I was too shocked to speak. Maxx just said he was a- a dragon. How could that be? I thought. He was a human!
“But Maxx, you’re a human. What do you mean?” I asked.
“I will tell you as we start walking to the headquarters.” He said, still not looking at me.
“Um, where is the headquarters anyway?” I asked him.
“I was there before. It’s in the north. Come on, let’s get going.” He said as he walked off. Then and there I realized that Maxx had a full past of secrets.
“Why can’t you just fly us there or something?” I suggested.
“It’s not that easy.” He quietly remarked.
We walked off into the woods and I followed him, recognizing the path we were taking. He was leading me to the lake. When we reached the lake, we sat on the grass in a clearing. Maxx had his head down.
“Maxx, are you ok?” I asked with concern, “I mean this whole dragon thing, what’s it about?”
“I guess I should’ve told you from the beginning that I was really a dragon, but I didn’t. You were my closest friend, and…” He paused. “I didn’t want to lose you.”
Everything was silent then expect for a gust of wind. He continued, “It looks like I will have to tell you some of my past.” I nodded. He began, “I once lived among other dragons in all shapes and sizes. That was until a great threat came to our land. Some of the bravest and strongest dragons were killed by the threat. This threat was indeed a man named Torraz.” I don’t know why, but I shivered at the sound of his name. He continued, “I was very foolish then and thought I could take him on. That was a huge mistake. In my battle with him, he used his magic to transform me into a human form. And so I sit before you today. I have looked all over to find him, so I could take my revenge and take back my original form of a dragon.” His eyes gleamed with sadness. I felt so sorry for him. “That not all.” He started again. “If I take too long staying in this form, I will… die. That is why it is extremely important for me to find Torraz. I wish I could say that was all, but I can’t. Torraz has his henchmen out for me. They know I’m a dragon. If I ever let down my guard, they will surely find me and kill me on the spot.” He sighed. He lowered his head even more.
“I’m so sorry, Maxx. I’ll be by your side until we find Torraz and you can be a dragon again.” I announced.
He smiled, and then he said, “I was hoping you would say that.”
“And why is that?” I asked.
“In order for me to return to my dragon form, I need much more than simply defeating Torraz.” He said.
“Like what? Now that I think about it, why are we at this lake?” I asked.
“Have you ever heard of the legends of this lake?” He questioned.
“They say there is a mysterious, powerful, dark creature at the bottom of the lake that takes pleasure in killing any creature close enough to its home.” I explained.
He pointed to the bottom of the lake. “And that’s exactly where we are going!” He declared.
