Who is the core audience for gadgets? Geeks. who has always been the core audience for gadgets? Geeks. So why is it that mock the geek seems to be the main advertising strategy for apple and most phone and phone related products? Is routinely bullying your core audience in the form of things like "my circle" or "apple vs. PC" commercials really the best way to sell technology? I'm not convinced.
* Similarly, I really hate the generalized mock the costumers strategy. Vonage finally pulled the "Our customers are really dumb and make bad decisions" campaign, but they played those things for most of a year. I've come to loath Verizon for calling me a thief and a lier for wanting a no frills phone. Apparently Burger King thinks calling their customers geeky and stupid would h4elp them move glassware meals. Yeah. I would argue the Geiko caveman campaign is, particularly the most recent one has as a subtext we are nasty bullies who ruin your happiest moments so join us to avoid being harassed. uh thanks/
* I admit, I watch commercials for subtext and often come up with my own alternate more truthful slogans. (Sandals: We no longer bar homosexuals, but don't expect to feel comfortable or have PDAs with your partner here. Extends: For guys too lazy to work on their foreplay and too insecure to properly please their partners).
