Thump... Thump... Thump....
I can't stop. If I do, someone will catch up to me eventually. The soft patter of rain on the roofs and my sore feet splashing through the endless puddles sounds through the alleyways. A black cat darts out of the way as I pass by, hissing and baring its fangs at me. But I don't pay attention to it. I'm more worried and focused on escaping this dark city with its heartless inhabitants. As I reach the end of the alley, I slow my pace and press myself up against the wall's shadow, listening to the in-time footsteps of the nation's soldiers tromp by. This entire place lost to the government's control a few days ago. My parents forced me to flee from the comfort of our home to escape to a free city. I can only pray and hope they're still alive, or at least free to think for themselves. Everyone here doesn't have memories of their past. They've been brainwashed and controlled by him.
All goes quiet except for the downpour of the storm, leaving the street wide open for me to cross. I dash across it while staying alert to any snipers. I remember hearing a story of the free-thinkers attempting escape several times but each one of them was found dead with a hole in the back of their head. I reach the other side of the street safe and unharmed, but I'm not home free yet. Just as I turn around, I see the people I'm evading. Government officials. They're relentless and stubborn. No matter how far I run, how well I hide myself, they find me every single time. That's because they're werewolves, they can sniff out my scent.
Yet again I'm on the run. My aching feet can only take me so far until I can't run anymore. My body feels like a ton on a pair of twig legs. My lungs burn madly, screaming to get oxygen to my dying muscles as I turn my head slowly to see them. They're closing the distance. I don't think I can make it. A rush of water draws my attention however and I glance off to my right. A fast flowing river. It's about thirty feet down beside me, but the chances of dying or drowning are large. It'll be better than living a life of control and monotony. Without another thought, my feet take me over the edge and down to the roaring waters below. It's a scary feeling to sail through the air, not knowing if you'll die or not in the raging river like this one. My numb body plunges into the icy current, almost stopping my breathing immediately as I sink under the surface and waves. I fight them for a while to get air and succeed a few times, but waves after waves wash over my head. Water begins to pour into my lungs, and then darkness begins to enter my vision. I feel something grab hold of me and pull me out, but I'm too tired to do anything with lifeless arms and legs. I see someone before I completely lose vision, seeing them hover over me.
A girl.
