	I read the news today, oh boy.
	I read the news today, oh boy.


I have this habit of logging on at work and popping open a local news website. Just a way to kep up to date on what's going on, since I dn't watch TV news. Amidst the usual fluff and crap in the news (do I really care if an off duty cop crashed his car?) I see about three news pieces all related. They don't look related at first glance, they're about completely different subjects. We've got a church that is burying aborted fetuses. We've got public squabbling over a book which is sparking the drive for a national "no name-calling" week. A few other little incidents. There's one common thread lying underneath it all. It's hate. Bigotry. Racism. Bullshit so thick, people can't seem to see it. The church is burying fetuses because "they deserve a christian burial". So, the doctor is pissed that they're doing this without consent of the families. The church responds by saying "Who cares if this bothers the families, they aborted it." It just goes on. So, we've got the church amking decisions about where your dead child goes. We've got an abortion doctor who doesn't want the church involved in his buisness. (wonder why.. he has to wear a bulletproof jacket to work.) We've got people trampling all over each other, all over each others rights, feelings and lives because of theri opinions. I'm not even going to bother saying "beliefs" because what is belief if not more than a religous opinion. Same issue with the "no name-calling" week. Now, how can that be a bad thing? Not calling people names. Sounds fine to me. We've (once again) got religous groups in an uproar, because the book this movement is based on was written by a gay man, and features a gay boy. "If we don't agree with homosexuality, we get called bad names like bigot and homophobe." Yeah, you do, because you are. I'm an a***e. Deal with it. That's missing the entire point. You wouldn't get called anything if you'd just keep your goddamned mouths shut. Listen up, jackasses. If you've got strong religous beliefs, more power to ya. Keep on rocking that religous boat. Doesn't bother me in the least. If you're gay, keep on rocking that carnival cruiseline. More power to ya. However, if you're going to impose your opinions on somone who doesn't share them, then you're no longer being religous, or being an evangelist. You're being a **** pk. So, little tommy is gay, and your book says (maybe) that being gay is wrong. Well, looks like tommy didn't read your book. Too bad for him. Don't shove that book down his throat. Don't impose your opinions on his choice. Your book doesn't apply to everyone, no matter how much you believe it does. This goes for any book, any religion. Not everyone is going to subscribe to it. Get over it, and keep rocking your little world. They'll keep rocking theirs, and we'll leave each other the ***** alone for once, okay? I've read the bible. It says, basically: "You do these select things, you're going to hell." That's fine. It doesn't say; "Cram thy beliefs up thy neighbors rectum until the love of jaysus pours out of their eyes, and they stop loving the ck." Sorry, it doesn't. I double-checked. I also highly doubt jesus would have gone hightailing it up main street, screaming like a little girl and calling all homosexuals "unclean". But hey, maybe Jesus could be a real dk on bad wine. Seemed like a pretty level-headed guy to me. Had some daddy issues, though. (Probably didn't hug him enough.) So, long story.. well.. shorter, you abort a baby, that's your choice. You're gay, it's your choice. Lesbian? Your choice. a*e? (oh yeah) your choice. See, the problem is choice. Why not just choose to keep your goddamned mouth shut, and maybe we'll all get along. I can hear the jackass in the back; "Oh yeah? What about you Mr. smarty-pants? Aren't you telling people what to do?" Yes, I am. I am calling my judgements, and making my opinions known. Hell, I'm even applying them to others. I'm doing everything that I say not to. Only difference is, I'm not using it to beat down anyone. I'm an a*e, granted, but at least I'm an a*e who knows that people should just get along with each other, and stop beating everyone to death with opinions. I think jesus was like that. (not claiming to be like jesus, stop now.) Sure, he'd get pissed and throw a few tables around, but overall.. Wasn't he just talking about acceptance, and learning how to get over your st, and let people live? Smart guy. 	Surroundings shape people as do the traditions of the ages. Religions survive by preserving older mind-sets. For a very long time, marriage was strictly between man and woman, and it was not done any other way. (This is not true, of course, because being gay is not a new choice, but it was hidden a lot more in the past than it is now.) From where the chrich stands, that's the norm. Anything outside of those traditions will be treated poorly simply because its new, and it's shaking some of the religious foundation. Same goes for abartions and clonings and whatever else is being discovered. Hell, some chruches still don't accept that dinosaurs lived before people because until dinosaur bones were found (within the last 500 years) and Darwin came up with his ideas on evolution, the Church was in the right and they don't want to admit that they were/are wrong. No one is saying that's right, but we have to learn to live with that. People need to accept that some doctirines are going to look really different and simply leave it at that. Jumping all over the church and saying that they are all wrong is just as ignorant as having the church do it to you. Understanding comes when both sides are allowed to express themselves and come up with a solution. An example of such would be that anyone who goes to the church (or is of any religion) must follow the rules of that religion or no longer be part of it. Just like the church wants to stick its nose where it doesn't belong, so do the members want too much. If your religions says NO to abortion, why the bloody hell are you complaining that they excommunicate you for having one? That's where a lot of the trouble lies as well. 	