HISTORY!!! scream
Peter Peter pumpkin eater,
Had a wife and couldn't keep her!
He put her in a pumpkin shell,
And there he kept her very well!
Any ideas what that actually means? Me neither. However i can tell you where it started. The words of the "Peter Peter pumpkin eater" rhyme originate not in Europe, but in America; there's a first. The rhyme has become known to British children only in recent years (last 50) becasue, for most British children it has only just become clear exactly what a pumpkin is! Because its not native to the British shores the vast majority of the British population have never eaten pumpkin! The American tradition of dressing up for Halloween, and the whole using pumpkins as lanterns thing, together with 'Trick or Treat' has only reached our (Australian) shores a few years ago.
Those poor deprived Poms (sorry if your a pom). But seriously never had a pumpkin? eek
