((I'm too lazy to create seperate journals. this is all I have of the story so far.))
“That’s it. I’m calling him!” I stood at the front of the school next to the stone benches (I guess you could call it a very small courtyard.), furiously staring at my phone. My best friend, Julia, was sitting on a bench playing with her phone. “Who,” she questioned, hardly looking up from her phone. I shoved my phone in front of her and showed her the text message I received three times in the middle of the night before and yet again at that moment.
Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call Call
“Whoa…Someone likes to text.” “I got the same thing three times. And again during class! Thank god Mrs. McD let it slide.” I thought about how much trouble I’d be in with mom if I got my phone taken away. “I’m calling them and telling them to stop.” “Don’t get yourself killed,” she joked as I punched in the number. Someone picked up after the first ring. “Hello?” It was a boy and his voice was soothing and musical. It almost made me forget my anger. Almost. “Are you the one that’s been texting me?” “Are you Cynthia?” He sounded excited and my mind wandered to things he could be excited about. I shivered (I always did have a dirty mind.). “Maybe. But you’ve been texting me and I want to know why.” “You owe me five dollars, Ash!” I heard a grumbling in the background. “Just stop texting me. Bye.” “WAIT! I need to speak with you!” I was not in the mood to talk. “No. I have no idea who you are and I’m still a bit pissed about the texts.” “I’m sorry,” he hastily apologized. “Is Julia with you?” I froze. Why did this strange boy know our names? Why was he harassing me? Especially when he wanted Julia. “I don’t know any Julia. I’m hanging up.” I punched the disconnect button and turned to Julia. She had a worried look on her face. “What’d they say?” “Nothin’. I took care of it.” As soon as I said it, my phone played Unwritten, alerting me that someone wanted me. I took out the phone and saw the boy trying to call back. I selected ignore, but he just called again. I finally answered and a new voice waited for me. His was just as musical but not as smooth. I found myself liking it better. “Listen, angel. We need you. And Julia.” ‘Angel? Why is he calling me angel?’ “I don’t care what you call me! I’m not talking to you.” “LISTEN TO ME,” he roared. It was loud and I pulled the phone away from my ear. Julia hopped up and put her ear near it. “You and Julia are needed in the Old World. John and I are giving you a chance to go willfully.” “We are not going anywhere with you!” I didn’t know what the Old World was, but I assumed these guys were just drunk off their asses. “You’re going whether you want to or not, angel.” “You listen to me, you creepy b*****d!” I didn’t care if a teacher heard me. “Julia and I will not go anywhere with you and if you call me again, I swear I’ll get my dad on your a**. You know who he is? Chief of police. Got anything to say to that?” I waited for him to say “terribly sorry” or “fine” or something. But when he finally spoke, he was laughing. “What? What’s so funny,” I demanded. “The police can’t catch demons and angels. By the way, I just love that plaid hair bow you’re wearing.” My hands flew to the hair bow and I swiftly turned around, almost knocking Julia over. I didn’t see anyone paying close attention to me. “Listen, you drunk b***h. I—” I realized that he hung up on me before I could finish my stream of cursing and angrily closed the phone. I looked at Julia, who was zipping up her jacket. I did too. “Cynthia?” Her voice was a bit shaky. “Yeah?” “Don’t go anywhere alone.” “Only if you promise the same thing.”
The next few days were like hell. I was too scared to go in the hallways when no one else was around. I jumped at the smallest things. Julia told me it was the same for her. I was in my bed three days after the calling incident when I got my next text.
