And now for something completely different...
...or as different as a damned blog can be, anyway. It started out as a project, it devolved into a chronicling of my misanthropy, rage, and occasional fits of glee. It sounds good, though, and might even make you laugh.
The Goat
I've been looking for a new job recently, because "intern" is short for "first to be cut when clients can't afford to bill anymore." I'm not sure if it always encompasses "right before Christmas," but for me it did. gonk

Anyway, I've been looking for a new job and it's made me think about old jobs, and about what I would and would not be willing to do if I can't find something suitable. I'm pretty sure I will never, ever wait tables again, or do anything in the service industry. Why, you ask? Because it's absolutely dehumanizing. I'm not talking about the low wages, or having to clean up food, or wearing a polyester uniform in stupid colors. Those things are all part of paying your dues and that's fine. No, it's dehumanizing because corporate policy requires that you take abuse, no matter how foul, with a smile and a simper. Someone won't shut up about your bum? "What else can I get for you, sir?" Someone calls you a moron at length because the food isn't cooked and served in two minutes? "I'm sorry ma'am, is there anything I can do for you?"

This is wrong.

I don't think I should be able to smart off to anyone who gives me lip, but I don't believe I should be barred from saying to that pervy bum-lover that "Sir, that is inappropriate, please stop." I don't believe it would be wrong to direct the abusive woman to a manager, who would then politely ask her to stop or leave. And I have to wonder if maybe, just maybe, the world would be collectively better if being mean didn't get you a free pie or your waiter's (fake) phone number. If being mean actually had any consequence, maybe people would stop before they did it. As it stands, though, the crueler you are, the more free things and compliments people give you because God forbid they lose business. That's messed up. It's even more messed up that there are policies that forbid basic human dignity, that insist you be fired if you say, "Please don't do that, it makes me uncomfortable." Having faced down the decision, I would rather be on the dole than have a job where I have to smile and reward people who treat me like a prostitute or a whipping boy.

And that is wrong.

I think it's time for us to collectively say, "Look, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, but the obnoxious customer gets a box for their food and a polite request to leave." It's not cute to be a pig, it's not okay to insult a stranger who is just trying to earn money, and it's appalling that no one ever has to consider how others might feel. Come on, people, let's stop endorsing horrible behavior. You might lose a customer, but I have to feel we'd all have a lot to gain if there was some reason to check your tongue and think about your behavior. Stop rewarding cruelty and viciously immature behavior. Stop giving creepy sexual advances the okay. Stop thinking of everyone else on the planet as subhuman or your own personal toilet. Stop letting your kids ask strangers for money, and train them not to pee on the floor. And for God's sake, thank or say a kind word to someone who has to swallow their self-respect to turn a buck.

I totally agree, I'm a receptionist so I'm the first "port of call" when it comes to complaints. There are people who cannot be pleased because they're determined to be critical of everything from the moment they step in the door - you're polite to them even though they'll sit there badmouthing everything "under their breath" so that everyone can still hear it.
Since everyone knows that complaints get you everywhere they can sit there and pick everything apart without having to care about the people they're treading on.
It's really pretty disgusting how we reward rude, abusive behavior just because it comes from a customer but there's no way I'd be taking any creepy sexual advances, luckily I think my managers would be pretty reliable in that department - if they didn't think it was funny. -_-;

Absolutely. It's bad enough that people think it's okay to take their issues out on you, when it's pretty clear you can't have screwed them over, since it's your job to answer calls and occupy the desk. It's worse when there is no consequence to pay for doing that. Like, seriously, being an incredible jerk should not get you more stuff than being good. It should get you asked to leave. I don't know why we suddenly became so concerned with numbers or not offending everyone that we founded an entire industry on treating people poorly.

Sadly it's not going to change either, companies care more about making money than about their staff, the only thing they'll get for keeping their staff happy is a lower turnover - which they probably couldn't care less about.

In my case if a customer is really angry I just ask if they want to speak to the manager, I can't give them free stuff (and that's usually what they're after) and the manager will probably hear about it sooner or later because once you've placated them with something you know they're still going to write a detailed hate-filled letter to anyone higher up to get more out of it.

I think it would wake some people up a bit if they were aware that the people they're talking to aren't as stupid as they think, we all know it when people are just trying to get something for free.

while a big part of me still agrees with your assessments, and i completely agree that you should have some sexual harassment leeway with customers, i just don't know.
i've been reading up a lot on human interaction recently, and i'm just not sure punishment would solve any more problems than being nice.
as i said though, i understand where you are coming from, it had a lot to do with my choice to leave one of my previous jobs. there is a point when turning the other cheek no longer works, yes...sorry, i should have though about that some more with the bum commentary... i just don't know where that line is, and i don't know if anyone can really know.
i am sorry to hear about your most recent job though, and wish you luck.
