Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update 10/13
Journals Lost
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of the good fortune of working at Gaia, must be in want of a journal. I saw a profile comment that asked why my journal was private, and I was surprised -- it shouldn't have been private at all. So, I logged into my journal, and... there was nothing there!

It is kind of a sickening feeling, like the kind you get when you close the door and instantly realize that you had left the keys in there.

How did my journal get wiped? Ah, well, two devs had been looking at that really strange journal bug where you see your journal when you go to someone else's profile, and through a series of coincidences and extremely odd fortune, had managed to wipe my journal clean. It was kind of a really special case, and didn't touch any other journals, and was easily recovered given liberal applications of regexes on humongoid backup files.

Security Measures
A screaming came across Site Feedback. The new security measures that were announced were perhaps confusing for a number of reasons; for one, they didn't announce the time frame, so a lot of people thought that they had immediately taken place, and second, they were a little vague.

So here is the clear description of it:
- The security measures won't hit until November.
- The security measures are opt-in. Basically, they default off, and you'll choose to enable them.
- When you change an e-mail, you'll have to verify at both the old e-mail and the new e-mail. This prevents a hacker from changing the e-mail on your account without you knowing about it.
- If you have the security measures on and you log in from a different IP than one you've used before, you'll have to validate by e-mail before being able to log in. Once you've validated from that IP, you'll be able to log in from that IP in the future.
- If you turn the security measures on, you'll have to validate against your e-mail first.
- If you turn the security measures off, you'll have to validate against your e-mail first.

Update 10:00pm: We ignore the low 8 bits of the IP. So, if you're using a router, you won't constantly get asked to reverify.

I think that covers it. Discussions in the office involved a) how to deal with people that lose their original e-mail address, b) whether this should be opt-in or opt-out, and c) what percentage of the users will elect to turn on this security measure if we make it opt-in. I think for now that we're going with opt-in to see how many people start using it.

Inventory
Happy inventories are all alike; every unhappy inventory is unhappy in its own way. This is the most asked question ever, for understandable reasons. You see, objects have the notion of a location -- for example, main inventory, suitcase, equipped, house -- and a slot, which is their position in that particular location, with 0 being the top. Slots must be consecutive.

So, for reasons that are hard to enumerate in the brief span of a journal entry, the item norm team went with a location to indicate equipped status. So, if you had in your main inventory:

HAT = slot 0
COAT = slot 1
PANTS = slot 2

and then decided to put on the coat, your main inventory is:

HAT = slot 0
PANTS = slot 1

and your equipped inventory is

COAT = slot 0

So, based on this, you can see why your items have to move to the beginning or the end: they're in an entirely different location, and thus sort differently. That said, users absolutely hate hate HATE it, and we think we have a potential fix for this. Fieryange1 is going to spend next week trying to work this fix in and also improve the performance problems with the existing inventory, so I'll talk about this next week after she's had some time to look at it.

Halloween Event
Through the cube walls, between the curling posters, I can see Fleep n' company working on the Halloween event. Yes, there is a Halloween event, despite one rumor to the contrary. It should absolutely and totally rock. I'm looking forward to it, it sounds really cool -- those guys always try to go the extra mile.

Aquarium Overseer
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral of the Gaia lies a small unregarded gray overseer. This overseer is stingy, and does not open all the time!

We have a bunch of fixes to aquarium that should nail the overseer stinginess problems, the items moving randomly around the tank problem, and the frozen items suddenly being unfrozen problem. You see, in item norm we have the notion of item properties; individual attributes that you can put on an instance of item. We needed this for battle (since, for example, your Mantis ring has a different charge level than everyone else's Mantis ring), but it turned out to be useful for everything from Paypal fraud reduction to Aquariums. Anyway, there was a problem with some percentage of the property writes that were going on; with the fixes rolling out this should be taken care of. These should roll out Tuesday at this rate.

New Inbox
Somewhere in old Gaia, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, an inbox lived not long ago; one of those with bright colorful pastels and big buttons. So, the inboxes changed quite a bit, and opinion on the new inboxes are running 50/50, but it is safe to say that the devs on this are paying close attention to the feedback. If you've like to provide feedback please go to Text Message feedback and leave a message.

Maintenance Tonight
It was a bright cold night in October, and the clocks were striking midnight. We're doing maintenance at midnight tonight; we don't expect any problems but if the site goes a little wonky, don't worry -- we're working on it. We'll make an announcement about it in a bit.

Also: we are going to start doing weekly development announcements, but are still figuring out what goes into it. More info on this in a bit.

