Yesterday I went to the grocery store and on a whim bought a pack of somen, thinking I might make some. Then as I went to bed, somen unopened and unused, I had the idea of throwing a sort of back-to-school tea ceremony for my closest friends.
So of course, this morning, the first thing I do is look up tea ceremonies. The first site I find, view it here, is a fabulous reference for even the smallest of details on tea ceremonies. It showed me how a tea ceremony is more than just a meal. It is a celebration of the spiritual "tea" world, and of the relationships and encounters we have with people everyday. Unfortunately, it also showed me that there is NO WAY I could pull off a Japanese tea ceremony.
I kept up my search, however, and found several sites, like this one and that one that give some basic how-tos on serving an authentic Japanese meal. Now all I have to do is go to the grocery store, and buy all the ingredients! Let's see... I want to serve somen, and onigiri, and sukiyaki... oh! Tea of course, I'll need that too... and chopsticks to eat with......
