Redemption Part 9
It was dead silent. Suddenly there was a noise behind them. They turned around to see a shadowy figure bent down picking Joyce up from the ground. “Hey let go of her!” yelled Ron. The group moved to attack the figure, but everything they swung at him he only dodged with Joyce in his arms. He yelled for them to listen to what he said, “Wait! Stop! Just listen to me for one minute!” They stopped to hear what he had to say, but the still had their weapons at the ready. He carried on, “The girl is injured, I know how to make her better, but I will have to take her to my cabin to heal her.” Everyone was silent, suddenly Liz moved forward in haste, “Want me to take him out?!” Shade stopped her movement by holding his arm out to the side in front of her. He said nothing to her but directed his question to the dark figure, “Who are you…?” He quietly demanded,
“My name is Kawl, I live here in the canyon, I saw what happened back there,” he grinned, “So you are Fallens…” Shade’s temper was shorted by the man’s knowledge of their true being. He turned his head to Ron and glared at him intensely. Chan interrupted before Shade could say anything, “So! Uhh… you LIVE in the canyon?”
“Yes, not far from here.”
“Listen you, if--” Shade was quickly interrupted by Kawl, “All I want to do is be sure that the girl gets well, that is all.” Shade was silent for a few seconds with slight anger on his face, “How do we know we can trust you…?” he asked the dark figure named Kawl. Kawl had already put Joyce back on the ground, he raised his arms outward and said “Who else do you see here in the canyon that you can trust? I’m the only one who lives here.”
“Hrnph,” Shade snorted, “Fine, but WE carry her. You lead the way.” Kawl smirked and said “It’s settled then.” Nobody but Chan noticed his strange grin but she decided to shrug it off for a while and not worry about it until he could seem to be a real threat.

Liz carried Joyce as Kawl led the way through the canyon over large rocks and small caves. Once again Ron and Chan stayed in the back and complained cutely about the cold together, “W-w-why is it s-s-s-s-so cold?? I th-thought c-canyons were supposed to be w-w-warm!” exclaimed Chan. Ron agreed. They huddled together like little children and shivered with chattering teeth. “I’m so cold my hair might fall off!” Ron whined. Chan answered back with, “No! Ron has pretty hair!! It CAN’T fall off! When are we getting there?!”
“It’s not much further,” Kawl answered back from the front of the group, walking with Shade. Shade rolled his eyes at the whimpering two and asked Kawl if he actually did live in the canyon. “Yes, I have lived here many years. Although, I’m afraid to say, I’ve never been out of the canyon since I first made my cabin.”
“IT’S COLD!” yelled Chan from the back with both her and Ron clinging to each other.
“SHUT UP BACK THERE!” Shade yelled back.

It was quiet for a while as they all walked. Chan and Ron were a reasonable distance for the rest of the group to not hear them. “You’re going to think I’m crazy, but I don’t think I trust this Kawl,” said Chan in an uncertain manner. Ron looked at her, bent over slightly holding the straps of his back pack with his thumbs. He laughed a little, “Haha, how come?”
“I don’t know… there’s something about him…”
“Heh… I guess…”
“Well think, if he were able to get behind us without us realizing where he was in the first place, then I don’t want to know what he is capable of. He even fooled Shade’s presence detecting. We were in completely the wrong direction. Plus, he was able to dodge our attacks pretty well back there. I don’t know, maybe I’m just going crazy.” Ron smiled and reassured her, “I think we’ll be okay, but just to make sure we’ll keep our guard up. Haha, you’re so cute when you’re paranoid.” He chuckled a bit out loud. Chan found it all but amusing. She pouted and then whacked him swiftly in the head.

They finally arrived to a small cabin made out of logs. When they entered they noticed a lot of animal fir on the floor for rugs and animal heads placed on the wall. The place was humble and small. A fire place and the far wall heated he little hut. It lit the room with a orange glow that made everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. Sean took Joyce from Liz and gently placed her in a small bed. He smiled lightly and said “There we go.”

He loved Joyce. More than anything. Not as a sister, and not as a friend. He held deep feelings for her that he could never explain in any form of words except one. He could never tell her though. He saw how Trent and she got along, and knew he could never break that bond. The fact annoyed him a bit, but he couldn’t blame Trent. His brother. He understood all too well the feelings that Trent harvested for Joyce. He understood those feelings, and he respected them. He didn’t know if Trent ever knew what he felt for Joyce. He always hoped, that if Trent were ever to find out what his true feelings were, that they would not have to fight over her. Shade could never turn his back on his twin brother. He would do anything for Trent. He would even give his own life. He respected him so much that it was agonizing. Truthfully, deep down, he was glad that Ron had saved Joyce. Shade thought he would have most likely done the same thing, if only to see her and Trent smile again. If Joyce were there, then Trent would never be truly unhappy. One of the only things that Shade lived for was for his brother to be happy. To have love. To be free. Joyce was his freedom. And Trent’s happiness was Sean’s happiness, although it may not have ever showed.

He sat on the bed beside Joyce and wondered what it would really be like if he and she was together. Just once. Without the worries of other people. It hurt him deep inside, knowing that he could not have her, and that she was rightfully to be with Trent. “Uh… hey what’s up with Sean? He looks like he just swallowed a slug,” said Ron blatantly. Chan glared at him through the corner of her eye, “Huh… men know nothing… can’t you see??” she said.
“… no?...” Ron answered with a bit of a ditzy look about him. This made Chan chuckle a bit, “Haha, you’ll learn when you’re older young grasshopper,” and patted him playfully on the head.
“Hey, I’m three whole months older than you!” he pouted. Chan laughed playfully again, but soon lost her playful emotion. Her suspicions arose again.

Shade smiled gently, brushed a lock of Joyce’s hair from her face and petted her head, “We’ll find him, Joyce. Don’t worry…” It was unusual for him to act this way. Chan and Ron stared at him with dunce looks on their faces while Liz poked at and analyzed Kawl’s weaponry cabinet. Chan looked down at the bear rug on the floor and thought of how much bears frightened her. It was a phobia of hers that she had her whole life. She didn’t know why she was afraid of them, but they looked demonic to her. Then she was struck with an epiphany. There were no bears in the canyon, or any animals for a fact. There was no wood for two hundred miles. Especially not enough to make the hut with only one man going back and forth, for several days getting only one log at a time. And his weapons that he owned could not be made by regular human hands. Nor could a man like him afford them. She quickly told her observations to Ron. They twisted their heads from side to side quickly as Ron said “What?!?” Suddenly they were surrounded by dark ninja like fighters. They were grabbed harshly by the arms. Not even Shade was fast enough to escape. Chan managed to take her arm away from them but they still held on tight to her, “Let me go you b*st*rds!!” She kicked at them and tried to reach for her throwing stars but her free arm was grabbed. The cabin was in a blaze because one of the Fallens had grabbed a stick of fire but dropped it when they were grabbed. Chan struggled to get out of their grip, “Let go of me! I told you to let go you jerk!” Suddenly she felt an impact on her head and her vision blurred in and out. As her vision faded she witnessed her friends kicking and fighting for their lives amongst the orange blaze. She hoped that maybe they would escape. That they could get out of there. She hoped they would leave her to be captured and that they would escape unharmed. Then… darkness.
