I laid my head down on the desk. Class was extremely boring. Mr. Forrester was lecturing us on anatomy. Why did I sign up for science first thing in the morning? Alek, sitting behind me, poked me in the back.
“Nami, what are you doing after school?” he asked.
“Alek, it’s too early. And my parents are supposed to be telling me something important,” I replied, “So whatever you want me to do, it’ll have to wait.” He nodded and sat back down before Mr. Forrester caught him. I saw some girls giving me nasty stares. Like I said, all the girls at school said Alek was gorgeous enough to die for. I don’t agree. I shot them icy glares back.
After the bell, Hallie Stone, the class b***h, stopped me at my desk.
“What is your business with Alek Peterson?” she asked. I rolled my eyes. This was the sixth time in the three weeks of school that I’ve been stopped for knowing Alek.
“We’re neighbors. And friends. Is that a problem, Hallie?” She crinkled her nose at me, like I smelled bad. As if.
“Yes. Yes it is. We don’t like you, Nami. You already have the entire male school population mooning after you. You don’t need to be vain about it and try to snag Alek, too.” I glared at Hallie. Me? Vain? Ha.
“Just so you know, Hallie, I’m not trying to get Alek. I’m not even remotely interested in him. Or any other of the boys at this school, for that matter.” Hallie made a face.
“So what? Are you saying that none of these boys can meet up to your slutty expectations?” she asked.
“No. I’m saying that I find the entire male species extremely unappealing. And as if you can even mention sluttiness. I see the way you flirt with at least ten different guys a day.” I pushed past her and went to my art class.
I was late. Thank you Hallie. Rayne pursed her lips at me as I strolled into class two minutes after the bell rang.
“Where were you?” Alek asked. I pulled on an apron and sat next to him.
“Two words: Hallie Stone,” I replied. Alek nodded. He understood. We began to work on our project that was due next week. Rayne was handing out projects like they were going out of style. And I wish they were.
Alek and I walked home together. I didn’t say much; I was in a foul mood. Another three girls had nerve to stop me and accuse me of being an arrogant slut. I was ready to punch the next girl in the face who dared say it again. In her pretty little face. Alek tried to cheer me up. It didn’t work.
“C’mon, Nami. Say something. Anything at all. Say you like my hair. Say you hate it. Just say anything,” he prompted. He was starting to annoy me.
“If you don’t shut up, I’m going to smear your face against a brick wall,” I icily snapped, rubbing my temples. But I did like his hair. Alek had dyed it black, and there were blue tips on the end. Too bad his brown eyes didn’t match. He also had a lip ring. But he had that from the first day of school.
“Nami, that wasn’t nice,” Alek pouted.
“I’m not feeling very nice right now. And I have to go. I have to pick Yasuo up from his daycare,” I said. Alek nodded, and I crossed the street. I walked to the daycare center that Yasuo went to after he got out of preschool in the morning. Afterwards, he and I went home.
“Mother! We’re home!” I called out, opening the door. Yasuo and I went inside.
“Nami, I’m right here,” Mother said, sitting up from the couch she lounged on.
“Where’s Dad?” I asked. She gestured toward the back. He was probably in their room.
“Where’s your sister?”
“With her friends. She’ll come back.” Mother looked at me with seriousness in her eyes. She then stood to go get my dad. When they came back, they sat Yasuo and I on the couch. Dad sat on the coffee table and Mother pulled up a chair. Dad ran his fingers through his hair. Yasuo and I looked nothing like the rest of our family. Everyone else had dark, dark brown hair and blue eyes.
“Do you want to start, Irene?” he asked, looking to Mother. She nodded.
“Nami, we have something important to tell you,” she started.
“Well, I can see that. So what is it?” I said. Mother looked at Dad, worried.
“Irene, she’s ready,” he said. Mother started to breathe deeply. What was so important that they had difficulty telling me? Were they getting a divorce? Was I being sent away to boarding school? Have I been set up in an arranged marriage? I looked back and forth between my parents.
“Nami, you’re the reincarnation of a princess,” Dad said. My mouth dropped open. And I began to laugh.
“Good one! Now really, what’s the actual news?” I gasped. Dad looked concerned at Mother.
“Nami, really. You are the reincarnation of a Japanese ice princess. And Yasuo is the reincarnation of her brother. So, technically, you’re royalty,” she said. I stopped giggling.
“Am I…am I really?” I whispered. My parents nodded. “And Yasuo is a prince?” Again, they nodded.
“Nami, I know this is a lot to handle. But—”
“How…how long have you known?” I asked. Dad sighed.
“Since you were a baby. Nami…now that we’ve told you, the rest of the world knows,” he stated.
“Why? Why does the world have to know?”
“That’s the way we were told it was to work. The day this was revealed to you, it would also be revealed to the rest of the world.” I started to rock back and forth. This was too much for me. I mean, I’m only sixteen. And Yasuo…he’s only four. He doesn’t need to know that he’s a prince. He looked up at me, confused.
“Nami, what’s going on?” he asked.
“Yasuo, you’re a prince,” I said.
“Like in my book?” I nodded.
“Yes. Just like in your book. Exactly like in your book.” I stood up and walked back to the door.
“Nami, where are you going?” Dad asked.
“Out. I need air. Don’t expect me back for a while.” I slipped through the door and down the stairs, where I ran into Alek. He looked at me with concern in his eyes, gripping my shoulders.
“Nami, are you okay?” he asked. I tried to pull away from him, but he wouldn’t let go. Instead, Alek pulled me into an embrace.
“What are you doing?” I mumbled into his shirt.
“That’s a lot to handle. Isn’t it?”
“So you know.” Alek nodded. I struggled in his arms, trying to free myself. Alek hugged me tighter.
“Please let me go,” I said. He did, and I tried to push past him. I was confused. What was wrong with me? I never let a guy hug me. Yasuo is the only exception. And yet, I let Alek hold onto me like he’d never see me again…odd. I finally did get around Alek, and I left the apartment complex. Alek followed me.
“I’m not a child, Alek,” I said to him. He grinned at me.
“I know. But we’re friends, right?” he said. I sighed, and let him catch up to me. Little did I know how much I would appreciate Alek’s company as I walked through the neighborhood.

I don't actually know. Stuff. I'm pretty random, and sometimes moody, so you never know what you're gonna get. Lots of my writing, that's for sure.
