The Columbia Scholastic Press Association's 26th annual Gold Circle Awards program, its annual competition for individual achievement by student writers, editors, designers and photographers, attracted 12,037 entries from colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the United States. Of those entries, only 1,831 received either a First, Second, Third Place or Certificate of Merit Award during the 2009 competition. These entries came from 451 publications from the United States, Canada and international schools following the American plan of education.
Francis Howell High School students received three of these prestigious awards.
Lauryn Flotte took first place in the Page one design: Portfolio of work category. She also placed third in the Page one design: Newsmagazine or magazine format color category with her "Cheating" cover. Cartoonist Danielle Steinger placed third in the Cartoon portfolio of work category.
In the 2008 competition, the Howelltonian yearbook received one second place award in opening and closing spread design.
"The fact that we've placed the two times we've entered is a testament to how good our publications staffs are," adviser Michele Dunaway said. "The competition is extremely difficult. I'm extremely proud of the Lauryn and Danielle and all the staff members who put their heart and soul into every publication."
