The Dream
Blackness, the kind one sees as they gaze off into the abyss of nonexistence; or that's what she saw when she opened her eyes. Where was she? She pressed her hands to her face and then on the rest of her body, she was intact, sighing she reached to her side and felt the cool ground, hastily touching the ground around her a sudden wave of trepidation swept over her, he wasn't there. Where was he? Where could he be? What had happen? She leaped to her feet, "Where are you?" She called out in a horse voice. Nothing... "Where are you?" She cried out louder, again nothing. She began to walk stretching her arms out into the obscureness, scanning the darkness for a sign of him. " I can't find you!" she called out as she dropped to her knees, hot tears welled up in her eyes, she couldn't remember anything of how she had ended up in this void, how they had been separated. Hanging her head as a tear slid down her cheek she heard something in the distance. Her head shot up in the direction of the sound, deep down inside she knew it was him. She was on her feet again but this time she was running, running to the sound "I hear you.." she called out to the sound. The closer she got to the sound the louder it became, the more certain she was it was him. "I hear you, I'm coming..." In the distance a low light like a candle became visible; it drew her in like a moth to a flame. With each step the light grew brighter, she began to hear voices. Soon she was so close to the light that it began to hurt her eyes. She hesitated to go into it, "I'm here.." his voice called out to her, she clinched her eyes closed and charged into the light.
"Father?" He turned his head and gazed up into big worried hazel eyes, sighing he turned his head and stared at the door. "Father its me, your daughter, its Sammy.." "Let him rest..." A male voice answered from behind her. "All he does is just stare at that door, I'm afraid we are losing him." she began to lightly sob as she turned and buried her face into her brother's chest . "If its his time, there is nothing we can do." "I know Travis, but i wish he didn't look like he's suffering,it seems like he is waiting for something, he is in pain and there is nothing we can do." she said as sat down next to her father pulling his covers up to his chest and brushing his hair to the side. Suddenly he sat up his eyes fixed on the door, his lips began to move, no sound escaped his lips at first, "She's here..." he said in a low whisper. "What did you say Father?" Sammy asked. "She's here..." he said a bit clearer. "No Dad," Travis responded "Mom isn't here, the Doctors said it would be too much for her to bare to be here." "NOOooo..." he said in a much louder and clearer voice, "SHE...SHE IS HERE..." Sammy and Travis looked at each a worried look transfixed on their faces. She had finally found him, she was standing at the foot of his bed, he was sitting up staring at her in disbelief, his eyes began to tear up as she smiled at him. Time had gotten a hold of him his boyish face was aged by a lifetime of experiences, his once vibrant hazel eyes were darker in his old age and his once dark hair was now the color of snow. His lips began to curl up into a smile, she always loved it when he smiles, it gave her a feeling of warmness. "I'm here for you, like i promised..." she said as she walked to the side of his bed, he followed her with his head and his eyes. He smiled big, "Yes, you did keep your promise." "Father, who are you talking to?" Sammy inquired. He ignored his daughter's question and transfixed his eyes on her as she was sitting on the bed next to him. "Do you remember?" He stared at her blankly, her eyes began to tear up "You forgot, you don't remember..." She took his face in her hands and stared into his eyes "We used to lay in the meadow counting the bunnies, watching the clouds roll by. You used to chase me in the woods, tackling me when you caught me, kissing me as we rolled around on the ground" She said before she pressed her lips against his, their eyes closed with tears streaming down their cheeks. When he opened his eyes he was looking to hers, bright sunlight danced across their skin as the clouds above them moved. Her eyes were golden in the light and her fair skin and dark brown hair were almost angelic as she laid against the green grass; he began to blush. She smiles and rolled to her side propping her head into her hand, leaning in and softly kissing his forehead. His wrinkles were gone, his eyes were bright hazel again and his smile vibrant. He rolled to his side facing her and propped his head in his hand as well. "Look Bunnies!" She said with excitement pointing in the direction behind him, he turned his head and saw nothing "Hey!!" he shouted when he turned his head and saw her a few feet away standing with a cheesy smile that beckoned him to chase her. He jumped to his feet and charged after her as she took off towards the woods, their laughter loud. With ever step he took he gained on her until he was right behind her, stretching out his arms he lunged forward wrapping his arms around her holding her tightly as the fell onto the ground laughing as they rolled to a stop with him laying on top of her. They gazed into each others' eyes and pressed their lips against the others, he was happy. When