I shift under the thick downy covers and drift off to sleep. I'm over the orphanage, soaring high in the night sky. But suddenly, i falter and start plumiting to the ground at alarming speed. I wake with a start. Even though it seems I've only been asleep a few minutes, light shines through the dirty windowpane. "You alright?" my best friend Jeremy askes. He's an older boy with shoulder length dark auburn hair and sky-blue eyes with touches of hunter-green. In the right light his pupils are lined with gold. I nod and explain that it was just that strange dream again. I've had it for a while now. I stretch and get out of bed, my feet freeze when they touch the floor. I brush my hair and teeth and wait for the other children to get up. Jeremy and I are early risers which is one of the reasons why were friends. "Why didn't you wake me up for the sunrise?" I ask, trailing my slender fingers through my long black hair. "You look so cute when your sleeping that I didn't want to wake you." he replied slickly. Even though i try my best to avoid it, whenever he says something like that i start blushing. Damn him, he does that just to see me blush so he can tease me about it. Any minute now he'll say something like 'Aw that was too easy!' or 'Is that all it takes to get you to admit you like me?', sometimes hes so annoying! And i don't actually like him, its just hard to tell when hes serious or when hes faking. He's a good friend though. I'm gonna hate the day when were adopted or when he gets kicked out. He's only a year older than me but nonetheless, he'll get kicked out next year. I'm 16 and he's 17. "So what are you planning to ask for on your birthday?" his question surprises me. "I don't know. I couldn't really use anything else." I reply sheepishly. "Really? So you don't want anything like, say, a boyfriend?" he pairs this with a smile and his signiture sideways glance. My ears grow hot and i know im blushing like mad, blood rushes to my cheeks which turns his smile into an ear-to-ear grin. "Oh! So you do! Well who's the lucky guy you've got your eye on?" he asks teasingly. "No one! You know i can't stand all the little depressed kids here thats why i hang out with you!" I shout in defense. He covers my mouth with a hand and shushes me. "Not so loud! you'll wake everyone up!" he chuckles. I make an effort to ruffle his hair but he dodges and messes up mine instead. I try again and we end up getting into a big wrestling match, and we fall off the bed and onto the floor. The only reason the match stops is because I'm now under him. I've never seen his face get so red! "You should see yourself! Your redder than a ripe strawberry!" I laugh. An index finger wraps gently around my chin and a pair of lips meet mine. My heart rate increases and it might burst right out of my chest if Jeremy wasn't pinned to it. My eyes close and my arms wind around his neck. When he pulles back, he just stares at me in astonishment. I mimic this expression. Someone clears their throat to draw our attention. It was the owner of the bed next to mine. "Sorry Timothy. did we wake you up?" I ask. "Its TIM, and yes you did!" he says testily. For a nine-year-old he sure has an attitude! "Hey it's not her fault that your a light sleeper!" Jeremy states in my defense. 'Tim' pulls a face that makes the impression that he doesn't like us but he rolls over and goes back to sleep. "What to do now that everyone's asleep?" He asks me. I look back up at him with my crystal-blue-almost-clear eyes to see that he's grinning like a fox. This coaxes a light blush to my face. "I'm kidding! That's about all the excitement i can take for one morning!" he jokes. "So when you were asking if i wanted a boyfriend, were you offering to fill the position?" I tease. "Maybe, that depends on what you think of it." he replies, while looking away and blushing heavily. I start to answer when the head nun bursts through the door and catches us. "Children! We mustn't succumb to our needs of the flesh! Now get up, get dressed and report to mass." she instructs. Jeremy scrambles up off of the floor and obeys while I take my sweet time. I unbutton my nightdress trying to make the nun leave but she stares back at me. So i let it slip to the floor so I'm standing there in just my underwear and my knee-high socks. The nun gets the picture and leaves quite quickly. I smile in victory and get dressed in my mass clothes which are a pair of black Mary Jane's a long black skirt and a long sleeved white dress-shirt. Yuck! In a way i can't wait to get outta here. Mass was as boring as its always been.
