Hi everyone.
Anyhoo, me and my bro were talking about the movie earlier today, and it turns out he's done some research about the myths of "Davy Jones" and about "The Flying Dutchman"...Care to hear them? Well, here goes...
Davy Jones is kind of a weird myth. No one really knows much about it, or how is started, but it surfaced at around 1600. People think this came from a bar owner on some island that was probably similar to Tortuga. Anyways, he owned this bar...And when people (drunk, of course) would get too rowdy, he would throw them into his wine cellar, at that time called a "locker". Well...Wine cellars aren't particularly pleasent; if you were drunk and thrown in there, it would probably seem like a dungeon, maybe even hell. So, I suppose people started joking about it, and the myth spread to the seas? There was also a sailor, or pirate who's name was Davy Jones, around at the same time the bar owner was (I think) and he was known for being particularly ruthless, making people walk the plank and junk. Maybe someone made a connection between these two stories, and that's how the myth of Davy Jones has come out as we know it today?
Ah, now the next one is the myth of "The Flying Dutchman", this is where it gets interesting:
In the movie, The Flying Dutchman was Davy Jones' ship, well in the myth, The Flying Dutchman is a person. His name was...Uhh...Well, it escapes me as of now. It was von something. Or something von something. Anyhoo, TFD (As I'll call him until I recover his true name from my memory banks) was known for sailing to places at godly speeds. He would sail from The Netherlands (That's where Dutch people come from, right? o.o) to the Cape of Good Hope (Which is at the very tip of Africa) at an unbelievable pace. For this reason, many believe he made a pact with the Devil. One day, there was a terrible storm. The crew begged him to turn back, as the storm would destroy the boat, but TFD refused. He said something along the lines of "I'll sail through this god-damned storm til judgement day!" It was likely he was drunk off his a**. Anyways, his crew wouldn't put up with that: as the storm was ripping the sails, and ripping chunks of the boat apart, his crew mutinied (If that's the correct term for that). TFD ruthlessly killed the leader of the mutiny; shooting him and throwing him overboard. The rest of the crew gave up with their leader gone. For this cruel crime, god punished him with a curse; that he would sail these seas forever. The curse could only be lifted if he found a woman to share his life with, and TFD could only go ashore once every seven years. I guess he was really bad with the ladies. :/ It's said that if you stare into his eyes, you'll die a terrible death. There have been recorded sightings of his ship off The Cape of Good Hope, the most recent of which were from some people on shore in 1919, and from a German submarine in 1939 (Or was it 49? I'm terrible with numbers n_n wink
POTC seemed to combine both these tails! And that makes me wonder why Tia Dalma and Davy Jones had the same locket. surprised ooo
Maybe she's his daughter, and her mother was the woman who was as changing and unpredicatble as the sea. That would explain why she knows so much of the legend.
I also thought they were in Louisiana, but it struck me that they were actually in Jamacia. My friend's been there; he says half of it is all beachy and villagy, but the other half is jungle, where no one goes...With caves and where the legendary pirates are rumored to have hidden their treasure. I wanna go there!