Coming
I didn’t go to sleep that night. I stayed up into the early hours of the morning, a baseball bat in my firm but shaky grip. The next day, Julia and I waited for my dad. Mom was sick, so she didn’t come to work today. She said dad was picking me up, but there was no sign of him yet. Julia could walk home, since it was only five minutes away, and she would have been at that moment. If it didn’t mean I would both be alone for God knows how long. All of the other kids who waited for their parents were already gone. “You can go, Julia,” I told her. She needed to be safe inside. “But what if…” “I’ll be fine. Just go.” I didn’t tell her, but I wanted to be alone. I wanted to give these guys a piece of my mind. And put a face to the texts. I waited another five minutes after Julia left. I was shaking, but it wasn't cold. "Where are you...?” I muttered to myself. I don't know if I was thinking about the boys or dad. A gust of wind blew past me, making me shiver even more. I realized that there was no wind a minute before. Just that single gust. I slowly turned my head to see two boys. One was dressed in pure white. White long sleeve shirt, white jeans, perfect blond hair. He also had white, feathery wings on his back and two smaller ones protruding from the sides of his head. The only thing he needed was a halo to match his golden eyes. It was like he was meant to be the role model god for children. The other was like a negative copy of the first. His hair was long and black. It messily covered is forehead and shoulders. He was wearing a black button up shirt, with pushed up sleeves and the top few buttons were unbuttoned. Black jeans sat baggily on his legs. He had night black wings and, instead of smaller wings, two long, parchment yellow horns were on his head. His crimson eyes popped on his pale skin and his ears were very long and pointed. Again, I found myself liking the second boy better. I watched the boys closely, trying to decide if I should make the first move. I didn’t have to, though, because they made the first move for me. “We’re giving you one last chance, angel. Willingly or forcefully,” the second boy said, stepping forward with a hand outstretched. “How about neither,” I retorted. The golden boy took a step forward to calm down the other. “Now, Ash. I requested that you be polite,” he turned to me. “Please, Cynthia. We need you and Julia. We don’t want to hurt you.” He expected me to go with him while he was threatening me?! “No! Leave us alone!” Before I could do anything else, Ash was in front of me. His bloody eyes burned into me like a forest fire. “We...need...you.” His voice was rough and dangerous. But I didn’t back down. “I…don’t…give a damn.” I had a staring contest with him until he turned to the other boy. “She won’t listen, John. Can I knock her out now?” “What?” “Ash!” John and I had both yelled at once. I took a step backwards and almost ran away. John came up to Ash, putting a calming hand on his forearm, and said, “We’ll just leave her be. We don’t need her to get hurt.” Ash looked from John to me and back. “Fine. But we’ll come back,” he replied. As quickly as they appeared, they were gone. My phone started laying Follow Me (It seemed to be a creepy coincidence.). It was dad telling me he was coming.
That night on my bed, I stared at the TV screen, but I wasn’t really watching whatever was on. Ash and John had me too freaked out. I didn’t want to go to sleep, but I was so tired. ‘I could lie down for a moment. Just rest my eyes...’ I lay down on my soft bed and closed my eyes. I tried to stay awake, but I couldn’t. It was too soft… When I awoke, crimson eyes were staring at me. My first thought was that I was still dreaming. My second was that Ash was taking me away. In my dazed state, I actually liked that idea. He was cute. A little rude to me, but cute. His arms slid under me and he lifted me off the bed. I should’ve screamed, but I was still half asleep. “I told you I’d take you. Willfully or forcefully,” He whispered. “I’m not…” I tried to say more, but something wouldn’t let me. My tongue started to feel a little numb and swollen. My body felt heavy and I wanted nothing more than to go to sleep. “Don’t fight it, angel. The drug will just fight you back.” 'The drug? He drugged me?' “b*****d…” I managed to say. I wasn’t too drugged to be mad. He laughed for a moment and said, “I’ve been called worse.” The rest came in a blur. My room dissolved around me. The glowing TV faded into darkness. I saw only black until I looked at Ash. He was the only bright thing in this new, dark world. His eyes blurred along with the rest of him. “Good night, angel.” He said. I didn’t want him to, but he faded and I lost consciousness.
When I awoke, I was in a completely white room. The curtains, walls and even the bed were completely white. I’d hate to be in there on a sunny day. I sat up and rubbed my hazel eyes, then slid off the huge bed. As soon as my feet touched the floor, the boy I liked and disliked at the same time entered. “Hello, angel.” He smirked at me when I humph!-ed at him. I completely ignored him as I walked toward the door. As my hand reached the doorknob and my fingers touched the cold bronze, he grabbed my hand, swiftly pulling it away. “And where are we going, angel?” I blushed slightly as I pulled my hand away. “We are going nowhere, but I am leaving.” He laughed at me and I blushed harder. “You can’t leave. You haven’t even said hi to your best friend yet.” I turned towards him and glared daggers. “What the hell have you done with Julia,” I whispered, but with rage. He leaned toward me and whispered. “Julia is in her room. I’d watch your tone with me, angel. I can do very bad things.” I looked into his crimson eyes for a moment and knew he was serious. I had to fight the urge to run and hide under the bed. But I did take a step back. “Please take me to Julia,” I said, proud my voice didn’t tremble. He opened the door and walked ahead of me down a long hallway. I silently followed until he stopped and knocked on a black door. Julia opened the door and cursed when the light of the hallway hit her face. “Jesus...” When she looked at me she probably thought I looked like a crazy woman. But I didn’t care. I hugged her tight and yelled, “JULIA! I’m so happy you’re safe!” After a moment she hugged me back and said, “Of course I’m safe. Why wouldn’t I be?” I looked at her and said, “Because of the crazy winged bastards who run this place!” Ash coughed to make sure I knew he was there. