I think this blog should be all about recommendations for my darling friends, or anyone who reads my blogs.
Movies:1) L'Auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) Plot Outline: A straight laced French student moves into an apartment in Barcelona with a cast of six other characters from all over Europe. Together, they speak the international language of love and friendship. Plot Synopsis: As part of a job that he is promised, Xavier, an economics student in his twenties, signs on to a European exchange program in order to gain working knowledge of the Spanish language. Promising that they'll remain close, he says farewell to his loving girlfriend, then heads to Barcelona. Following his arrival, Xavier is soon thrust into a cultural melting pot when he moves into an apartment full of international students. An Italian, an English girl, a boy from Denmark, a young girl from Belgium, a German and a girl from Tarragona all join him in a series of adventures that serve as an initiation to life. [My thoughts: Amazing! This ^ does no justice for the movie. It is such a good movie. Just watch it.]2)Russian Dolls (The sequel to The Spanish Apartment) Plot Outline: Five years after their summer together in Barcelona, Xavier, William, Wendy, Martine and Isabelle reunite. Plot Synopsis: Xavier is now thirty. No longer a student, he is not yet a well-balanced, fullfiiled adult either. His career is unsatisfying : far from being the renowned novelist he aimed to be he must be content with little jobs such as reporter or ghost writer. His greatest "achievement" in "literature" is his collaboration to the script of a corny TV soap ! His sentimental life is not much better, rhythmed by one night stands and unfinished romances. It looks as if when he seduces a woman beautiful outside and inside such as Kassia or Wendy he can't keep them. Will he ever bring his life into focus? [My thoughts: Another amazing movie. The actors/actresses are great! Another movie you just have to watch!]3)The Beat That My Heart Skipped Plot Outline: Should Tom make like his thuggish father or pursue his dream of becoming a pianist? Plot Synopsis: Twenty-eight-year-old Tom leads a life that might be termed as criminal. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of his father, who made his money from dirty, and sometimes brutal, real estate deals. Tom is a pretty hard-boiled guy but also strangely considerate as far as his father is concerned. Somehow he appears to have arrived at a critical juncture in his life when a chance encounter prompts him to take up the piano and become a concert pianist, like his mother. He senses that this might be his final opportunity to take back his life. His piano teacher is a Chinese piano virtuoso who has recently come to live in France. She doesn't speak a lick of French so music becomes the only language they have in common. Before long, Jacques' bid to be a better person means that he begins to yearn for true love. But, when he finally has the chance of winning his best friend's wife, his passion only succeeds in scaring her. And then, one day, his dubious past comes to light... [My thoughts: This movie is probably my favorite of the bunch. The actor in this (who is in all of them; Romain Duris*) is amazing. He conveys a nervous energy and intensity that is frightening when unleashed. WATCH IT!]Go BUY them. HOLD them. LOVE them. The Spanish Apartment Russian Dolls The Beat That My Heart Skipped
