Today is in A minor.

The anniversary of her death.

As we pick gladiolus for her grave,

I hear her voice in my own

while shooing the cat from the clematis

that I planted in her memory.

We leave for the cemetery,

and I hear her again saying don't cry.
She used to tell me not to grieve

for too long after she dies,

because the soul cannot rest

and move to where it

needs to be. I realise now

she was speaking

for both of us.