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, buddy. I know you’re there.” I glared at him through the corner of my eye and went back to my giggling best friend. “They’re actually pretty nice, babe. At least they were to me.” “And that’s why they put you in a cave?” I gestured to her dark room. “Hehe. No. It just comes with the job.” I looked at her with my perplexed face. “Job? What sort of job did they give you?” I immediately went through a list of jobs they might have given her and mentally shuddered. “Well, if you would start listening and stop cussing I could tell you.” Ash stated. “Come with me.” He was walking down the hallway again, expecting us to follow. Julia was already walking, so I started walking too. I grabbed Julia’s arm and pulled her back. “Julia,” I whispered, hoping Ash wouldn’t hear. “Are you sure we can trust these guys?” Julia was about to say something, but Ash rudely interrupted her. “You have trust issues, don’t you angel?” “Only with winged people who kidnap me and my best friends. And eavesdroppers.” I glared at him and he twitched his long ears while he chuckled. “They are cool, Cyn. Promise.” I sighed and said I’d be okay if she was. She hugged me before we entered a living room with a giant tapestry above the roaring fireplace. It showed two girls and two guys. One pair had black wings, horns and long ears. The other had white wings on their back and two smaller wings on their heads. I couldn't help but think that the boys were Ash and John. And the girls looked a lot like Julia and I. John walked in through another entrance with a smile on his face. "Hello, Cynthia. I'm glad you decided to join us." He stuck a hand out and I shook it to be polite. “I’m afraid we have never been properly introduced. I am John Cigno. And this,” he gestured at Ash, “Is my associate and friend, Ash Volante.” He leaned toward me and said, “Ash can be a bit…brusque. But he is a nice guy once you get to know him.” I nodded and remembered something. “Hey. Are you guys Italian?” “Sì, angela. Che cosa li ha dati via,” Ash answered in a sarcastic tone. I didn’t know what exactly he said, but I know he called me angel…again. “He said, ‘Yes, angel. What gave us away?’ In case you were wondering,” John said sheepishly. “I just thought you were because his last name is Italian for ‘swan’ and yours is Italian for ‘dragon,’” I told Ash. I grinned at my knowledge. I always did love the Italian language. “I bet that’s all you know,” Ash said under his breath. I glared daggers at him. I never liked being underestimated and I usually was. All because of my blonde hair and crazy behavior. So I got a little pissed. “¿Usted piensa que usted es tan elegante, muchacho del demonio? ¡Bien, déjeme le dicen algo! ¡Tardé a tres años de español, honro la biología, honores ingleses, geometría de los honores, y honro la álgebra dos! ¡No me diga que no sé mucho! ¡Puedo batir su asno en un juego del kickball también! ¿Cómo haga usted ahora tiene gusto de mí?” I’d just told him off in perfect (at least I hoped it was perfect.) Spanish. What I said was, “You think you are so smart, demon boy? Well, let me tell you something! I took three years of Spanish, honors biology, honors English, honors geometry, and honors algebra two! Do not tell me I do not know much! I can beat your a** in a game of kickball too! How do you like me now?” Three pairs of eyes stared at me while I took in deep breaths to calm myself. Ash had a bored look in his eyes while Julia’s and John’s were widened in plain shock. “Nice Spanish, but I’m Italian,” Ash commented. I groaned in frustration. “You are such an a**,” I yelled. “Why, thank you,” he replied. I was about to punch him in the face (even though I’m weak and probably wouldn’t even leave a dent.) when John intervened. “Well, this has been eventful!” He blocked me from Ash. “But we really must get to the important part. Right, Ash?” “If the angel is done reviewing her academics,” Ash muttered. I ignored his comment and focused on John. Obviously he was gonna tell me why Julia and I were here. Julia took my hand and said, “You’ll want to sit down.” She led me to a couch and we sat down while John and Ash were walking toward the fireplace. John said, “We’ve already explained the situation to Julia, but we will explain it again for your benefit, Cynthia.” He cleared his throat and began the story. “A long time ago, there were four companions. Two girls and two boys. As you can see in the tapestry, two were angels and two were demons. They kept the world in complete balance, one pair constructing the yin, or darkness, of the world, and the other constructing the yang, or lightness, of the world. “All four were great and kind. Even though two were demons, they were still on the side of good, keeping a balance of the yin with the yang. “Each companion held a part of the world in their hearts. The only way to obtain the piece they had was to kill or fatally wound them and the only people who could kill them were each other.” John grew somber and Ash stepped in. “The demon boy had always been arrogant and, after time passed, he grew even more so. He