Bugs Fixed
I write this sitting near a kitchen sink of bug fixes. Bugs fixed recently:
- tons of find friends enhancements
- fixed IE6 problems in marketplace
- Easter Egg: Gaia logo now glows when you hover over it (to indicate
that you can click on it, which users were missing)
- various arena fixes
- arena winners have been granted their gold
- updated Mischief Makers page
- changed To Do section in My Gaia
- more tweaks to the avatar dropdown
- two battle patches, in preparation for battle release
- improved performance of guild bot
- enforced stricter passwords on password changes
- umm, some others, which I'll post when I remember them.

Finally...
The first line of each subsection resembles a line from a famous book. Anybody think that they know them all?

First off, I like the new security measures. I was so surprised at the fact that it wasn't going over so well.
Funny, people ask for better security, then complain when it comes.
-sighs- Well that's people for you, we're just never satisfied. rolleyes

Can't wait to see the inventories revamped again in the near future. xp

Whoever thought Halloween was canceled should be bopped in the head.

The only problem I've had with Aquariums is that I was never told my goldfish died. They just up and disappeared and I never got a drop for them. emo

Haven't tried the text messaging, but I love[/ii] the new layout. Props to the people who did it! Just please try and get that guild where you can't delete/open a message because it wasn't flagged yet fixed.

I noticed the glow too. Nice touch, I must say. wink

I like the new security features, but I have a concern about the IP verification that occurs when the features are activated--my parents live in an area where broadband is not available and have a dial-up internet connection.

So if I visited them and decided to log into Gaia, would that mean I would have to verify by email every single time I tried to log in, since dial-up users have dynamic IP addresses which changes each time they dial?

Would it be possible for Gaians to pick and choose from the new security options, as opposed to getting the bulk package?

One question: Since my roommates and I have a router and a dynamic IP, do we have to validate everytime the last 3 numbers of the IP change? Because this happens every 24 hours since our provider does an automatic logout every 24 hours. Though those security measures are a great idea, it would be very annoying to validate everytime the router gets a new IP...

Personally, I think the avatar customization area should be used to rearrange your clothing items, and the actual inventory be used to rearrange everything else. Also, I'd like to be able to save my favorite outfits for future use, and still be able to customize it if I find an item that makes it look better.

Yeah, I know, not my place to say. I just thought I'd give some ideas in case you needed some ^__^.

I'll probably be one of those who uses the updated security measures. I've been hacked before, and I've had friends with the same problems, so I wouldn't mind the extra security.

I think the new security measures are great. I really like that we need to verify to change email addresses. I just hope most people opt to use it. I know I will.

I will heart forever whoever can fix inventories. I hate that mine seems to have a mind of its own and won't do what I tell it to do.

I think the new inbox is really nice.

BTW, some tiny things that I'm loving:
- When you sell a Quantity item in the MP, the Quantity defaults to blank/zero, rather than the full amount you own.
- The new Wishlist page. (Can we please please please someday be able to arrange this how we want, like we can do with our Friendslist? Please? crying )

God Pan...you and the rest of the Gaian staff blow my hair back...your patience on the "feedback" in the SF of these wonderful changes you've all made is amazing...you respond so well and thoroughly to our concerns, it truly makes me a believer in Gaia and all that you guys (and gals) do.

Keep up the amazing work, and for those with concerns on any of the above, I'll try to spread the word of this journal entry.

What happen the hacker did your friend list and trade the item you have to other account and change your name
If you have a reset button to Fix the Account to back to normal

Thanks for the insight, Pan! I feel much better about this new security feature now that I know it's opt-in. ='3
I changed my e-mail anyway, the whole "not knowing what was going on" drove me to do it, but I was planning on doing it for a long time.
I guess the whole announcement being vague was a good and a bad thing (in my case, anyway). I'm going to opt-in to it anyway, mainly because I solved my biggest problem with it! xD

Keep working hard! And thanks for keeping us grumpy users posted~

Hey Pan, while you are at the kitchensink of bugfixes, open the cupboard and make yourself a sammich of PAT ON THE BACK. Thank you so much for being active lately, and understanding and (most importantly) impossibly patient with the negative feedback.

