Journals Lost
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of the good fortune of working at Gaia, must be in want of a journal. I saw a profile comment that asked why my journal was private, and I was surprised -- it shouldn't have been private at all. So, I logged into my journal, and... there was nothing there!
It is kind of a sickening feeling, like the kind you get when you close the door and instantly realize that you had left the keys in there.
How did my journal get wiped? Ah, well, two devs had been looking at that really strange journal bug where you see your journal when you go to someone else's profile, and through a series of coincidences and extremely odd fortune, had managed to wipe my journal clean. It was kind of a really special case, and didn't touch any other journals, and was easily recovered given liberal applications of regexes on humongoid backup files.
Security Measures
A screaming came across Site Feedback. The new security measures that were announced were perhaps confusing for a number of reasons; for one, they didn't announce the time frame, so a lot of people thought that they had immediately taken place, and second, they were a little vague.
So here is the clear description of it:
- The security measures won't hit until November.
- The security measures are opt-in. Basically, they default off, and you'll choose to enable them.
- When you change an e-mail, you'll have to verify at both the old e-mail and the new e-mail. This prevents a hacker from changing the e-mail on your account without you knowing about it.
- If you have the security measures on and you log in from a different IP than one you've used before, you'll have to validate by e-mail before being able to log in. Once you've validated from that IP, you'll be able to log in from that IP in the future.
- If you turn the security measures on, you'll have to validate against your e-mail first.
- If you turn the security measures off, you'll have to validate against your e-mail first.
Update 10:00pm: We ignore the low 8 bits of the IP. So, if you're using a router, you won't constantly get asked to reverify.
I think that covers it. Discussions in the office involved a) how to deal with people that lose their original e-mail address, b) whether this should be opt-in or opt-out, and c) what percentage of the users will elect to turn on this security measure if we make it opt-in. I think for now that we're going with opt-in to see how many people start using it.
Inventory
Happy inventories are all alike; every unhappy inventory is unhappy in its own way. This is the most asked question ever, for understandable reasons. You see, objects have the notion of a location -- for example, main inventory, suitcase, equipped, house -- and a slot, which is their position in that particular location, with 0 being the top. Slots must be consecutive.
So, for reasons that are hard to enumerate in the brief span of a journal entry, the item norm team went with a location to indicate equipped status. So, if you had in your main inventory:
HAT = slot 0
COAT = slot 1
PANTS = slot 2
and then decided to put on the coat, your main inventory is:
HAT = slot 0
PANTS = slot 1
and your equipped inventory is
COAT = slot 0
So, based on this, you can see why your items have to move to the beginning or the end: they're in an entirely different location, and thus sort differently. That said, users absolutely hate hate HATE it, and we think we have a potential fix for this. Fieryange1 is going to spend next week trying to work this fix in and also improve the performance problems with the existing inventory, so I'll talk about this next week after she's had some time to look at it.
Halloween Event
Through the cube walls, between the curling posters, I can see Fleep n' company working on the Halloween event. Yes, there is a Halloween event, despite one rumor to the contrary. It should absolutely and totally rock. I'm looking forward to it, it sounds really cool -- those guys always try to go the extra mile.
Aquarium Overseer
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral of the Gaia lies a small unregarded gray overseer. This overseer is stingy, and does not open all the time!
We have a bunch of fixes to aquarium that should nail the overseer stinginess problems, the items moving randomly around the tank problem, and the frozen items suddenly being unfrozen problem. You see, in item norm we have the notion of item properties; individual attributes that you can put on an instance of item. We needed this for battle (since, for example, your Mantis ring has a different charge level than everyone else's Mantis ring), but it turned out to be useful for everything from Paypal fraud reduction to Aquariums. Anyway, there was a problem with some percentage of the property writes that were going on; with the fixes rolling out this should be taken care of. These should roll out Tuesday at this rate.
New Inbox
Somewhere in old Gaia, in a place whose name I do not care to remember, an inbox lived not long ago; one of those with bright colorful pastels and big buttons. So, the inboxes changed quite a bit, and opinion on the new inboxes are running 50/50, but it is safe to say that the devs on this are paying close attention to the feedback. If you've like to provide feedback please go to Text Message feedback and leave a message.
Maintenance Tonight
It was a bright cold night in October, and the clocks were striking midnight. We're doing maintenance at midnight tonight; we don't expect any problems but if the site goes a little wonky, don't worry -- we're working on it. We'll make an announcement about it in a bit.
Also: we are going to start doing weekly development announcements, but are still figuring out what goes into it. More info on this in a bit.
Bugs Fixed
I write this sitting near a kitchen sink of bug fixes. Bugs fixed recently:
- tons of find friends enhancements
- fixed IE6 problems in marketplace
- Easter Egg: Gaia logo now glows when you hover over it (to indicate
that you can click on it, which users were missing)
- various arena fixes
- arena winners have been granted their gold
- updated Mischief Makers page
- changed To Do section in My Gaia
- more tweaks to the avatar dropdown
- two battle patches, in preparation for battle release
- improved performance of guild bot
- enforced stricter passwords on password changes
- umm, some others, which I'll post when I remember them.
Finally...
The first line of each subsection resembles a line from a famous book. Anybody think that they know them all?

(¸.·`¤~First off, I like the new security measures. I was so surprised at the fact that it wasn't going over so well.
Funny, people ask for better security, then complain when it comes.
-sighs- Well that's people for you, we're just never satisfied. rolleyes
Can't wait to see the inventories revamped again in the near future. xp
Whoever thought Halloween was canceled should be bopped in the head.
The only problem I've had with Aquariums is that I was never told my goldfish died. They just up and disappeared and I never got a drop for them. emo
Haven't tried the text messaging, but I love[/ii] the new layout. Props to the people who did it! Just please try and get that guild where you can't delete/open a message because it wasn't flagged yet fixed.
I noticed the glow too. Nice touch, I must say. wink ¤´¨)
