1. Why are you thinking about getting a dog?
This question is an important one because so many people answer it wrong.
"I am getting a dog for my children."
I guarantee that most of the time the dog becomes the parents dog with in a matter of months. It is important for a parent to want the dog more than the children. Adults will always be the ones held responsible for the dog in the end.
"I want to get a dog so I can breed my dog with my friend's dog"
There are so many dogs in the shelters I don't know why you would want to become a back yard breeder even for one litter. Puppies are cute but most of those puppies just end up in the shelter. sad
I want to get a dog like in that one movie because that dog was cool!
Just because one dog in a movie was cool and well trained does not mean that the dog you get will be even close. Once a dog is your own they quickly lose their cool factor if you have this mentality. D: EX: Beethoven may be a cute and smart Saint Bernard but they can eat you out of a house and home, just like in the movie, and chew your shoes, just like in the movie, and slobber- and I am telling you it is not nearly as cute in person. D:
Good reasons to get a dog is if you want a companion for the next 13 years, you want someone to help you work your farm and heard your sheep, you want a dog to compete in dog sports with, ext. Being your friend should be number one. smile
