Twenty-Eight
I smashed my foot
toes-first
into the sidewalk today.
********.
And it took a second
or two
for the rest of me to feel it.
that was the worst part.
My face crashed into itself
and the foot blared
as I squeezed myself hard
and tried not to
swear I heard the bones crack
and nails scrunch into themselves
and my toes explode into blood
and pus and ingrown anger
at cruel cement curbs everywhere
soaking my sandals.
(Looking down and seeing nothing amiss
but a dangling nail
was almost a letdown as I limped away swearing.)
