I've been on this site... For a while.
This site has changed enormously. I'll give doubt where it's due-i've matured since i started Alice and things that may have seemed mature enough at the time i may have grown out of. However, the demographic has changed, the people Gaia draws have chaged and the way the site is managed has certainly changed enormously.
Place me in the group of older Gaia players who are jaded, but whether or not maintaining the server costs more then the donations put on, can't they choose classier companies to support the site? Miss Bimbo? Really? There are others. I adblock them. So why does it irritate me? Gaia is selling itself. This used to be a site where you could find all variety of people. But the way the site management is has driven people to other sites, while drawing in a less admirable crowd.
In addition to this-Cash shops? Evolving items you have to pay money for? This site is advertised as free. It's a catch-22. If you want the nice items you either have to spend inordinate amounts of time online or spend real money on pixels. 'It's so cheap! It's supporting the site!' Yes, it is supporting the site. But there should be other ways to do that than paying for what makes this site so appealing while advertising as a free site. You can chat on many places on the web AND play games. It's not the games that make Gaia special, it's not the forums, it's not Towns. It's the avatars.
there's nothing i can do to change these things but let my disagreement be known and sign petitions. I'll still play Gaia. I can bypass these things. I'm a big girl. But i miss the old Gaia, i'm disgusted by how much it has sold out. I hate to digress into stereotyping, but i'm not a spoiled pre/early teen. I can't pay for the good items, and i can't spend forty hours a week on Gaia to buy them on the Marketplace. I have hobbies, friends and school. I'm sure many others feel the same.
I love you, Gaia, but you disappoint me.
heart Alice
