Right so, don't know if you know or not, but on my profile I have stated that I like to find out the gory history behind kid's nursery rhymes. Right so I would like to tell you a little about the history behind the rhyme Mary, Mary.
Mary Mary quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.
Mary is actually, Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary), King Henry VIIII daughter. Mary was a strict catholic and made it he job to eradicate (remove) the protestant faith from England. The garden isn't a garden but a graveyard that continued to grow with all the people Mary killed. Killed them because they wouldn't change their faiths. The Silver Bells and Cockle Shells, are actually torture devices; the silver bells are thumbscrews and the cockle shells are devices attached to the genitals... and well I don't need to explain. Mary would torture them into changing faith, and if they didn't she beheaded them. This brings us to the last line, the 'maids' are the original guillotine, maid is short for maiden. The Maiden weren't as sharp as what we're used to and could take up to 11 hacks to cut the head off! And most of the time the persecuted would resist, causing the executor to chase them around the scaffold.
Well their you go. A handy bit of info for you to take home! biggrin