And just to bring to attention: I've heard random complaints of people timing out page load requests when they use the "www." and "login" domains, but removing said prefixes or replacing it with "avatarsave" fixes the issue for them. Might there be an issue with the load balancer in place?

commentCommented on: Fri Oct 17, 2008 @ 06:14am
Here are the sources of your opening lines:

Journals Lost :: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Security Measures :: Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
Inventory :: Anna Karenina by Tolstoy
Halloween Event :: The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner
Aquarium Overseer :: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
New Inbox :: Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
Maintenance Tonight :: 1984 by George Orwell
I Capture the Castle :: Dodie Smith

The only ones that really got me scratching my head were Tolstoy, Pynchon, and Smith, especially Pynchon. I've never read Gravity's Rainbow, but I did recall those lines as from the beginning. Smith I admit to googling, sorry. But you definitely went far and wide through my recollections for these. Good show.

Now what do I win? mrgreen

Thanks again for the hefty update, and I really like the idea of sitewide announcements once a week. If it helps I might suggest folding them into a Cindy Donivinh report. It's not out of character for her to pass along that information, and with con season wrapping up it's not like she needs to be imparting Road Trip dates. That way you don't get swamped with PMs like the few times that you've signed Admin's entries as Pan.

Thanks for getting on the Arena stuff, a lot of us have been waiting for the fixes for quite some time. Not to mention the gold. Is the timer working now so that voting/submission periods will end when they should? That's still muddy, and it's often very important to get a good head of steam behind your entry as soon as the voting opens. That's impossible if we can't predict when that's happening.

And thank you thank you thank you for looking at inventory fixes. I'm also still getting errors of items jumping around after I've sorted them. The only way I can reliably sort my inventory is in this sequence:

1. Load Arranger
2. Tell it not to shut down Arranger when it lags my browser.
(Repeat Step 2 as needed)
3. Wait for thumbnails to load (2-3 minutes)
4. Move all items that need sorting to the top of my inventory. Move items in/out of storage as needed, but ONLY in one move, ctrl+clicking each item. Multiple moves break it and move the wrong things.
5. Reload
6. Repeat steps 1-3
7. Sort items as needed.

If I don't follow this exact order then the items all end up in the wrong spots. Frequently 20-30 game items (which I keep at the bottom of my inventory) will leap unexpectedly into the mix elsewhere.

I don't know the source of this, I suspect it has something to do with writing new Location Maps with each save, but it makes the Arranging process take 3-4 times as long as it should.

That said, thanks again for the updates. They're honestly one of the highlights of my time on the site. Especially when we play games!

What about the problem with people not getting drops from their fish when they die? I've only had one fish die so far, and I didn't get anything from it.
I've seen other people report that they haven't gotten anything either or that it took hours for it to pop up in their inventory; while other people are having no problems at all getting their drops.
What's the deal? cry

Kiss me...

I LOVE YOU. <3

I've been hopping around all evening in the Q&A Bug sub-forum posting about inventories, and theories, and pleading for an update. Although I am disappointed at the ridiculous amount of time it took y'all [I do not blame you personally] to respond, I am at least relieved that someone said something about it.

Could you guys not consider the way the old inventory system was programed? That didn't shuffle our things around as this new[er] system does. ^^ I'm not you guys, though, but that's my two cents for ya. Best of luck with the tinkering; many an inventory would be much obliged.

Thanks for keeping us posted!

As ever, thanks for your informative update, Pan!

Yay, random journal entries no longer appear in my profile~! blaugh

Um, less yay: the new PM box, while consistent with the rest of the site, looks so much more boring and sad than the previous version. sweatdrop I know Gaia doesn't enjoy looking back, but I hope there is a vision of a future Gaia that has a little more fun color than this grey-and-white scheme we've been getting this year.

The Aquarium has mostly been a lot of fun; however, Gaia ate one of my Arrow Fish today. gonk It's just . . . gone, and it had been gaining happiness each day, too, so I don't think it died. crying Ah, well, that might be the end of the Aquarium feature for me, as I don't intend to sink Gaia Cash into it.

Props to those in charge of MCs this month: Two amazing and excellent items! I've been hearing a ton of positive feedback about these items, well deserved. Great job.

Also, our hopes and prayers go with Fieryange1, the brave dev who may be able to recover our Inventories from the nonarrangeable desert of their current state. Ganbatte, Ange1, you can do it~! crying Gaia needs you~! whee

Thanks for the advance notice about the site maintenance, too. We'd be so lost without your guidance.

Thank you very much for the update! heart

Personally, I'm super excited to hear things won't get moved to the end of our inventories any more, as that is a HUGE hassle! I don't mind the greying out, and I hope the tabbed pagination can go away at some point, too.

