"RIIIIIINNNGGGG!" was the only sound that was going through small building. It continued to ring for another good ten seconds before a boy in a forest green shirt and jeans picked it up and pressed the green 'talk' button,"Stone and Company Delivery Service. How may I help you?" he said smiling. It was the first call they had recieved all day, and it was early afternoon. As usual, business was slow, and not many people trusted in their service, due to people not recieving their packages on time."Uh-huh, we do rush deliveries.........how fast are they? Hmm, they're about one or two days......Oh, you need it by tonight? I'm sorry sir, we dont have enough money to take a taxi, and even our fastest foot messenger takes at least two days to get to the destination if it's on the other side of the city....Okay, I understand, but thanks for calling anyway. Click."
Jake put the phone back on the hook and sighed. That was the seventh customer they had lost that week. Man, business sucked. He looked over toward the three children that were his younger brother, and two cousins, and gave a small smile. Rai, who was nine, was training to become a squire, Eliza, the only girl, wanted to be a dancer, but Jay was still four, so he couldnt quite choose. Jake walked back over to the table that had a ton of bills piled on it. Water bill, electric bills, food, phone, and alot of others. He stared at the pile and groaned,"Well, I'll just have to face the fact that we're in debt," he told himself. If only Ani would get off her lazy a** and work, then we might be able to pay off one-third of the bills, but nooooooo...., he thought. He looked out of the window and glared. He stuck his head out,"ANI! Get your lazy a** in here!" he shouted. A few seconds later, a girl in black shorts, a red, sleeveless turtleneck sweater, a utility belt, and long black hair hopped through,"Yes?"
"Where have you been?"
Her eyes darted from side to side before looking back to him,"...Places..."
Jake continued to stare at her,"What kind of places?"
"Secret places...." she replied, giving a sheepish smile.
Sighing, Jake walked over to the counter and picked up a package, holding it for a moment before turning back to Ani,"Here, this came in yesterday. And this time, I want you to actually deliver it." The girl groaned,"How far is it?" she complained. Jake threw the package to her,"It's at the bakery. It's not that far, and the guy there is in desperate need of it. So don't slack off this time!"
Aniella groaned when the box fell into her hands,"But last time, you said Brandy could do it!" she protested. Jake looked to her,"Brandy is at her other job. Remember?" And she wont get back until tonight, so just do it." After that, he headed back over to the bill-infested table and sat down. Ani rolled her eyes and hopped out of the window.
~~~
Ani landed on the ground with a light thud. She stood up and looked around, watching as people passed her by. She watched as a woman with a crying baby crossed the street, a gang of hoodlums 'chillin' next to the drugstore, and a group of kids running by playing tag. She stood there for a few moments before looking up at the building where she 'worked'. Hmph, Stone&Company, I wanted to call it 'Mail R Us'..... she thought to herself before heading off to the bakery.
~~~
After watching Ani jump through the window, Jake turned his attention back toward the the bills. Going throught them once again, he layed his head down on the table. It was also tax season, so even if they managed to pay all the bills, they still had to pay extra. Sighing, he got up and headed toward the phone. He picked it up and dialed the phone of Elena, the actual owner of the company, and listened to the rings. Ten rings later, there was still no answer. Groaning in frustration, he put the phone down and faced the concrete wall. With all the power that he could summon, he punched the wall, creating a hole five feet in diameter.
