While aboard a ship with her parents, Joseph <then known as Josephian> would play on deck dureing the day, watching the sailors as they did their daily work about her. She as interested and any of the sailors took favor on her and showed her the workings of the ship, even letting her take a turn at the helm for a time. Dureing the eve one night, they were boarded by Pirates who slew the crew and many of the adults who faoght back, includeing Josephs. Knowing that what they would do with her as a prisoner, she took the name Joseph and pretended to be a boy to save not only her life, but her vertue aswell