they opened their eyes they were standing in an overcast field, "Do you remember....do you remember how we were separated...torn away from each other?" He looked at her with a clueless expression, she pointed out to the field "watch..." He turned his head in the direction of her finger and gasped in disbelief; they were laying in the field only a few feet from where they stood. He was talking to her and she was laughing. She must be mistaken, it looked almost identical to the last scene she had shown him. Suddenly she shot up and looked in their direction with a horrified look on her face, the other him sat up and looked in the same direction before he quickly jumped in front of her. He turned and looked in the direction they were facing, four grim looking men were headed in their direction. He looked over at her as she stood watching the other them cling to each other her head lowed and tears beginning to flood her eyes. He recognized them as servants of his family, he didn't care for them as they were a violent pack of men, the kind who took things a little to far. "Well well well...what have we here?" the leader of the group smirked "Go away " He barked at them. The lead man smirked " Now you know we can't do that, you know you aren't suppose to leave your family's grounds, and you know you aren't suppose to be with her." he snapped as glared at her. "There is nothing you can do about it...go away...I'll return home when i am ready to do so..." "Fraid not" the lead man replied. "I'm on direct orders to drag you home myself." "I'm not leaving until I take her home" he snapped back as he gripped her arm tightly. "No, I am to bring you home now, i'll have her escorted home." the lead man said with a grin "Over my dead body..." he yelled as he death gripped her. The lead man turn and looked at one of the men and then the both charged at him taking hold of his arms and pinning him to the ground. "Don't make this anymore difficult than it has to be..." the lead man laughed. "Please just do as they say" she whimpered. He hesitantly nodded his head and the pulled him to his feet and began to lead him away. "I'll be fine" she managed to choke out as he turned back looking at her standing between the two men. He kept looking till they were no longer visible. And now she was a lone in the field with the two men, they were walking around her sizing her up. He turned and looked at her, tears were streaming down her cheeks, he looked back to the field. "I can make it home on my own" she said softly "Home? who said you were going home?" one of the men answered her. A realization came over her face, she hung her head as the men began to laugh, she turned her body from them and darted off towards the woods. realizing what was going on the men chased after her, "STOP HER" one of the men shouted. A gun was drawn from a holster, a shot fired, she dropped to her knees and began to crawl another shot fired and she dropped on the ground face first blacking out. Still standing in the field watching the past he began to sob, he turned to her "They told me you were fine, but i knew they were lying i couldn't feel you..." "It wasn't your fault, I know you blamed yourself..." she said not looking at him but at the men as they closed in on her wounded body. He watched as the men picked her up and dragged her like a rag doll, the took her to the nearest road and left her there for someone to find, she was barely alive, but fighting for every breath. A couple of hours passed and a young boy came down the road; he recognized the boy it was his younger brother on his way home from market. When his brother saw her laying there he rushed over to her, she turned her head and looked up at him, she could tell that he was scared and unsure of what to do. She reached out to him and he took her hand, "It's going to be okay." she tried to say with a smile her breathing began to get harder. "Tell your brother that I love him, its not his fault, and that I will come back for him." tears flooded both their eyes, he nodded his head. She turned her head and looked up into the sky, her breathing stopped and her body became stoic. Tears rushing down his face he reached around her neck and pulled off her necklace, stuffed it into his pocket and ran home. "NO MORE...NO MORE...PLEASE STOP...I BEG YOU!!" he sob hard as he turned to her. "I died in side when i found out" "You blamed yourself" she answered "But it wasn't you fault." She took his hand and smiled "Are you ready?" He nodded as he looked at her squeezing her hand. He he turned and looked ahead of them they were standing at the foot of his bed, his daughter by his sided shaking him, his son in the corner his hand covering his mouth eyes beginning to water. "Father, please don't go!" Sammy begged He began to step forward and she gripped his hand tightly "Its time" she said softly "I'm just going to say goodbye." He walked over to to Sammy and kissed her forehead a tear rolling down his cheek, he turned to Travis and hugged him tightly before rejoining her at the foot of his bed. "I'm ready" he said calmly as he smiled at her, she smiled back and the turned and walked out the door. Cries could be heard behind them as his physical body breathed its last breath, they walked on into the bright light and what awaited beyond it.