I also have to second the motion, wishing for a customizable wishlist! Even if just a "move to top" option like we have in our friends list was added, it would be very helpful. I do have to say that I hope that if that was added, it could be pushed into place in profiles too, as wishlists come up very differently in profiles than the way we currently have them set up on our private wishlists.

Anyway, keep up the great work, we heart you guys! *hands cookies*

I still don't know if I'll use the extra security. I might just turn 'em on to see what happens (I hope these are getting ported to you-know-where).

Inventory, meh. Haven't had any problems with it but I have broken 100 items in both pockets and storage.

Halloween event sounds interesting; wonder what we'll get this year.

Aquarium overseer: Yeah I've been having problems with him. He just doesn't seem to like opening bright and early and sometimes I'll have to check back later in the day.

Love the new inbox. Very simple and clean. I would like to point out though the report button doesn't stand out much in this version.

Maintenance: sometimes it's gotta get done. You guys are doing it at midnight, which is three in the morning here, so I won't be caught up in it. The weekly Dev announcements are long overdue; I had a little party when I saw that.

Lot's of bug squashed it looks like Pan. Nicely done, I actually benefitting from the arenas gold one biggrin

Looking good, keep it up. Thanks for the update.

Well, about the inventory, we could be able to move it all around and after all changes save it, so we could move things around as much as we liked and when finally we thought that was the way we liked, we could save it. I think the main problem is that you can`t move lots of items freely... because at some point the item you are moving doesn`t correspond anymore to the one you wanted to move. And you could add an auto-save as the person sell an item from the "organize inventory" thing, that way people won`t sell things twice... just an idea...

I hate to double post, but there's a new issue cropping up, this time with the "slow down, hotshot" warnings. Not just me, but a bunch of other users have gotten them far too frequently lately, and from what I saw, not even on the MP. I got mine while doing tattoos on my mule last night (my first ever warning!), and when I slowed down and gave the pages more than enough time to load in between, I got a second and I was locked out of my mule for over a half hour.

I'm not sure whether you guys have been tweaking it or what, but something is screwy about it, and needs to be looked at. I really don't want to be caught up in a mass banning like the game item glitch or the vending thing not too long ago, and I'd rather let you guys know about it so it doesn't happen again.

I have a thread here:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/site-feedback/feedback-on-gaia-s-slow-down-warnings/t.44310863_1/#6

And it outlines my experience in more detail. I'm hoping to get more feedback from other users, so we can really pin down the problem. Thank you! heart

Thanks for the nice long update! I really appreciate all the explanations of how you're working on glitches. I don't hate hate hate the moving items like most Gaians , I hate the tabs far more. Moving items wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have tabs. As it is, I open up like 10 tabs in separate windows just while trying to get an outfit together. The one thing I'd really like to see repaired would be the inventory arranger, but that's not going to come probably until after you guys fix housing eh? sweatdrop Well, thanks for the progress report, I look forward to seeing the weekly announcements.

The Aquarium Overseer section totally resembles Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's guide first line. I squee'd aloud when I read it. But I may be confusing it with one of the many Terry Pratchett books I've read (The Colour of Magic?). Nonetheless, it resembles a good British humour novel and I appreciate that. Thank you.

The book quotes made me roflol. Good show! I'm also quite happy with myself that I've read most of those books. Brilliant! I'm always up for a good bit of literature.

As for the inventory, you see, it is not so much the putting things at the end that I think frustrates, it is the not moving them back when finished. Tricky business! Inventories... it makes me wonder how they're structured. Linked lists? Hm...

Curse that unfashionable overseer! Aquariums has warmed on me, though I'm a bit disappointed I'm not getting as many cool aquarium goodies from DC anymore. sad There's some really fantastic stuff in the cash shop, and the DC offerings pale in comparison, both in quantity and quality. I mean, there's only so many frozen fountains I can stick in there! xd

Pan, thank you so much for your updates! Please let us know when we can opt-in to the security features, because I would love to do so. Question: will this also allow us to have a single email attached to multiple accounts?

Looking forward to the Overseer fixes! He opened every day for me until last week, and has been extremely stingy since then. I thought I was doing such a good job with my fish, too! They are nearly up to 40%!

Also, thank you for working on the inventory. I'm not too annoyed by the item shuffling any more, but I have a smaller inventory than a lot of other users. I know a fix for that will be appreciated across the board!

"- The security measures are opt-in. Basically, they default off, and you'll choose to enable them."

OMFG why didn't the announcement SAY this?! It would've saved me a lot of stress and annoyance, haha. My female alt, whom I've been using since 2003, was made using my old college email that stopped working after I graduated, and the announcement put me in a bit of a panic. (I did get her a new address anyway, though.)

