" Thank god the weekends here, i dont know how much more of this i could take!" he said to himself as he strode down the stairs and across the green lawn, unmindfull of the sprinklers throwing transparent gray dots of water onto his crisp white shirt.
"Kaji!"
Kaji looked towards the voice that had called him, stopping and shading his eyes with the hand that held his coat. a pretty young girl was running towards him, her straight bottomed chin length hair swayed around her delicate heart shaped face as she did so,shining a bright coppery red in the sun.the blue ribbon in her hair and her wide, innocent eyes glowed the same shade of blue in the sunlight. Kaji couldnt help but notice how short her navy pleated skirt was as it swayed against her pale legs, and how her blue blazer hugged her curves.
"Yeah Rika?" he asked her when she drew close enough.
She stopped in front of him, hands resting on her delicate knees as she caught her breath. Kaji put his hand down and sighed. "Could you hurry this up rika, its hot out." Kaji griped. Rika was so dainty and clumsy, she always took forever to do anything, or else did it wrong. She looked up appoligeticaly, her face slightly flushed.
"Um, i was just wondering what you might be doing on sunday?" she asked shyly, not making eye contact.
Kaji thought a minuet then answered, " Not much, probably just staying at home." he said shortly, adjusting his coat over his shoulder.
"Well, w-would you want to come see a movie with me? That is if you arent busy?" Rika asked quietly.
Kaji looked down at her. They had known eachother since they were in sixth grade, and Kaji had always had a bit of a crush on her, or what he assumed was a crush. whenever he saw her he would get a weird feeling in his gut, which he took as a crush. Rika had had a crush on him to, and he'd known that, but never felt like asking her out on a date or doing anything much more than homework with her. He wasnt very socialy active and didnt have many friends but had many admirers, mostly female, because of his good looks and easygoing attitude. Rika on the other hand had tons of friends and participated in almost every school club there was at Shinjuku High. she was captain of the student council, the vollyball team, organized the school dances and fundraisers, and organized the end of the year celabrations for her junior and senior classes. She often received love letters but turned them all down, much to the dissapointment of the lovestruck young men in her class.
Kaji thaught about her invatation and decided no harm could come from enjoying a movie with her, and agreed.
"Yeah, why not." he said casually.
Rika's face flushed with pleasure. " Im so glad!" she said sweetly, "I'll see you sunday at four then?" she asked.
"Sunday at four." Kaji agreed.
"I cant wait!" Rika said. she waved as she turned to go, "have a great day Kaji!"
Kaji waved back and started off school grounds towards home.
* * *
Kaji strolled up the sidewalk in front of his aprtment buildings. the apartments were built in sets of two, having two mini houses stuck together with small green yards in between them, all painted the ame factiry style grey, giving them a uniform look.each unit had one window on each side of the door, and mailbox posts set out in the yard. His was unit thirteen and he had no neighbor, so he had the yard to himself.
As he walked the path in front of his unit, from the corner of his eye he saw a gorgiousely tan boy lying on a lawn chair in the yard, wearing only a black towel around his waist and a pair of bright magenta sunglasess with dark lenses, his black hair fluttering lightly in the breeze. Kaji thought nothing of it at first, his mind on his upcomeing date with Rika.
"Nice day." the boy said, his voice deep and silky.
"Sure is." Kaji said without even thinking. he turned into his walk and was unlocking his door when he realized what had just happened. he turned and strode purposfully through the yard over to the boy.
"What are you doing in my yard?" he aske sharply.
The boy lazily lifted one hand and pulled his sunglasses slightly forward with his index finger, the brilliant green of his eyes showing brightly against his brinzed skin.
"Its my yard too." he said simply, pushing his glasses back against his face. "i just moved into unit fourteen."
Kaji gaped at the boy, his eyes on his new neighbors shaply arms and legs. He shook his head to clear his thoughts and looked instead at the boys handsome face.
"Then your my neighber then?" he asked. the boy held out his right hand without looking at him. "Mamiya Hikari, nice to meet you." he said simply. Kaji took his hand and shook it, amazed at how similar its softness was to Rikas hand.
"Shindou kaji." he said. he let go of Hikaris hand. "Nice to meet you Shindou." Hikari said, returning his arm to his side.
"Yeah, you too." Kaji said, turning and walking back to his front door. he looked back at his new neighbor again before walking into his apartment and closing the door.
