And now for something completely different...
...or as different as a damned blog can be, anyway. It started out as a project, it devolved into a chronicling of my misanthropy, rage, and occasional fits of glee. It sounds good, though, and might even make you laugh.
Now I stand politically corrected
Something I've noticed on Gaia is that the "outsider" portions of society pride themselves on not being told how to dress and being accepting of difference.

Something else I've noticed on Gaia is that this is a big crock of s**t.

You'd like to think that people who got picked on, mistreated or shunned would learn from other people's mistakes and choose to, as my journalism professor said, "not be that guy." Sadly, this is not the case, and there follows an incredibly picky, precise set of rules you have to follow unless you want to deal with some frothing 15-year-old spamming your profile page. You can't dress well at all without being shallow or "obeying society's rules" or-- if you're a girl-- submitting to the role of a sex doll. Admit to going outside in a shirt that's the proper size and jeans that were made in the last three years, and people will call you a weak-brained whore. You can't enjoy athletics, because if you do you can't be smart. People will indeed imply you're mentally behind them because you like playing pick-up basketball after class. God help you if you want something normal for a career-- or, again for the ladies, who can't catch a break, want to raise a family-- because you're brainwashed and people will trash your dreams with gusto. Yes, there are slutty girls in the world who live entirely for other people's approval. There are guys who would only use a book to wedge under their soccer goal so it stays put. There are even people with no personal ambitions who will end up doing whatever they're told to do. But that's not everyone. That's not even most people, I'd hazard a guess. Good job on being as "omg narrow-minded" as the kids you hate so much.

Possibly the only thing that could make the above and sadder and funnier is that really, all the lists of approved clothing, aspirations, habits, activities and attitudes are still determined by society at large. Like it or not, defining what's good as "everything most people don't like," or "the opposite of what's popular" is still defining your value system externally. Personally, I prefer the, "if it's not mine, leave it the hell alone*" line of thought, but I suppose that's half the reason so many people call me brainwashed or a fascist for deleting their flame posts. Think it over, no?

*Unless of course it can be mined for the sake of entertainment and comedy. Then it gets 5 minutes at center stage because let's face it, everyone laughs, and people on the whole provide a lot of amusement.

I remember while waiting in line for badge pick-up one year at AX, I got into a conversation with one of the people around me. He was ranting about something or other, but there is one line of his I won't forget.

"Yeah, he wants to be different, while all the other people want to be different, so they all end up looking the same." He stressed an emphasis on different as well.

Anyways, your rant just reminded me of that. domokun

Lawl. Double points for someone saying that at a con, which is pretty much the worst of the "different" drones. Seriously, though, I just wonder if these people ever stop and think about the stuff they say...and realize they sound exactly like, if not even worse than, the people they're always saying "repress" them and waste time "conforming."

Probably the worst I've encountered was a girl in a class of mine who straight looked down on everyone who bothered to get dressed in the morning, like if you pulled on a shirt and some pants you were automatically stoooopid. She had a big chip on her shoulder about "society" and what she thought it expected of her, like something other than PJs would make her into a blow-up doll or something; the rest of us were presumed to get dressed because Da Machine was making us, not because it was a 10:00 class, which even I would feel sheepish attending in my PJs. WTFHAX. burning_eyes

gonk I'm fifteen!

I think its all about the individuals, not necessarily the whole group, but I get where you're going. Gaia's users are getting more corrupted as a new member signs up!

I'd hate it if people called me facist as well as brainwashed.

Well, the dude was a large black guy ranting about emo people or something. The people that try to be different, whatever they associate themselves with. I think that counts for triple points right there.

I don't think most people at my school have the intelligence quotient to form the opinion about dressing to fit society's standards. Or about most other things, really. ._.; So no funny stories from me.

@krn: That's what I like about Gaia-- now matter what I'm playing "pick an age, pick any age" with, there's always an exception. Yay for having good apples in with the bushel of rotten ones! 4laugh

@Druki: OMGLAWL. Triple points indeed. I'm picturing Chef ranting now, and that is a) funny if I keep it to "cartoon chef," and b) funnier but also more scary if I picture Real Chef doing it, because he would say stuff like that, but I'm pretty sure he'd fall asleep mid-rant because he's narcoleptic. gonk
