Step One:
Pick a base color. If it's dark, make sure you work from dark to light. If it's light, make sure you go from light to dark.
Step Two:
Make a color pallette to the side with your base color included. Create a new layer for every highlight/shade you work on with the hair. With the next darkest color, make "strands" of hair. Use mainly triangle shapes to achieve this.
Step Three:
Repeat this step using another darker color, just outlining the darker color you already used.
Step Four:
Add brighter highlights if you wish. Just scatter them here and there. Smaller lines the better.
Step Five:
Now you go through all the layers and use the smudge tool. Follow the direction of the hair. Don't circle or anything, or else it'll turn out weird. If achieved correctly, I should be able to get hair that looks highlighted and natural.
If desired, use a 100 px soft brush and just dab an even darker color here and there in places.