Glad to hear the inventory is being worked on. I barely change anything due to the huge hassle of reorganizing my inventory afterward.

Also, Anna Karenina. That's all I've got. rofl

Hello. First of all, I really have to say that I appreciate your telling the community about your work. SO many things that are going on make way more sense that way. Still. I'm having a couple of problems with the website that I think someone needs to habe a look at.

1. In GIM, my friends don't get updated. I'm still having the same amount of friends that I had back when the feature was released, but what's even weirder about it is that the friends showing up themselves are different: For example, on Monday, it shows friends A, B, E, F, and H. On Tuesday, however, it shows friends B, C, D, F and G. (Assuming I got 8 friends, A to H, but it only shows 5 of them at a time.)

2. In the marketplace, some items can't be bought because they are "frozen".
The exact message I get when trying to buy those is frozen_item_cannot_be_moved.

3. When playing ELF, my whole computer freezes when I accidently hit the right mouse button or click during the intro. It's really annoying. I can't even cancel the process in the task manager anymore.

4. The music in the bebo lounge is broken. It's not that important to me, but I think it needs at least mentioning.

I'll add more glitches once I think of them.

i have been having 2 problems or noticed glitches over the past little while. i have asked many people and they have never noticed these before.

1. Everyday i go to log into gaia and everytime i enter my user name and password it will tell me "please enter your password." that one has been going on for like a year now.

2. i noticed is strange guilds popping up under my guilds that i am not a part of. i cannot quit them because i am not a part of the guide.

is there anything that can be done or will i have to just wait these out?

thanks if you can help and thanks for helping all these people

I'd just like to mention, I appreciate you guys finally doing something about the inventory issue. Also, for some reason, I seem to be the only person in this world of Gaia to not be able to use my aquarium. I do see them in profiles and signatures, but when I go to the aquarium page under My Gaia, I get just a blue/purple screen, which I assume is the background, and I get a link to buy aquarium stuff and to lead to the about aquariums page. Do YOU know why this is happening?

Geez, I don't check my subscribed journals for a whole day, and you go and post! xD
I'm glad you fixed your journal, ILU and your ever-so informative entries! heart

Anyway, I'm VERY VERY HAPPY to hear about inventories being worked on soon!!! I love to keep mine organized, and it's been hellish even *thinking* about organizing mine after item norm. crying

I'm also apparently one of the few that's happier about the new security - can we have mouse-only PINs next for our inventories, please? I mean, there will always be stupid idiots who give out their passwords and PINs or whatever, but it would be a really nice protection plan against phishing sites and the like.

I don't really have an opinion on the new inboxes, though I will say that the site is starting to be so white it's causing mild headaches and partial snow blindness, though.

I do have to add something, however - I see Cosmic Disruption did stop over and post in your journal, and I happened to stumble on her thread. I've only gotten one of those "slow down" warnings ONCE in my entire time on Gaia, yet I've gotten four in the past three days on my mule. I truly believe there's a glitch with the system, as not only are some people getting them very frequently, they're also getting them when they aren't doing anything very oddly nor very quickly. Please please please come over and check out this thread!:

No more random bannings because the bot detectors are going on the rampage, PLEASE! gonk

Hey Pan I think I need a new overseerer. Three days in a row now it's refused to cough up.

EDIT: 4 days now...

my overseer hs been decidedly stingy as well as gravehuey's overseer. i know it is probably not the right place to post this, but i figure you look at journal more than you would the MILLIONS of topics and posts on the forum. anyways thanks for listening. and THANK YOU, for working so hard to make all of us whiny people happy lol.

Got some more glitches for ya:

5. I can't edit my previous comment eek When I tried removing that typo (changing that b to a v) it told me that my post had more than 2000 letters and wouldn't let me save it.

6. I can't remove the aquarium from my signature! Every time I un-check the box where it says "display aquarium in signature" and hit save, it won't save the option I un-checked and keeps displaying it in my siggy.

7. I think you might have forgotten about this, but - ever since you changed the navigation, the toolbar is crying out for an update surprised It still has the old navigation, and since I use it a lot, I never get quite used to either of them.

I hope that helped biggrin

PS: A sidenote to that frozen item problem in the marketplace: I had this happen to me when I was trying to buy a Letter of October 2008. surprised

that's very creative with the first lines. biggrin can't pick them but it makes the post read poetically, and it's nice to hear someone is actually actively working to fix the problems with gaia. too often it feels like nothing but new features get done.
