Siren. A game worth killing. |

Siren. A game so bad, it'll make you want to bash your head in on your PS2 controller out of sheer frustration. I bought this game a few days ago, hoping to have a nice scare (like in the Silent Hill, or Fatal Frame series.) But no. All I got was a tacky game that caused me to go back to the store, and trade it in for an older game with less value (Xenosaga, if you must know.)
Anyways, here are my reasons for bashing this game.
I put it into my PS2, to get a rather cool, somewhat freaky Intro scene. My heart sank as I saw the actual game graphics. The people's faces were almost flat, and their noses were border-lining on small, flat rectangles, that looked like they had been punched a few to many times. Then came the voice acting. Im sorry, but MOST Japanese or Chinese people DO NOT have British Accents. Unlike this game, which made it seem almost all Japanese have thick, british voices.
Then came the gameplay. After running from Mr.Crazy Head Cop, I found some keys on a table in a shed (Which had a sliding door that blended perfectly with the rest of the shed. Very hard to find.) So, I pressed Triangle to pick up the keys. Then I ran to the car. This is what killed the game for me.
"You cannot see the key hole. Turn on your flashlight" *Turns on flashlight and puts the key into the door, unlocking it* (Alerting the cop) "Press triangle to open the door" *Presses Triangle to get in, while the cop madly shoots at me. Sits in the car for a few moments, waiting* "Press Triangle, and scroll down the list to start the car"
Now, I know in MOST games, the character has the brains that when he unlocks a door, he wants to get through. Then, when you get into a car, you usually START it. Not sit there while a cop shoots you in the face through the car window. So anyways, after making it through that horrible ordeal, I made it to the next area, which involved my character getting shot, and falling off a cliff, anyways.
You wake up in the (evil) blood red water, get to shore, and some girl drops the entire story on you, telling you that monsters infest the Island, and the red water has given you "Sightjack" which lets you see through other people's eyes. The character is like "Okay." Thats a little too accepting. What? No "Your lying", "What are you talking about?!" or "Oh No!". If I got shot, survived, woke up in water (Which is now all blood) swam to shore, had a girl tell me Zombies are out to get me, and I have Psychic Powers, Id think that I was on some sort of drug, or I'd swim back out into the blood water and try to find another place to go, with less zombies, and no crazy girls.
Then came what destroyed the game for me entirely. The Darkness. Theres "Oh no, its so dark and foggy. Monsters could be hiding in the shadows, and can jump out at me anytime" scary, or theres Siren, which takes the "Its so dark and foggy, I dont know if Im spending 10 minutes walking down this dark alley, which could end in a dead end" approach. Its fear of wasting time doing something thats pointless, only to walk back (for another 10 minutes) and try to find another route. And your flashlight, which is supposed to light your way, barely rivals a dying candle, and causes every undead in the entire area to bear down on you, like you were a giant sign reading "Eat at Joe's"
Theres also the combat system, with the gun. You can only shoot and lock onto a guy if theyre a little more than a few feet infront of you. Any further back, and your precious bullets go flying in random directions. Well, I dont know what some people were taught, but I've come to know that guns are used to kill stuff from a distance. Not when theyre almost on top of you. If the game was like this, they should have given me a knife. At least knives dont run out of ammo.
Anyways, thats been my game rant of the day. I suggest only buying this game if you're really dedicated to the horror Genre, and the game doesnt cost more than $20.
(Yes, I know I havent posted much... To much garbage turned me off of Gaia) =P