started to think he could handle the world by himself. He didn’t think he needed the others. So, he thought up a plan to get rid of them. “One by one, in the middle of the night, he murdered his companions and stole their pieces. He gave no mercy and killed swiftly. When he had every piece he merged them together and created a powerful orb of yin and yang. He felt all powerful with the orb, but he could not merge it with himself, because it still had one of the other’s essence. He had not completely killed the girl angel. “She was able to sneak up on him and break the orb into pieces. Before he could kill her, she used wind to take a yin piece and a yang piece and hide it in the world. He killed the angel and gathered up the pieces he did have. He still had most of the orb, so he was still very powerful.” John continued by himself. “Ash and I have gathered the two pieces and taken on our roles as the demon and angel boys. You are the demon and angel girls.” “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up a minute, mister halo,” I said. “How, may I ask, are we demon and angel girls? We have lived completely normal lives being completely normal teenage girls until about a week ago when you two started phone stalking me!” John looked at me apologetically and Ash had an angry look (does he have another emotion besides sarcasm and anger?). “Neither of us asked to be the demon and angel boys,” Ash said. “But we took the responsibility. Now. Will you?” I looked at Ash and John with an apologetic face. “I’m sorry. But I still think I’m drugged with something and dreaming.” I turned around and saw Julia silently pleading with her eyes. “I’m sorry, Julia. But this isn’t my kind of thing.” Before I knew it, Ash grabbed my elbow from behind and was racing toward the window. “Let me go,” I screamed. Until he jumped out. “DON’T LET ME GO!” I felt the wind buffeting my face as he flew with my elbow in his hand. I kept a tight grip on the hand keeping me from a messy death. We didn’t actually fly long, but it felt like forever because of the way he kept glaring at me. We touched down in the middle of an abandoned town. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself. Then, I started yelling. “What the hell? Where did you take me?!” He gave me one of the scariest looks and pointed down the now only almost-abandoned street. A little boy was running down the street, holding something small in his hands. After him were a group of bigger boys, who seemed to be after whatever the small boy had. Soon, the boys caught up and started beating on him relentlessly. I covered my mouth in shock. After a few fierce kicks, one of the older boys held something up. A small piece of bread. He and the other boys ran away, cheering and leaving behind the small body. Ash walked toward him and put a hand on his neck. “He’s dead,” he solemnly stated. I almost cried. “It was just a little piece of bread! Why did they kill him over it?” “Because that’s how they survive under a demon’s rule. Giomar takes whatever money he can get and causes torture to anyone and everyone he can meet. This is why we need you and Julia. We need all four to defeat Giomar. Julia is helping us. Will you?” I looked at Ash and saw then the little body on the ground. “Ok. What do I have to do?” “Come back with me.” “Okay.” Ash quickly slid one hand on the small of my back and the other under my legs, lifting me up bridal style. He quickly took off, heading back towards the castle, and I tried forgot about the act of murder over bread I just saw.
It felt like we arrived back at the castle in a matter of minutes, though it was probably longer. When we came back in through the window, Julia and John both stood up. “Ash! Where did you take her?” Ash set me down and said, “It doesn’t matter, John. She’s agreed to help us and that is what we needed.” Julia came over to me and helped me stand up (I was a bit weak-kneed about the murder I just saw and flying didn’t help much.). John sighed. Apparently he was used to Ash’s rude ways. “Well, we can transform you tomorrow. You’re probably tired.” I looked up quickly when he said “Transform.” “Excuse me? Transform?” “Yes, angel. You need your wings, you know.” Ash looked at me like I was an idiot. I scoffed at him and turned to Julia. “You gonna be okay in your room? It’s pretty dark in there.” She laughed at me. “Yeah…Well, actually…I have an idea.” I could practically see the gears in her head turning and I got curious. “What,” I asked. “Hey, guys,” Julia called. “Would you mind doing something for us?” The guys turned. Ash looked annoyed, but John looked eager. “What do you need, Julia?” “Well, before we go to bed, can you guys move some stuff? Like, move some of my things into Cynthia’s room? And some of Cynthia’s things into my room?” I looked at her, realizing what she was doing. Before Ash could reject, John eagerly accepted.
I little later, I was sitting in my room watching Ash easily move a large table from a room on one end of the hall to the other. Apparently along with wings, you also got superman strength. It ended up we had the boys switch most all the furniture in the rooms. The dark furniture in my room made it a little less blinding and the white furniture in Julia’s room made it less dark. The good thing is all the furniture was completely alike, other than color. Neither of us gained or lost anything. We traded tables, curtains, chairs, bed spread, and some pillows. Our rooms ended up being inverted copies of each other. Julia felt a bit bad about making the boys move all the furniture, but John was obviously happy to do it and I thought Ash deserved to do a little work. The boys got the work done fast and Julia and I went to spend our first night (well, actually my first night ‘cause she got here a day before me.) in “The Old World.”