Jeremiah, you say that we must learn acceptance, and I fully agree. The issue I'm having is that the church won't let things stay within the confines of the church. If their members were responsible for thsoe fetuses, then by all means they could bury them. (By the way, the deal between the church and the mortuary that received the fetuses originally was illegal. Violation of contract.) However, they went out of their way to get them, without consent, and bury them. Without consent. That's over the goddamn line. Claiming that a book about not calling homosexuals "faggots" and "queers" is a direct attack at the church is sheer lunacy. Yet that's exactly what they're claiming and defending. Their right to be bigoted and hate. You know, they are allowed to have these rights, no doubt. However, when their rights start to overpower mine, and when their rights start to pull against common. ******. sense, then something needs to be said. I'm not jumping on the church saying all their actions ever were wrong. I'm decrying these 2 recent actions. It's the same issue with gay marraige lately. Since when did the church get the right to tell you who you can love? Who you can spend the rest of your goddamned life with? Marraige, by defenition is a holy institution, so yes, they have jurisdiction. However, barring them from having a legally recognized partnership isn't the church domain. It's the one of state and government. Bigotry, hatred and lies have seen the chruch through 2 thousand years, so they're going to stick with it. It's nothing new. I know this. 	Yes, bundt cakes for all! Gimme the Bundt! As far as church goes, I was a christian for quite a few years. I've been a member of several churches. Now, I'm agnostic. I strongly beleive that people have the right to choose, and that some choices only you can make. Personally, I feel that the church is trying way too hard to invalidate some of these choices. The life of your unborn child is your choice. Your sexuality is your choice. Your life partner is your choice. What's wrong with that? 	I know what you mean, Twistex. They have taken it way over the line of normal, and these two events are not isolated. However I still urge people to try and understand the church rather than condemning them right off the bat. I know it's really hard, especially when their actions seem to say that they hate everyone who isn't them. But, without understanding, there can never be real peace. And that's what we should be seeking, the balance where the church is allowed to worship as the ywant while those who are not part of the church can do what they want, both within limits of course. Let me give you this from the perspective of a church goer. You are 30+ and with children of your own, or not. You believe very strongly that each unborn child has a soul and is part of God and has been condemned by the actions of its mother. Boy, do you hate that mother. You're worried for this child the same way people worry sometimes when a loved one has gone on a long road trip and hasn't called in a couple of days. So, you do whatever necessary to give this child a chance. You image its soul writhing in purgatory for all eternity and you just can't bear it, so you break laws and what not for what you believe is the work of God. Doesn't mean you're right or that any of it is legal, but such is the power of emotion and faith. I am not disagreeing with you, Twistex, on these topics. You're right that the Church was way out of line. But I can see it from where they stand, too, since I am a girl and a mother-to-be. And, their position is valid, too. They are trying hard ot stay within what they believe is the way to heaven. shrug May we all live peaceful lives without much worry and with strong morals to back us up in times of need. And, yes, Jesus did say to love everyone. I think his message of that love is something that's needed now more than ever. 	LIke I said before, I used to be a chuch-goer. It's not the devotion that bothers me. It's not the good aspects of the religion, and there are quite a few. And I do understand the point of view. I've been there. It's the consistent "taking it to the next level" crap that gets done. I understand outpourings of faith and support in times of hardship. And here's where it gets asinine. I understand their devotion. I understand the motives. It's when these motives, this devotion drives them to commit acts that flagrantly abuse the rights of everyone else. That purposeful single-minded drive to christian perfection that drains the pure essence of christianity out of it. It's where the line is drawn, and they use religous convictions to step over that line, and act freely. I'm not screaming religion is bad, or wrong, or inherently evil. Once again, purely choice. I'm getting indignant at the closed eyes to the harsh reality that not everyone has to be subject to your laws, rules and beliefs. After the bet between God and Satan over the soul of Job, Job wanders into the desert. He walks until he can walk no further, and drops to his knees. He looks to the sky, and begins to speak. "God, I am your humble servant. I have been nothing but loving and devoted to you. During this entire contest for my sould, I ahve been tempted. I have been inflicted with horrible diseases, yet I remained tru. You killed my livestock, and destroyed my crops. Nothing here will ever grow again. Worst of all, you have killed my family. My wife and children, you saw fit to take. et I stayed your loyal and humble servant. I did not give in to temptation, to sin. Now, after all is finished, I just simply want to know one thing, God. Why? Why me, of all your subjects.. Why me?" And Job waits. He waits until he can wait no longer. Just when he thinks that god will never answer, a thunderhead forms. The voice of God booms down from the sky like thunder, and God answers; "Well Job, there's just something about you, that pisses me off."
