She stepped back onto the ledge of the building. Her hair flew off to the side as the wind threatened to pull her down. She looked down the barrel of the silver tipped Glock. She followed up the trigger holders arm and stared directly into his eyes.
"What are you gonna do," she spat, lying for her life, "Shoot me?"
The man laughed a big deep rumble laugh. She remembered it from the parties. From the good times, and the high times. He always had that same Grand Canyon echo of a laugh. He walked forward a few steps, testing her boundaries.
"No," He called, shaking his head, "I’m going to arrest you Ramona. I’m going to take you down to the station, and you’re going to get help."
Ramona cackled, almost tripping over her shoe laces. He took another step forward in fear of her falling, but at the very second his foot touched the ground she was fine.
"Take me in!" She mocked, throwing her head back. "You don’t understand Daniel, I've seen the world." She motioned to her eyes and leaned forward. "Were all nothing Daniel!" She yelled, throwing her arms back. "You’re a corrupt backhand cop trying to arrest the only girl he ever really loved. And I’m standing on a god damn ledge because the only help I ever had decided that I wasn’t good enough!" She took a step down, the moonlight reflecting against her out-dated junkie eyes.
"I can help you," Daniel pleaded, dropping his hands, "I know people, it’s going to be okay."
"You maniacal hypocritical son of a b***h!" She screamed, slamming her feet against the roof. "How can you say that kind of s**t?"
"I got help." He smiled, holding out a hand. Her anger was nothing new. Same old Ramona, with a joint hanging from her mouth, and the carpet bag pill pocket.
"Yeah, and now look at you." She chuckled. "How do you live with yourself?"
Daniel looked down at his badge. The memories flooded his mind like ants. The forever humble basement smoke. Sleeping under a different set of stars every night. He remembered the way Ramona’s skin looked underneath the morning sun. He felt the dew of a grassy field on his feet. Then he looked back up at Ramona.
He searched for the girl he used to know.
But all he saw was his prisoner.
"Get down on the ground, you’re under arrest." he ordered, holding his gun back up.
"Who are you?" Ramona asked. "I mean really. Under the smoke and luster you’re just some kid who made it through school. You’re just like all the others. We had the world, for just an instant. We understood how a life was supposed to be lived. And now what do you have, a storybook lie?"
At that moment, a small bead of water fell down Daniels cheek, and his training fled him.
"Please, don’t make me ask again." He pleaded, shaking his head.
Ramona turned and stood back on the ledge. She looked out at the city beneath her feet. She fumbled in her pocket, but the pills were gone. She watched the lights turn from orange to pink. Ramona felt the wind whisper to her, and she heard the earth pulling her down.
"I won’t surrender Daniel." She whispered. "I know who I am."
Ramona held her arms up parallel to the ground.
Daniel screamed at her again and again.
"I let her in, if your wondering why. Cause shes a spy for the BBI." She sang to the moon, "I let her in and I started to cry, and then I knew I wanted to die. Oooh, little Ramona... oooh, little Ramona... oooh, little Ramona."
Daniel ran to the edge, dropping his gun.
But by the time he got there, Ramona was gone.
